Acid Reflux - Austin, TX

My 16 month old is not responding well to prilosec. Any suggestions on what to try next? He was on prilosec from 4 months-14 months. Off from 14-16 months and the acid reflux came back. Now that he is back on prilosec it is not working as well (at least taking the edge off). Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I have a friend who has had acid reflux for years and has tried all kinds of drugs for it. He said they all worked but only for awhile - then they stopped working. Now he religiously eats an apple and 1 tablespoon of honey every evening before bed. He swears by it, saying its the only thing that has kept on working. No meds. He's an adult - so I don't know about a 16 month old, but I would try it!

HI M.,
If you are willing to try alternative stuff you should seek out Craniosacral Therapy. Google "Intergrative Pediatric Therapy" and you can read about them and their practice. It is a WONDERFUL help to kids with acid reflux WITHOUT medicine. If you have questions you can email me.

Both of my kids have had severe GERD from 3 wks on. DD still takes 30mg prevacid 15 mg 2x/day, a very aggressive dose. But she was vomiting 20+ times a day! We tried elimination, the dr convinced me to quit breast feeding due to milk which I refused to do with dc #1. It ddn't help, which made me so mad! So, I dunno. The same solutions that worked with ds i.e. reglan didn't help with dd. I personally take protonix and it works wonders where zantac did nothing. HTH!

My 24-month old is on Zantac...and has been since she was about 1 month old. It works great. We weaned her off at one year...but around 14 months she started spitting up again and refluxing a lot. (I have talked to a couple of other moms with the same time line...so maybe it is a developmental thing?) We put her back on Zantac...and she is dong fine again. She still refluxes some...but she doesn't complain about it like she used to. Also, we have the pharmacy flavor it with grape so that it doesn't taste as bad. Now...when we forget to give her the dose...she tells us "PURPLE!"...meaning her Zantac! *l* Good luck! I hope you find something that works!

My pediatrician gave my baby Axid and it has worked wonders! My baby went from projectile vomiting 3-5 times after each feeding to spitting up about 3 times a day...if that. Ask your pediatrician about it.

I know you have received lots of reponses and I am not sure how you feel about this, but have you tried a Chiropractor? My daughter had acid reflux as a baby and was on Zantac when she was 8 weeks old. It worked for a little while then it came back. I believe once her body got use to the mediccation it just did not work as well. We had some friends at church who were Chiropractors and they suggested we bring her in. I cannot even begin to tell you how well it worked. It was amazing if you look up reflux on-line you will find tons of information and families who have used this method to cure reflux. It is usually covered by most insurance and it well worth a shot.

M., My children didn't respond to prilosec at all. Once they were over a year I took them off the formula (Enfamil A/R) and tried milk. I found that they could and still can only drink 2% milk or less milk fat - the extra milk fat made them spit up a lot. Also, juice or too many milk products on an empty stomach makes it worse. I still have to watch these things for both kids - one is 3.5 yrs and the other 1.5 yrs. Hope that helps.

have you tried to chage his milk, my nephew had the same problem and my sister in law changed him to soy based milk. I also remembered them giving him some pepto-bismol for some time, i think you should discuss this with your dr.

We used the Prevacid solutabs for my daughter for the longest time and they worked great. It took a little while for us to figure out what dose, and the right time of day to give them to her but once we figured it out it worked wonders.

Hi M.,
I have a son that was diagnosed with Infant reflux when he was an infant. They first gave him prilosec also, and it didn't help.
We then tried Zantac and he's been on it ever since. It helped SO much! I gave him a dose in the morning and then again at night. He is now a year old and I am trying again to wean him off to see if maybe he's better since getting older.
The Zantac has a very strong mint flavor in the liquid and can be alittle tricky to give at first but now my son loves the favor. I started giving it inside his nipple without the bottle and he just sucked it down.
I heard that these little ones can have reflux problems off and on during their life. Poor little guy!
I also have used Malanta Supreme cherry favor before when things got really bad and I needed something more in between using the Zantac.
Hope this helps some,
C.

