Adderal Xr
my son was put on adderal xr about a year ago and i was wondering if anyone knows if a child usually stays on this med very long...anyone had the same situation and can tell me if their child had to stay on it very long?? i have talked to the ped, but of course its not a set in stone kind of thing and he can really only say time will tell. my son is 7 and seems to do rather well on this med...but i am just a curious person especially about this...any help would be appreciated.

My son is 10 yrs old and has been on Concerta for about 3 yrs now. Before he was on Clonidine(sp).. With th Concerta it is a time release med. and by the time he wakes up the next morn it is all out of his system. He does really well taking this and is an A B student and very artistic...But, he would be these things without the meds it just helps him concentrate better in class and when doing his work. We have taken him off for the summer and really see no difference as of yet. But, he is not in a classroom studying we will see how he does at the start of school and see if he needs to be on it at all. He doctor says that they will grow out of the hyperactivity and won't need to be on meds his entire adult life but some still do....

my son was on the same meds for about a year. then he started to have mood swings. so his ped put him on concreta. i like this one better becouse it still allows him to be a kid. he is very happy and doesn't seem to get upset as easy. with the adderal, they kept changing the amount he was on. after a while, it wouldn't have the same affect. but i do beleive that only time will tell if your child or mine will have to take it for a long time or not. trust me, i wiould love noting more then to get up in the morning and head out the door with out saying, did i give him his meds today? there have been days where i really couldn't remmember if i had or not and had to send him to school with out it. i don't want to do that again. but keep your head up. he will bee just fine.

My son is 7 as well and he is also on adderal xr. He is doing pretty well on it too, but sometimes I have to try make sure he keeps eating. A guy at my job says his son was on it but, after about 3 years, they took him off because it was no longer helping the way it used to. He said their ped suggested adjusting the dosage at first but they still ended having to get something else. I would like to hear anything you try as well.

MY SON WAS ON ADDERAL XR FOR ABOUT A YEAR HE STARTED OFF AT THE LOWEST DOSE AND DID FINE, BUT THE HIGHER THE DOSE GOT THE MORE MOODY HE GOT, AND BY THE TIME HE WAS ST 30MG HE WAS SO MAD ALL THE TIME. HE WOULD GO FROM BEING THE HAPPIEST TO THE MEANEST PERSON REAL QUICK. WE TOOK HIM OFF OF IT AND HE'S NOW ON RITILAN XR AND HE IS ON THE MAX DOSE BUT SO FAR HE EATS REALLY GOOD AND HAS STRAIGHT A'S IN SCHOOL. HE PLAYS SPORTS AND IS VERY ACTIVE BUT HIS ABLE TO CONCENTRAIT ON SCHOOL WORK. MY BROTHER WAS ON RIRILAN FOR MOST OF HIS LIFE, HE'S NOW 24 AND OFF HIS MEDS. HE NEVER WENT THREW WITHDRAWS. AND MY SON NEVER WENT THREW IT WITH THE ADDERAL. JUST WATCH HIS MOODS. THE PED USALLY WON'T CHANGE THE MED UNTIL GRADES GO DOWN OR MOOD SWINGS CHANGE. GOOD LUCK.

My son started out on Strattera and we moved on to adderal xr. He started on the meds at the end of 3rd grade and is now in 8th grade. He has been on the adderal for about 2 years and is doing AMAZING! He can tell during the day if he forgot to take it and so can his teachers. The docs have moved his dosage every few months but he is doing well and is still the same sweet kid he was when he started it- just calmer and is way more focued on everything.
I hope this helps some!

Hi! My 13-year-old has been on Adderall XR since she was 9. She was on regular Adderall from age 4 to age 9, so she's been medicated for 9 years. The XR works very well for her. She's on a 20mg. dosage once daily. Just make sure if you see any changes in behavior, eating habits, or sleeping habits to let your doctor know. The medication works well, but as you know, effects different people in a different way. Good luck with your son. Just give the medication plenty of time to work, and don't expect miracles overnight! God Bless!

Hi...my son has been on adderall since he was 5. We have tried other medications and they didn't work. He is 9 and is on xr 30mg. I have adhd as well and take adderall. the only problem we have ever had with this medication is my son started to blink funny. We took him off the meds for about a montha nd then restarted them. It never returned and he has been back on the meds for about 2 years now. I think adderall is wonderful. He isn't moody and he eats well. Maybe he is the exception to the rule. I know when I take it, I DO go through withdrawls and get very moody. I do think you can get addicted. The feeling is a rush for the first 2 hours and then you feel calm and focused. I;'m hoping as he gets older he will be able to handle his adhd and not need meds but as for now, they are working, he is very invovled in sports and is an A, B student.

My husband manages a GNC, and there is a product that they carry that might be a good alternative for your son. It is called Attentive Child. They receive good feedback on it from their customers. Any GNC should carry it, and if you would like more information on the product, I can ask my husband about it.
