9 Yr Old Son Peeing Everywhere

I have a 9yr old son who continues to pee all over the bathroom (floor, tub, wall), as well as in his closet. This has been consistent for the last few years and I simply wrote it off as a "boy" phase. However now he is getting older and still doing it. Is this normal, should I talk with a professional?

Both my husband and I have tried to speak with him about this and at the time he is very apologetic and seems as if he cant help it. We have told him to he needs to sit down to pee, however he refuses. I make him clean it up on a regular basis, but this doesn't seem to correct the behavior. He has never been a sleepwalker and the only "disorder" he has is ADD.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

No, this is NOT normal.

He is nine years old - he KNOWS where the toilet is....

ADD is not an excuse to pee where ever you want. This is not acceptable.. I would talk to the pediatrician and then find a counselor that will help him with tools and not just medicine to control his ADD...

Continue to make him clean up his mess...

I'm truly sorry!!

No, This is not normal.

If he was 3 or 4 some boys do some of this, but not as bad as you describe. I had a 3 to 4 year old that would pee outside, until he peed on an electric cattle fence. Then he went wee wee wee all the way home. ;~))

Good luck to you and yours.

Not normal.

How is his family life? I think he needs attention, and a minimizing of "discipline." Without knowing anything about it, that would be my guess.

A professional is in order.

Nope not normal. Some underlying issue going on. I would talk to the doctor and maybe some counseling is needed.

Definitely not normal. Little tiny boys will miss when they're still learning, but that's about the extent of normal 'peeing everywhere'. Talk to his pediatrician I would think.

No. This is not normal behavior. I would start by really evaluating when this behavior began. Also consider what other behaviors your son may be engaging in or displaying and at what point those may have began, for example sleeping with his door closed, when he used to sleep with it open or vice versa, being uncomfortable with other people - adults and/or other children - when previously he was not, being withdrawn or the opposite - more outward-behaving, difficulty at school, either educationally, behaviorally or socially. Often, a physical (often sexual) or emotional trauma triggers the onset of behaviors such as this. Have you ever or do you allow your son to use public restrooms (other than at school) unaccompanied? I know this sounds like a lot of areas to evaluate, but there are many possibilities as to why your son is acting out in this way. He is obviously not able to discuss what is causing this behavior with you and/or your husband, probably out of fear or embarrassment. Does he have any other trusted adults with which he could speak - Youth Pastor, School Counselor...? If not, I would strongly urge you to find a qualified child psychologist or psychiatrist with which he can speak. Regardless of why he is exhibiting this behavior, he is seems to be either crying out for help for some reason or suffering from another disorder. I hope this helps and I am wishing you luck, and praying for your family, for clarity and a solution....

As far as I know, ADD and even ADHD don't cause toileting issues in children this old. And this behavior is not normal.

I would talk to your pediatrician and request a referral to a pediatric urologist. When do these issues happen most often? Does he EVER use the toilet appropriately? Does this only happen when he's stressed? Sleep walking? Over tired?

What about when he has a bowel movement?

I have a 9 year old son and although if sometimes gets on the seat and rarely on the floor, its not a major problem at all. I don't think peeing in the closet is normal at all. The mess in the bathroom could indicate a problem with his kidney (like reflux) or maybe his urethra opening isn't straight and it comes out sideways. I'd take him to a doctor.

My brother who is 10 years younger than me decided it would be "fun" to pee all over the bathroom. In the trashcan, on the wall, in the tub - all over. So, I (being the mean big sister) gave him his toothbrush (I had a new one for him, but he didn't know it at the time) a pail of bleach water and told him he had to scrub the entire bathroom with his toothbrush. I told him that I was the one who cleaned the bathroom and I didn't want to clean up his nasty pee. Needless to say, after the 2 hours of scrubbing the bathroom he never peed anywhere except the toilet again. Harsher than a lot of mom's opinion I know, but sometimes you have to make an impression that they won't forget. Good luck.

not normal. seems like it's on purpose? the kids in daycare used to do this all the time. but they did it on purpose. i wouldn't think that ADD has anything to do with it. sitting down might not help either. when my son sits and pees, the pee sprays out between the space and all over the floor.

My son is going to be 9 in Oct, I don't think this sounds normal. He never pees anywhere but directly in the toilet. I think there must be some kind of emotional issue going on. Clearly making him clean it up isnt helping. Good luck.

for the toilet, perhaps those targets that float so that he can aim at something. Is this at night when he is sleepy? Maybe he is so asleep that he doesn't know he is peeing in the closet? My brother peed in the tupperware cabinet once - he thought it was the bathroom. We watched him do it and then he just walked right back to bed! Bye bye tupperware.

Anyhow if it is happening during the day, I think you do need to take him to the DR and also talk to him about it. Maybe he will talk with someone else? Good luck!

I don't know if it is normal or not, but I would just keep making him clean it up EVERY time. 9 is old enough to clean a bathroom. For him that can a regular chore. Make him responsible for the cleaning of the bathroom. If pee isn't everywhere, he cleans it one a week. If it gets messy, he can clean it daily. Maybe your husband can spend a little time in their with him so as to correct anything he isn't doing properly that causes extra mess.

This was NEVER normal boy behavior... I'd have him evaluated by a child psychiatrist or psychologist. Right away.

A urologist would be the SECOND specialist I'd see, sounds more of a mental disorder.

I don't understand how he "can't help" peeing in his closet; that's definitely not normal. What's the explanation for the closet? A trip to the pedi & some kind of mental health professional seems in order.
