Hello, my daughter was diagnosed with silent acid reflux when she was a newborn and put on medication. She is now 3 1/2 months and I was wondering how you can tell if your baby doesn't need medication anymore? I would rather her not be on meds if I can help it. She was never really too fussy before but she would always have the hiccups, arch her back while eating or just snack while eating and then burn and cry. Any advice on how I can tell if she is ready to be off her medication would be helpful. Thank you!
You should keep her on meds for at least 6 weeks. Then try without meds and if the signs continue start the meds again. My son started with meds when he was about 2 months, I have stopped giving them to him but his signs continued and got worse. Now he is almost a year and had been off meds for about 2 weeks and so far so good. Typically it goes away after the first year.
I agree with most of the responses. My daughter was diagnose with silent acid reflux also around 3 mo. and stop the medicine until she was a 1 yr old because I noticed she didn't out grow that condition until she was a year old. So, don't get desperate to finish the medicine because if the your child needs it she needs it. It's better to be safe than sorry! :-) Blessings!

My name is D. and my son was diagnosed with Acid Reflux at 3 weeks of age. One day he had an episode while vomitting, while throwing up from his nose and mouth. He immediately started turning dark red as if he could not breathe! This was very scary for me and my family. Low and behold several test were ran and it came back to be Acid Reflux. He is almost 4 months and has been on Prevacid and has had no more problems until recently. We took him off for 2 weeks and just yesterday the episodes started again. I was told by his doctor to keep him on the meds for at least a year. So I am sticking to what I was instructed to do. I hope this helps. Best Wishes.
My son was diagnosed with reflux as well and was put on zantac. He wasn't a big spitter, but had the hiccups, arched back, etc. The ER is the one who prescribed the meds and when we went back to the pediatrician at 2 months she said that the amount he was getting wasn't as much as he should have. She suggested that we try him without it and see how he did. We did that and did end up putting him back on for another month or so. He started getting fussy again after bottles and some hiccups. After another month we took him off and he has done great! We do still keep him upright after his bottle for about 30 minutes and still try to burp halfway through. I have heard that reflux can get worse again, though, after they start sitting up by themselves. Hope this helps!
my daughter was on prevacid for 9 months, until then she spit up all the time and was uncomfortable. when she started to eat solid foods i had to add baby cereal to her bottle to thicken the milk so it was harder to spit up. slowly the spitting up slowed down and i finally got to take off the double bibs she always had on when she was 9 months old.
keep your chin up, it will stop but every child is different, make sure to chat with your doc.
Well, my sister was able to use a pink salt from Chalmers Wellness (it is $13 for a large container)....she put a pinch in each bottle or she took 3/4 t orally herself and it would go through the breast milk, but the reflux cleared within two days. My sister took the salt herself for about 8 months to ensure the reflux was gone....now all is good. She never had to medicate her daughter.....wish I had known this when my baby was little......
