Hello, my daughter is 9 months and she will not sit. I don't know if it is that she can't, or if she won't. If she does sit, it is like for 5 or so seconds, then she leans back, and falles over. She loves to be moving around, she hates to be still. I will try to have her sit, and she will stiffin out her legs so she can't sit, then she just rolls to her belly and starts to scoot, thats is another thing, she is not crawling just scoots, when do they start crawling, my other daughter started walking at 10 and 1/2 months, so I guess I think it is wierd for my other 9 month old to not be sitting or crawling, should I be concerned, her doctor says she is right where she needs to be. I got one of those Bumbo seats, she will sit in that for about a minute, then trys to get out of it, am I over reacting?? Help!

What can I do next?

My first son was walking at 9 mos. My 8 month boy/girl twins are just barely sitting and although neither are crawling yet, the boy has led the way on every physical milestone so far.

All kids are different and will develop at different times. I would not consider it a problem unless you doctot considers it a problem.

Your daughter is just fine where she is. My friend's son did the same thing with sitting. He would sit for a minute and then arch his back to get down so he could be mobile. She sees sitting as not being able to move. This way she is able to crawl or scoot when she is not sitting. I think she is perfectly fine!

I would not be too conerned right now. My daughter could only sit for a few seconds and really had no desire to. She was always on her belly scooting around. She started crawling between 10 and 11 months. It wasn't until after she was crawling that she would sit up. Bring it up at your next pedi appt just for your own peace of mind.

Did she EVER sit? and is just not interested now? Then all is normal. If she never sat then yes I would be concerned. As for the scooting I had a scooter - he never crawled just started walking one day. I also had one that crawled all over the place and didn't walk till he was almost 15 months old! while my other two walked around the same time about 10 months...three kids all different....Your daughter sounds like she loves to move around which is perfect for her age.

I noticed in your first sentence "she will not sit" there is a difference in will not and can not. If she can sit unsupported for any length of time but doesn't want to I wouldn't be alarmed. And since her Ped. said that she is right where she should be again I wouldn't be alarmed as of now. As far as the scooting goes...every baby will crawl or scoot until they are ready to walk...some babies never crawl.
I remember being so concerned because my son wouldn't roll from his back to his tummy...instead he would do a sit-up to get up in sitting position so he could get into crawling position. He was 9 1/2 months old before he rolled over. I have learned that babys are just like big people we all have different personalities and we do things at our own pace...my son...couldn't be bothered to be swift about anything..he like to take his time...He is walking now and is all over the place but take heart...she will fine. Just keep an eye out and trust your peds.

If she is physically able to sit but choses not to as opposed to being physcially unable to sit, I would not worry about it. My son (now 4) did not roll, crawl, scoot or otherwise move until 14 months. He would just sit there and play with stuff within his reach. I was sure that he would never walk. At 14 months he started crawling and rolling one night, and at 16 months he was walking. My pediatrician kept telling me he was fine...

If she is unable to sit, I would follow up with your dr.

You should contact your local Early On program or ISD. You can probably get the information thru your local Guidance Center or School. They will come to your home and evaluate your daughter and determine if she needs help. It is a free service for children birth to age 3.

I would not be too concerned yet. I have a few friends whose children did not crawl right away and then only crawled for a few weeks then walked. It sounds like Addison wants to move; a great sign that she is developing. My nephew rolled every where instead of crawled and today he is a healthy 8 year old.

Keep your eyes on her. I am not expert, but if your ped (and you trust your ped) is not too concerned right now neither should you.

Keep us posted.

Hi! Do you have a Birth thru 3 program in your area? They are great and will asses your child where she should be with her mile-stones! They will also give you hand outs and ideas for your child to excell.

Hi, B.. I will just echo what the others have said in that she is likely normal and they all develop at different stages. My daughter was only just beginning to sit up unsupported at 9 months. She scooted only occasionally from nine months to one year, but NEVER once crawled. She stood up a few days after her birthday and walked like a champ and never sat down again.

I know I worried about it at the time because all the other babes I saw at those ages were scooting, crawling, rolling over, etc., but I had a wonderful holistic pediatrician who quelled my fears, and now my daughter is a beautiful, athletic dancer and figure skater who is about to turn 14 years old next month!

B., Hi! My name is Dr. Rick Semlow and I am a chiropractor.

If a mother were to bring her child into my office with this scenerio there are several questions that I would ask.

First, does your child "army" crawl? Does he/she crawl only using the arms? Second, does your child stiffen his/her back when you change the diapers? Or does the child let his/her back curve?

Some of this answers may suggest wether or not your child is having back pain. Sitting is most stressful position on the spine. If she is only sitting for a few seconds, she MIGHT be trying to get out of a postion that is causing her pain.

You can find a chiropractor who is board certified in pediatric chiropractic care at www.mcpakids.org

Just one more route to look into.
