About Balls

Now now ladies, take a breath. I am talking about sports! I have a 2 year old son who has an obsession with balls, he has a basketball, football, soccer ball, baseball, kickball, small bouncy ball and big bouncy ball.

Plus I have 2 girls in soccer now, so they each have a soccer ball.

We have other balls (adult size) football, basketball, etc which are in the garage. But my 2 year old wants all the other balls all over the house and plays with them ALL THE TIME.

He is so into them, he has even brought one or two into his bed with him for a nap!

The problem is our house is 1350 sq ft and a split level so we have balls all over the place!

Any good tips to organize them? Putting them into bins doesn't work well, they end up taking too much space...

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Ah! Once they find the balls....

We had a tall mesh bin that had wire supports so it held all of his balls!

BioMom-- just played "Big Balls" recently for my 10 year old! Lol

I have no good tips.
My husband is a coach of two teams, two different size balls, and both of my boys play.
We have frickin' balls everywhere!
It doesn't matter if I put them away somehow they always make their way back out.
I guess you could just do what I do, put them away once everyone gets to sleep and then be ready for them to be out in the morning!

Use a mesh laundry bag!

Just don't call it a ball sack. Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

We have a rule, no balls in the house, period. There is no use for them in the house. The kids should learn they are not indoor toys and for outdoor use only. So start now and take a lot of them outside. If he wants to sleep with a ball have him use a stuffed one, like the shape of a pillow or something.

Otherwise all the balls get stored in the garage on shelves in tubs or in some manner that fits your storage systems.

I feel your pain! Balls, balls, balls ... They have taken over my house and the kid screams for more if he sees them in the store ... He's also 2.

in the beginning, we used the little buckets that are part of the toy organizer .... quickly outgrew that.

Then, we had one of the collapsible laundry baskets ... that was a problem, because when he reached for one deep in the basket ... all the others would fall over the edges of the collapsible bin.

Finally, we bought one of those rolling laundry baskets with the drawstring canvas liner. All the balls live in it and when it's time to clean up, I can roll it around while we pick them all up. I also keep his plastic bat, toy broom, and riding pole horse tucked in it. Works great. I got ours at BJs, but it is exactly like this one ... http://www.amazon.com/ORGANIZE-IT-ALL-ROLLING-LAUNDRY/dp/... ... I did not (and would not) pay $55 ...

Most of these balls should only be used outside.
The only exception I have for this is really soft nerf balls.
They can't hurt much or break things on the inside of the house.
Even small bouncy super balls can knock over lamps or other glass/breakable item.
You don't even want to KNOW how much damage a tennis ball can do if child decides to toss one into a fast moving ceiling fan (they can attain great speeds and go right through multiple pane glass windows - fortunately I don't have direct experience with this but I know people who do).

So storing the bulk of your ball collection should stay in the garage.
(If the 2 yr old drags the outside balls into the house - tell him 'No' - they are for outside use only - he can play with them outside - only soft nerf balls inside the house.)

Check this out:

About halfway down the page is a 'Kid-friendly ball corral'.

Something like this might help keep the balls in order in the garage and is easier to get one out of the bottom than other sorts of bins.

We always kept them outside, with the rest of the outside toys. We had a big "little tikes" outdoor toy box that held all that stuff (balls, bats, golf clubs, etc.) but a large plastic laundry basket would work well too.

We keep ours in a rubber made tub. When they are done they have to put it back. Luckly mine have grown out of that faze in their lives and don't really play with balls a lot.

Could you, say, mount a plastic basketball hoop to the wall, with a big bin beneath it? I say this b/c I am all about tricking kids into cleaning up after themselves, and this might do the trick.

put a basket in every room he likes to be in. then you can store the balls in their when hes not playing with them. or you can get a kiddie pool (if his room is big enough or if you have a room big enough) then he can have a ball pit :)

Sorry if I am repeating, as I don't have a lot of time to read your answers... I say get one of those nets that hold toys. You can hang it in the garage or put one in the bedrooms to hold them. :)

Haha! That is so cute :) I keep a bunch in the basement in a big rubbermaid, one in the living room in a little pull toy and one upstairs in a bin. The rest are in the garage, pretty willy-nilly. I think it helps just having one in the "living areas" but only my two year old is ball-crazy :)

Balls stay outside in a large storage bench.

I would get some into one of those corner nets you hang from the ceiling. Then rotate daily for more fun. I don't agree with the PPers that said to keep them outside. A 2 year old does not throw a ball that hard and it's cold outside for many months per year. We keep our balls in the house we just have a no throwing in the house rule unless it's a little throw between me and the 3 year old while he is practicing catching.
