Advice on Gadget to Convert VHS to DVD

Magnivox carries a VHS-to-DVD recorder. Not only does it transfer VHS to the DVD, but also acts as a DVD player and a VCR. They are around $150, I think I got mine at Wal-Mart a few years ago. When recording on the DVD it also allows you to make chapters and such. However, it does not allow you to edit(creating any visual effects like titles, etc, like you can in Windows Movie Maker)- it is just a stop and start where you want recorded. However, if you are solely wanting to transfer VHS to DVD... SUPER EASY. Plus you can record television programs to DVD as well. It uses DVD-RWs so you can reuse them.

I just bought the "Dazzle DVD Recorder" 2 weeks ago so I could convert our VHS kids' sports footage to computer/DVD for grandparents. I think it's great! (FYI - I'm comfortable with the computer, but by no means an expert.) I had no trouble at all installing it. I WAS confounded by the software it came with -- but discovered that all I really needed to use was Windows Movie Maker anyway, which I already had as part of Windows XP. Even better, I found it on sale at Best Buy (in-store) for $36.99. I'm pleased & would definitely recommend it.

I don't know about any gadgets for do it yourself. However, I was at Costco this week and picked up a flyer where they are advertising this process for slides, VHS, 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm movie reels.

The cost for the tapes was $19.99. That is up to 2 tapes for 2 hrs.

We were looking for a place to convert the VHS tapes and tapes from our old video camera to DVD.

Hello,M., 2 years ago I was into sorting and storing many years of pictures.(still not finished lol) Then I went into a rent to own place off Gallaway @ Kerney , and asked the manager if he had such a device. He showed me one and it was expensive to buy through his method. He asked me why I didn't just rent one for a couple weeks to see if it worked for my purpose. Much better than having to return an item that isn't what you thought it was.
You could call or see if they have one, they also show you HOW to use it.

Well here is what husband had to say:

"Converting your old VHS tapes, if they are home movies, should work well enough with one of the devices on Amazon (like the Toshiba DVR610). That said, any purchased video from about 1986 on, released from a major studio (Disney's Little Mermaid for example), has Macrovision or some other copy protection. It is doubtful that you will be able to transfer these videos to DVD with an inexpensive setup.

To properly do a transfer of all your video you will need some expensive editing equipment like a time based corrector and a professional SVHS deck. It is probably not financially reasonable for what you are trying to accomplish unless you know of someone with the equipment that will do the transfer service.

I'd recommend going with a converter if you are mainly trying to convert home videos. If you have other commercial releases that you wish to transfer, you are better off buying a used copy of the DVD or renting a copy from a service like Netflix.
