I don't know how close you live to Frisco but the Frisco Museum in Downtown Frisco has a gift shop with lots of old toys like slinkies and yoyos and tinker toys. Maybe some kind of celebration with things from their time would be fun.

My grandmother was born in a leap year and for her "16th" birthday a few years ago we had a party where each room was decorated from a different decade that she had lived in and guests came dressed as all different decades (40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s) It was really fun and she loved it.

How wonderful - my Dad is 91 and I know he loves the music from years ago, they would also enjoy pictures of their lives, maybe you all could do a CD or something like to show during the party of past years pictures of their lives and family.

How blessed you are to be able to do this for your Dad and his sister! We had my husband's Dad's 80th birthday party as a surprise for him. It was great. We had picture albums out and a large piece of paper for people to write their memories. It was wonderful. He loves to fish, so the cake was a fishing motif.

A friend of mine did a party where she took old photographs and had them copied and laminated. They were used as centerpieces with some of those wire frames where the pictures are above. I think having fun facts about their growing up time is great. Also you could have someone video the party (not necessarily professionally) for a keepsake for the both of them, freeing you up to be more a part of the party. I've also seen disposable cameras set at tables for the guests to participate in the picture taking. I think that's a neat idea.

They are going to be overwhelmed by the party itself. Your gift to them by throwing this party is priceless.

Hi T., last June I had my Dad's 90th birthday....the most meaningful thing we did was in the invitations (even to people you know can not come to the party) enclose a piece of stationery and ask them to write a story and include pics if possible of your dad and his sister....I enclosed a return envelope addressed to me...before the party, I went to Office Depot and had them bound like a spiral notebook...I guess you would have to have copies made so you would have two books...My dad continues to read the stories and look at the pics even a year later...it means a lot to him (I borrowed without his knowledge his christmas list for cards and sent out over 80 invitations so he has a large book)

Also you could take an old pic of them together and have Walmart put the pic on their cake in icing!

what about something like....two things that just go better together like peanut butter and jelly, oreos and milk, salty and sweet, sister and brother :) just a thought. Good luck with ideas!

I love the idea of a DVD "slide show." We did that for my aunt's 80th bday, and everyone loved it!

Your dad and his sis came of age in the late 40s early 50s. Think about how you can use that in your theme. Music would be pretty easy. You could also choose a decade and have people dress in theme. Possibly create a book with some fun facts of the time (minimum wage was 70 cents an hour, bottles of coke were 6 cents, most popular movies and songs from the time they were 16-21, what was invented in certain years, Howdy Doody pics, etc.) You could print some old ads from the internet (some are really hilarious now that we look back at them).
Maybe get some old magazines and popular books of the time to set out on tables (half price books; LIFE magazine).
Maybe find some old games that were played back then (marbles, slinky, paper dolls, raggedy ann, etc.)
You could probably even find somewhere to rent a late 40s car to give them a ride.
The possibilities are endless. And you could even throw in some twins stuff too!

Last summer we celebrated my grandmother's 80th birthday. It was a very large group of family and friends. For decor, we went with a floral motif - yellow roses mostly (her favorite). She loves nature and landscapes, so we thought it was fitting. We went simple..a few flowers as centrepieces (we just bought mixed bouquets and split them). I made a cake decorated with yellow roses. Someone bought her 80 yellow roses as a gift, so we used that to decorate the gift table. It was simple, inexpensive and elegant and since we rented a room at a restaurant the clean up was easy. I wonder if you couldn't do something similar with flowers that compliment each other.

hmmmmm...just reread this and saw it was your Dad...maybe flowers are a little too girly....this is a tough one!

I agree with Heather. Think about what is or was an important part of their lives. World War II? You could make each a collage of old photos, etc.... Play music from their era.

T., when my fath-in-law turned 80 last Oct. we decided that since he was born in the twenties, we would do a roaring 20's theme! We all dressed approprietely and it was a lot of fun. There are all kinds of costume shops around Dallas area that you can rent outfits or even buy.

You should try to get as many pictures of them when they were younger and make a slide show on your computer. You can play music along with it. If anyone else in your family /family was around they could give speeches. You could also do a 1920's theme, my grandma is their age and she has the best stories from that time period. She said it was great. Good Luck
