Hi Moms, We recently found out that we are haveing a girl. We have had a name that we like for quite a while and are thinking of using it. The problem comes when I look up the meaning of the names. I love the meaning for the first name and one of the middle names but not Marie. It means Bitter and I just dont want to do that. So my question is can you help me find a replacement that would have the same flow as Marie. The first name will start with A and be 3 sylables long Then for a middle name it will be Elsa ??????? and our last name starts with an I. Backeground is I have two middle names and Would like my daughter to have them too. If I can find the right one.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well for now we are going wit Alana Elsa Marie I. Nothing else just seemed to fit. Now that all could change in the next couple of weeks but I am pretty sure that will be her name, unless she comes out a boy.

If you really like Marie as a name, it may help to know that in some books it comes up as a derivative of Mary, which is biblical.

2 syllables that flow like Marie, hmm.... Monet' (pronounced mo-nay) flows nice. It means "to be heard".. If you have any French in you that would be a plus too, I think it sounds pretty.
Let us know how you pick.

Both our kids, boy & girl, have family names. Doesn't matter to us what the meaning is in a book, it's the cherished people that they are named after that counts.

Marie means bitter sea (I just looked it up). Gee, I've lived 48 years with that middle name and I never knew it meant that! (I'm not worried about it.)
My sister is Elsa Rose, and she always hated being associated with the lion (Elsa from Born Free and Elsie the cow).
Mary is really close and so is Maya. Ann (Anne) is also a popular middle name.
I work for a company that deals with a lot of foreign names and some of them have 7 (or more) middle names. It wreaks havoc with the employee data base. I honestly don't know how they deal with business cards - they'd have to be the size of 3" X 5" cards in order to fit the whole name and that still wouldn't leave room for the job title and company name in any sort of font size that would be readable without a magnifying glass.

What about Maria.......or Mariah..... And if the other names are sweet, why not Marie......life can be bitter and sometimes we have to be too....even if we don't want to........Everything in this world is not always sugar and spice and everything nice.

Good Luck with the names and congratulations on the new baby girl......take care.

My middle name is Marie.... and I know a lot of girls my age with the same middle name so it must have been a popular one back then. Choosing names based on their meaning can be helpful, but if you really like the name then just go with it. Trust me, not many people, if anyone, are going to run to their name dictionary when you unveil your daughter's name :) Another option would be to give her one of your middle names, or your first name as her middle name. If it doesn't flow perfectly that's okay, how many times do you say your whole name out loud anyhow? One thing I would definitely make sure of though, is that her initials won't spell anything regrettable.

Give her one of your middle names. My middle name is the same as my mothers (I also have two). Both of my daughters have two middle names (one is the name shared by my mother and I). Their daughters also have two middle names (including the one shared by all of us).

Louise has the same accent pattern as Marie (weak-strong), also the "ee" sound in the second syllable. Also Kathleen.

A friend of mine is named Veree--rhymes with Marie, just starts differently. Don't know what it means though.

Renee? Diane? Jeannette? Joelle? Noelle? Chantal? Elise? (yep, I was a French major!) These all have the weak-strong accent pattern.

I also like the other moms' suggestions of Christine, Rose, and Mae (or May).

Hope that helps!

I'm pretending Angela is the first name you're using (after all, it is my name)...

Angela Elsa Louise (Louise meaning famous warrior)
Angela Elsa Suzanne (Suzanne meaning lily)

Good luck!

If you like the name, why change it? Who cares what the 'meaning' of names are anyways? Most people don't have a clue and don't care. One of my daughters has Marie as her middle name and we think it's great. She loves it. It doesn't mean "bitter" just because someone arbitrarily came up with that -- it means her great-grandma's first name. A wonderful women who was anything but 'bitter'!!

I know several women named Marie and it's a nice name. If you like the sound of it, then use it.

What is wrong with Marie? My middle name is Marie. But I do like what a couple of other people posted. Elsa Mae is cute.

Lol. I was going to suggest Mae as well.
Meanings are deal breakers for me too.
And both my kids have 2 middle names-I hyphenate them-haven't had any problems.
HTH!