IN my experience with reflux (my oldest was unsuccessfully medicated from 2 months until I took her off the meds at 10 months), you need to figure out what the trigger foods are that cause your child discomfort. For us that was cows milk - we switched to soy milk, tomato based products - we just put olive oil and herbs on noodles, juice - stopped offering any. Unless your child is extremely severe which I am guessing is not the case since you stopped meds you can control his pain by eliminating his trigger foods. Your doc should have given you a list of common reflux causing foods - or you can find one on the internet. Good luck and start eliminating!

BTW - our awesome pediatrician told us that the meds are probably more harmful long term than not offering your son juice and cows milk. My dd still has boughts with reflux at 4.5 yrs old if I give her too many foods that cause her reflux to start up again.

An article for you.
Chiropractic Manipulations

While it is not confirmed that chiropractic helps with acid reflux, some patients claim that chiropractic manipulations do in fact, help greatly with acid reflux symptoms. As an alternative therapy for your acid reflux, It might be worth a try to see if it helps you.

My girls now 4 & 2 kept having ear infections to the point the doctor almost recommended tubes in their ears. I did some research online and came across some articles about chiropractic care. I took them to the chiropractor a couple times and now they do not get ear infections. There are pediatric chiropractors out there. They know just the right amount of pressure to use. I hope this helps. Take care.

Probiotics is a natural way to help with acid reflux. Google acid reflux and probiotics. I just open a capsule and mix it into my sons cereal each morning. It is good for him in many other ways as well.

Hi M.. Hope everything is well. I have a suggestion. Have you ever heard of Tahitian Noni Juice? Well, I have a friend that had Acid Reflux and suffered with it growing up he heard about Tahitian Noni Juice and decided to give it a try. Well, after a couple of weeks he notice it had helped him. M. is safe for anyone and even babies to consume the juice. It has no side effects. What do you got to lose? If for any reason you are not satisfied you can get your money back. It may be a way for your baby to feel better from the acid reflux. If you would like to get more information on the juice you can get a hold me through my email.

Have a good day and I hope you can find something for you baby to feel better.

my son was diagnosed with acid reflux whenhe was three weeks old. they tried a couple things but nothing seemed to work until they put him on axid. the stuff is amazing, it works so well at one point i thought maybe he had outgrown it when he was a year old so i took him off of it for two days to see how he would react and he once again started spitting up! i put him back on it and he is great. hopefully he will outgrow it at some point but until he does the axid works wonders for him and he is 14 months old.

My son was on Prevacid for years. It worked very well AND comes in a powdered form you put in water and they drink it first thing in the morning.
It was awesome!
I will tell you that my son has allergies, asthma, eczema as well... and we did soy products from the get-go, and that Prevacid was the only thing that helped.
I made his foods, did everything organic, etc...
I agree that in some cases drugs should be a last resort, however, sometimes they are the only thing that helps.
But don't feel like you are doing something WRONG or BAD if you use the drugs. Try many things...
Good luck

I would suggest going to a GI doctor. My son had reflux very bad, he ended up needing surgery.

BUT there are many other options and pedi's are often cautious with their approach to reflux. I would try prevacid and make sure he is on a strong enough dose. My son was on an adult dose, which worked well for him for awhile. It might be that he just needs a stronger dose!

Our pediatrician prescribed Prevacid soluable tablets when the previous medication he prescribed didn't work very well (I can't remember the name). Prevacid is doing wonders!!!!! After the 1st week, she spit up about a 1/4 of what she was spitting up, and the longer we used it, the better it got. Now, we're lucky if she spits up at all!!! She is now 13 months old and is almost ready to stop taking it. It is an amazing difference. Hope this helps you!

On a holistic front, find out waht he is allergic to. Not talking allergy tests, but, take him off of everything and gradually (week by week) add a new food item. see what he doesn't reflux with. Don't forget to try no milk (cow) or wheat products too. He can grow out of them if he has them now, but.. try and see if that helps.
