A Cough in a Newborn

My 2 and a half week old has been having a really deep cough. nothing else but that. well a lot of spit up too but i think that's normal. the coughing is getting more and more frequent. Should i be worried and should i call his doctor? He was born a healthy baby at 8 pounds 3 ounces. No health problems at the time of birth. I never had these problems with my first son. I wonder if I'm just being paranoid? Any advice? Anyone have this happen to their child?

What can I do next?

Yes, you should call the doctor! Personally, I never think a call to the doctor is silly. That's what they are there for. To tell you weather or not to worry.

Go to the doctor immediately and ask about the Pertussis outbreak in California. They need to be aware as soon as possible, even if it isn't Pertussis (whooping Cough).

I would take her to the medical doctor. The same thing happened with my little girl when she was an infant. I thought I was being paranoid but took her in anyway. She had RSV! They admitted her into the hospital! And I thought it was just a cough! Please give your pediatrician a call. Better safe than sorry!

Yes, definitely talk to your pediatrician. They may ask you to get a cool mist humidifier. I've found those to be helpful with respiratory issues.

call the dr and check. sometimes they can have newborn congestion that just has to go away and sometimes it can be something more serious. newborn congestion may be a stopped up nose and a little bit of a dry cough...sometimes a humidifier will help as will a steamy bathroom. he would not have fever with newborn congestion.

when my son was born he had a little cough and sneezed alot. it seemed like we were always suctioning his little nose. alot of docs offices will have a line you can call to ask a question like that and a nurse will call you back with a solution. when i called concerned she told me that newborns lungs are still developing and that congestion is common. to help them along she told me to get a humidifier and use it each day for a week or so. my sons cough and sneezes stopped after that week. you can also buy, depending on the type of humidifier you use (i got a vicks brand), vicks vapor products that work with the humidifier to assist with the problem. or you can always call the doc and just ask if that eases your mind! :)

Hello, I would call your baby's doctor. This could be a virus, cold, or maybe allergies. Either way, it should be checked.
Good luck with your precious family.

I always call the doctor. I have a healthy 11 month old now, but when he was 5 weeks he got bronchiolitis and was hospitalized. I don't want to scare you, but iut started with a cough, then sneezing, then he wouldn't eat and got pale. I had to rush him to the ER and he was in the hospital for 5 days until they could make him better. At least if the doctor can listen to the baby's lungs, they can tell you whether or not to be concerned.

When our son was a newborn he had excessive mucous in his nose, but I don't recall a cough. I would say to call your pediatrician to make an appointment and have him or her listen to you baby's lungs. Whooping cough (AKA pertussis) is going around in CA and can be quite dangerous to a newborn.

call your Dr! And have yourself, your husband, and every other adult who regularly spends time with your child (ie. grandparents, babysitter, etc) vaccinated for whooping cough. Even if you were all vaccinated as kids, the immunity wears off. There's an outbreak in CA and it can be very serious in little babies.

Best of luck!

Congratulations on your little boy. Yes, definately call the dr, like someone else said, the outbreak of whooping cough is high this year. It could be nothing, but no since taking a chance. While he may be to young yet for the vacanations right now, get yourself vacinated to help protect him.

You don't say if you are nursing E.. Definitely take your baby to the doctor but there are things you can be doing to improve his immune system and it is very easy if you are nursing.

Take Vitamin D3 - up to 10,000 mg a day if you are sick (for adults!). Taking 2,000 to 4,000 mg a day on a regular basis is good for most

Omega 3 - a good one like from Nordic Naturals (the best but also the most expensive - go to Sprouts or Henry's and look for sales) and Carlsons. 2,000 mg a day is good

Think about replacing dairy and soy with Almond, Hemp or Rice milk products, at least for the first year.

I agree with Stephanie P. No harm in taking him in to get it checked out, especially with the whooping cough outbreak. You aren't fully protected by the shots until you have had 3, which is at the 6th month, so you are still in that worry range, I'm sorry to say. Trust your gut and just call the dr! They don't care... Better safe than sorry.

Hi E.!
I'm not one to call the doctor for every little cough and sniffle. In fact, my husband thinks I should call the doctor more often. With the scare of pertussis (whooping cough) going around, I would definitely call and make an appointment with your doctor. It's probably nothing. Infants have such sensitive systems and he's getting used to everything in the air. However, it wouldn't hurt to get him checked out. Your doctor may think you're worrying for no reason, but who cares? I wouldn't ignore anything going on with a newborn. Good luck!

I would call your son's Dr office and speak w/ a nurse. I've never had that with my 3 kids so I'm not sure if you should worry or not but I would think they would probably want to see him to check him out. Better safe than sorry.

Definitely see the doctor asap. I called the doctor for everything when my son was that age. I didn't care if they thought I was crazy (or my husband thought I was crazy) - it's better to be safe then have a sick child. There is definitely whooping cough going around or it could be the croup or it could be nothing.... but when the baby is under a year old, check everything out.

Good luck! I hope he feels better soon.

Definitely call the Dr. They are there for you at any hour and will determine the severity of it and make the best recommendations. My lil one coughed alot too and we found that she has a hard time breaking down mucus and we gave her benedryl. But Dr has to prescribe it under 6 mos old so I would not advise giving her any now. Your lil one may is too young for that and her condition did not start until she started getting teeth. I would definitley call and make sure it is nothing too serious. Good luck.
