8 Month Old with Asthma

I took my 8 month old to the doctor yesterday because of a cough he has had for about 3 weeks now. The doctor said he is asthmatic. He told me they don't really diagnose them with asthma untill around 3 years of age, but he is calling what he has as a respitory abnormality. He started him on breathing treatments he must have 3 times a day for the next two weeks. But since he started them he has a much worse cough and has a hard time catching his breath at times. Does anyone have a child with asthma or know if this is normal? I thought he would get better not worse. Thanks for the help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So far he is still not getting any better, but we are working on making some changes to hopefully help. We found that the investors who remodled our house before selling it to us had left old drywall peices in the vents! So that could be a major factor. We are going to have our air ducts cleaned, but this is going to cost a fortune because they have to remove so much material. I think we are going to try and find a home for our cat also. We love her, but our sons health is more important. Thanks for your responses!!

I don't know if they can test for allergies at that age but you should check out www.alcat.com it talks all about allergies and the special test they do. I've had it done and I was amazed ...it is through a blood test. Also, I don't know if you would be interested but you should check out the enviroment...dust pets..etc. I am a distributor for Shaklee products they have products that cover air, water, body and cleaning. I switched all of my cleaning products over to Shaklee non toxic cleaners because I have a lot of allergies and immune system issues...and they are the only products that I don't react to. The man who bought Shaklee 2 years ago has a son with asthma and they worked at finding things that didn't cause him to react and one of them were Shanklee cleaners...they had such good results...he decided to buy the company...It is crazy but it is true... check out my website if you are interested www.shaklee.net/healthyandsafe I hope you find something that helps your son...God Bless!

Don't fear the excess coughing is now do to the fact that his medication is breaking up all the yucky stuff in his chest. There are no quick fixes to anything. It does take a few days to clear up. My son was diagnosed at 2 and a half as asthmatic. And it took almost a year until he wasn't constantly sick. He used to get sick typically pneumonia for about 2 weeks and then healthy for about 1 week. He has now been consistantly healthy for almost a year with only the occasional cold in between. You can ask for a referral to an allergist. I reccomend dr. Kishore at akron children's he is a good doctor and great with kids. Goodluck, jocey

I also just found out my daughter might have asthma. She is 2 1/2 and like you, they weren't able to give an official diagnosis because she isn't old enough yet. I've heard a lot of kids grow out of it so we have our fingers crossed. We did the breathing treatments three times a day. It did seem to take a while before the cough got better - it was several days at least before we noticed a difference. The treatments didn't seem to make it any worse though. If his cough seems much worse, I think I would call his doctor's office especially because he is so young just to check to see if that is a common or to see if they want to switch him to a different treatment. After doing the treatments for several days, I did notice that her lips were chapped from it and the skin around her nose was dry so maybe it is drying his airway out and irritating his throat. Sorry I can't be of more help. I hope he gets better soon! Good luck!

Hi S.,
My sisters little girl had bad allerges and asthma from day one. I told her it could be from the products that she was using in her home! I switched to a new wellness company and got her to switch also! Her little girl went from 3 breathing treatments a week to going for 5 years with out a symptom! Email me for more information! It could help out.
