Advice on Excema
My daugher has recently developed excema. I have not taken her to the peds as I know that it is excema but how to treat it? My doctor is not someone that hands out medicine or creams so thought and see if there were any alternative methods. I have not changed my detergent lately either.

Hi,
Adults can use hydrocortisone cream on their excema but I am not certain if it is safe to use on young children. I would take her to the doctor because the sooner you treat it, the less itchy for her and the sooner it will clear up. If you want to try something over the counter I would try something with Oatmeal like Aveno or Eucerin calming itch relief. Those are both found at drug stores. Good luck!

Hi M.-
My son had excema as well. The only product I found that not only calmed but practically rid the excema was the Arbonne product line for babies. Cheapest place to buy is on Ebay, I used the body/hair wash and the lotion. I made sure to lather him with lotion morning and night. Good luck! My sons excema eventually went away. My nephew is 3 and he still has a terrible case of it.
Oh, on the dry severe patches I uses 1% cortizone cream you can buy at the grocery store.

First, I would recommend you ask the doctor - they'll tell you how to treat it, even if it is not with a medicine. Having said that, however, both my daughters have very bad skin - and since their cousin has eczema, I assumed they had it. Their doctor said, "It wouldn't surprise me if they had it. But for now, let's just say they have very dry skin." The recommendations were the same as for eczema, I think. Do NOT bathe in hot water - keep it only warm. Wash only with Dove soap (or Acetephil, which is very expensive). Use only Eucirin ORIGINAL lotion - nothing but ORIGINAL (or the CVS brand equivalent). At first it is REALLY greasy, but once you get used to it, you can see how all other lotions actually dry you out - they all have alcohol in them. But truly, I'd also go to the doctor to get recommendations.

Hi M.,
From my experience, Eczema is an outward manifestation of something going on inside - ie. allergies. If it's not a reaction to soaps, detergents, etc. then I would seriously consider what she's eating. Wheat and dairy are very often the culprits. I get eczema on my face when I have too much dairy. You might find creams at Whole Foods in Andover that will help with the itching, etc. but that doesn't explain what's causing the eczema. I would watch her diet and see if it clears up. My family drinks rice milk fortified with calcium since my husband and I both have dairy issues. I've had great success at Natural Marketplace in Salem, NH on Route 28 with health issues for my whole family. The natural doctor works there on Tuesdays and the other days his mother and sister work there. I hope this information helps you out.

I have eczema and also my son does too. The best lotion I have found that works is Eucerine but only the one in the tub. It is very thick. the ones in the pump bottle seem to be watered down and don't work at all. Also I think you need to figure out what is setting off your daughters reaction. try dreft for your laundry detergent. It is very mild and made for babies. Maybe it is her soap or shampoo. It might even be a food.
If you want to be using natural remedies the oatmeal bath works for temporary relief. I have found that banana peels work very well as a moisterizer. just rub the inside of the peel on the rash. If the rashes get worse and spreads instead of get better then call the doctor. They will be able to give you something stronger to get rid of the rash.
