Advice on Adnoidectomy/tonsillectomy

My daughter is 7 and gets sick frequently and recovery can be long. She was diagnosed with asthma last spring, and those meds have helped, but it isn't kicking it. We've sought natuopathic remedies for years and nothing has licked it. We saw an ENT who suggested having her adnoids out. We can decide if we want the tonsils taken as well. Did anyone's child have adnoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy and see positive results with less sickness? My daughter's white cell counts get low sometimes, which I've been told is viral suppression from the chronic colds. The idea is that with the adnoids out (which are yucky now) the counts will be more stable because she won't constantly be fighting the junk in her adnoids. Anyone have this happen before? If so, did the surgery help? Would you do the tonsils too?

What can I do next?

I had my tonsils and adnoids removed when I was 6 because of repeated ear problems. That was about a hundred years ago, but I haven't had an earache since. Glad my parents made the decision to have them taken out.

We had my three year old sons adnoids taken out this year - he is healthier because of it. For him there were a lot of sleep issues and a cronic cough. Because of his age they did not take out his tonsils because they were not enlarged enough (though I would have liked them too). He came out of aniesthisa great, just needed lots of snuggles and reovered quickly - In my opinion these surgeries are so much easier when they are younger, the little ones bounce back faster.

Have it done! Mine were removed many, many years ago for similar reasons as your daughter! However, they had to put me in the hospital for a week to get the infection down enough that they could remove T&A! So, getting it done should help w/all her sicknesses!

My son was always sick and had chronic fluid in his ears.... Seemed like he always had a green runny nose and we just couldn't clear it up. Turned out he was over 50% blocked with yucky enlarged and infected adenoids. We opted for tubes in his ears and also removed his adenoids. What an amazing difference. Green nose instantly cleared up and he could actually breath through his nose. He was a much healthier child and I am so pleased that we had the surgery. He was 17 months old at the time and is now 4. We had great success with just tubes/adenoidectomy. It is my understanding that taking out tonsils is a harder surgery for kids and a lot less common than it used to be. I can certainly say the adenoidectomy was worth the discomfort. Good luck with your decision - hopefully your ENT can weigh in on the tonsils.

My daughter had both hers out at 3. The adenoids were leading to trouble breathing at night and especially when she had a cold. Her tonsils were chronically enlarged - almost touching. So we removed both. She is better. Long term I felt removing tonsils in adolesence would be PAINFUL and more dangerous. It was a rough week of recovery (tonsils), but not horrible, and I'm glad I did it.

My son was 4 when he has is T&A removed. He wasn't really sick much, but he was only 4. They were so big that they caused him to snore, and even delayed his speech. We saw huge improvments right away and recovery was a breeze for him.

Hi--
All the symptoms you described--asthma, chronic colds, etc, are symptoms of food/environmental allergies. Have you ever had her tested? I'm shocked the naturopath didn't suggest this. Both my kids have bad allergies and we've treated them naturally from the beginning. I've helped dozens of people with this type of thing. My guess would be food allergies, probably dairy or gluten, or possible an overgrowth of yeast. I would look into the above before doing surgery. I'm happy to provide more guidance if you feel I might be onto something here.
Good luck!
J.

If your doctor thinks it will help in your child's situation, I would have it done. We had three kids, and all three had some degree of issue with the ears and throats, all saw ENT's and one child only had tubes, one child had multiple tubes, her adnioids, and then her tonsils out, and the third had neither, so our experence is that they do not just do surgery for no reason. If we had it to do over, we would have had the tonisils out at the same time as the adnoids and avoided a second surgery. This took care of all of her problems, once we took out the tonisils. We did not have a strep thoat, terrible cold, or ear infection after that. For her, the surgery was easy, She had it done at age 5 and was up eating a PB&J by noon the same day. Yours might not go quite that well, but it does happen.

Good luck,
M.

After having my adenoids and tonsils out as a kid, my health improved greatly. I know my mom has encouraged me to do it with my son who is sick often. His is allergy related, and now that we've got the allergies taken care of, he hasn't had an ear infection is several years. Before that, antibiotics were basically part of his diet during the winter. I'd check with an allergist before doing something as serious as surgery. GL!

Our son had his out around 4 years old. He kept having mysterious fevers. The last time we took him in for a mysterious fever our ped nurse practioner said his tonsils were touching and after questioning us a bit told us he had sleep epnea and needed to have his tonsils removed. The procedure itself is quick. We stayed at the surgery center for a few hours and took him home. We were told that really young kids can have a hard time coming out of anesethia but I don't remember it being bad for us. Recovery was short. Pain meds and quiet days for a few days and then it was difficult to keep him down. We had to keep him home from daycare for a week so and after that they had to do their best to keep him quiet for another week or so. This was to make sure the scab did not come off too soon and start the site bleeding. Not easy when they are feeling so much better. Keep up with the pain meds for the first few days and again after about 7 days when the scab falls off. I would not hesitate to do it again for him. He has not had a fever of unknown origin since.
