Adopt a Family Christmas Program

Does anyone know of a church or charity that sponsors an adopt a family Christmas program on the North side of Chicago? I did this last year when I lived in Denver and it was so rewarding I would like to start it as a tradition for our family. We 'adopted' a family for Christmas and bought them food and gifts within the specified guidelines of the program. If anyone knows of a similar program, please let me know.
Thanks!

I did this though Volunteers of America a few years ago when I lived in the state of Oregon. Their site might have info.

CEDA Northwest - ###-###-####
I adopt a family through a social services agency in Arlington Heights called CEDA. They'll send you the info. about the family, but you'd need to drop off the gifts in Arl. Heights. If you were to do it you can contact me via a reply here and I can bring the gifts for you when I bring mine. My sister is a social worker and she used to work there. I have done this program for 4 years now and find it rewarding, plus, since my sister worked there I know that the actual families are receiving everything they should and that this organization really tries to assist as many families as they can.

Hi C.,

You could check with St. Cyprian's Food Pantry (Irving Park Rd. and Nagle). The Food Pantry serves Chicago's zip codes 60707, 60630, 60634 West of Central, 60639, 60656, Plus the suburbs of River Grove, Harwood Heights, Norridge and Elmwood Park. Residents of these areas needing emergency food are eligible to receive food from the pantry once a month.

You could see if the director/coordinator of St. Cyprian's had a family that comes to them that would really benefit from being "adopted" this Christmas. You can check out their website for contact info: http://www.unitedinfaith.org/stcyprians.html

I hope it works out. Maybe you'd be helping them start their own program-- and that would be amazing!

Kind regards,

R.

Every year we adopt a family through the Cathedral Shelter in Chicago.

The contact person's name is Marilyn Knilans. Here's their contact info:
Cathedral Shelter of Chicago
1668 W. Ogden Ave
Chicago, IL 60612
###-###-#### x 223
____@____.com

I'm sure they'd be *very* appreciative of anyone who can help! I should note that if you want to do this this year you should call her ASAP because families usually pick up their baskets the first weekend in December.

You were looking for something on the North side. Skokie has a program but that might be a little to far north for you. Here is a blurb about it.

2006 Assist-A-Family Program Underway
People, by mer8300, on 11/08/06 at 04:57 PM
The Village of Skokie Assist-A-Family program matches businesses, individuals and groups with a needy Skokie family. Donors give gift certificates, household goods, clothing or toys (new items), and all recipient families are pre-screened by the Village's Human Services Division. Last year, more than 100 families were helped through the Assist-A-Family Program. Some donors opt to give cash, which Human Services Division staff uses to buy additional goods and toys for recipient families. If you would like to donate to this program please contact the Human Services Division at 847/933-8208.
