9 Month Has Had a Runny Nose for a Week

Hi,
First time mom here...My son has had a runny nose for about a week. It started out yellow but now it is clear. And he's started to have a mild cough and some days it looks like he has circle unders his eyes. I try to give him water through out the day..but he does not want to drink it. Should I call the doctor or just let it run it's course. He has not had a fever.

Thanks to all...I love this site and all the great advice.

What can I do next?

it may help to cut milk products, and if you hold a bottle of horseradish near his face that may help clear his sinuses. Sitting in a room with a hot shower may be a good idea as well. like the other poster said it does sound like he is getting better, in which case you can speed things up by really watching his diet - nothing processed or sugary. Grape juice helps clear up phlegm too, but brush his teeth after and never put it in a bottle. If he is nursing he might not need water, but it could help as you said. Also make sure he is getting enough electrolytes. This may help too:

Other than that just let the house go and be there to hold him so he can rest. Hope that helps!

Sounds like it could be allergies, but also, that he's on the mend. If it gets worse, call since it's been so long, but otherwise, I wouldn't worry.

Call your ped's office and let them determine if you should come in. The clear runny nose and dark circles may be due to teething. Visit www.askdrsears.com for symptom checks.
Good luck!

I would say that if your child is having a clear runny nose than you are most likely looking at teething. I would try to give my child frozen teething rings to chew on, and ensure that he has fluids at all times if he chooses to drink. If you get worried that he isn't getting enough fluids try flavored drinks to ensure that he is getting enough. Good Luck!

My pediatrician's criteria is two weeks with runny nose (green/yellow vs clear) and coughing (increases at night - wakes/keeps them up). At that point they may prescribe antibiotics for a sinus infection (which was the case for 9 month old - although she was teething as well - a double whammy).

Maybe wait it out another week? But you can always call the doctor to get their input/reassurance. It can never hurt!
