8 Month Old Vomiting Only Baby Food

I am reallly confused. My 8 month old starting running fever and has a cough and congestion. I took him to the doctor and they said he had a cold and gave him a decongestant. By that evening when I fed him his supper he immediately threw it all up. He still was acting hungry so I fed him a bottle of formula and he tolerated it just fine. All the next day he would act hungry but if we fed him baby food within thirty minutes he threw it up. However, he would tolerate formula and pedialyte. He also has had one diarreha diaper. When I called the doctor's office they just said that is was probably a stomach virus and to just watch him for dehydration. He has been acting normal. He is not extra fussy, irritable or extra sleepy. I just find it odd that he only throws up his baby food and not the formula also. Has anyone else had this happen or what could it be?

What can I do next?

It may be the consistancy of the food. Formula and pedialyte are smoother and a liquid, where the baby food is thicker. Right now he just may not be able to handle the thicker consistancy. So I would just appease him until he kicks the bug then go back and reintroduce the baby food.

Have you ever been sick to your stomach and could tolerate sipping some water or ginger ale? But just try to eat a cheeseburger and, drawing inspiration from this websites sidebar, it makes you want to leggo your eggos?

I would say it's probably like that. Keep the formula coming and be thankful he's tolerating it. I would also try to let him nibble on some Jello or something like that that might fulfill his desire to eat but might be easier to keep down. Just stay away from the cherry flavored Jello. It stains.

Good luck!

Poor baby... It may be a nasal drip with the congestion that's causing the regurgitation... Like a reflex (if you've ever had a nasal drip you know what i mean)
Bless her heart... My daughter had the same symptoms. It helped to use an aspirator to suction out the nasal passages. Our nearby Health food store had a natural baby safe honey syrup for her sore throat from coughing too.
+ I would slightly elevate her head with a receiving blanket folded a few times (not too big) This helped tremendously :) She slept straight through the night :) no vomiting.

Once you've ruled out if it's a virus, try making your own baby food, it's super easy and way healthier. Blend up an avocado with raw apple, mash up a mango, so many options. I noticed a couple times when I fed my baby jarred food she totally had diarreha, like there was some bacteria in it or something. Most of the time it's fine but you're not the one making it so you don't know!

This is something that is going around big time in my town, and we just got over it with my baby. Do not try to feed anything other than pedialyte and maybe small amounts of rice cereal until he gets over this. Push the pedialyte more so than the cereal, and be prepared for the cereal to come back. Hydration is the most important thing. Saltine crackers might help, too. Formula and any other kind of dairy product is going to make it all worse.

Hi J.,
Not sure this is the same thing but my kids which are older now would do the same thing when they were younger and got colds. They would vomit only food but could keep liquids down. This would happen almost every time they got a cold. My youngest son who is 14 now will still do it. I figured out that it was due to all the mucus running down their throats into their stomachs. Apparently their stomachs would get to full of mucus and when they ate, their stomachs would get over stuffed and so they would vomit. Jacob will complain that he is nauseated and the next thing I know he is running for the rest room. They never had diarrhea so like I said I am not sure it is the same thing. But the vomiting was a norm around our house when my boys got/get colds. Hope everything works out for you and your little one. Good luck and God bless.

Too much flegm can cause a child to throw up. Food is harder to swallow too and will just get stuck. Liquids go down better as it doesn't get "stuck". I would just stick to fluids right now and get back on schedule once he is feeling better. He will also fill up faster with all that drainage. It will also cause loose stools in his diaper, but it's not diarrhea - just a bunch of drainage.

I personally would get a new pedi. I never had a fever with a cold and it doesnt seem as if they are finding the problem with his sickness. God bless your little one hope he feels better soon.

Baby food is harder to digest than formula... If you had steak dinner, then an energy drink then threw up - you would vomit the steak but not the drink because it had already absorbed into your system... And remember that at this age - his eating is only to "practice" learning how to eat food, not so much for nutrition. Most of your sons nutrition comes from formula.

Hope that he gets better soon.

At this age, his digestive system is still learning how to digest food. He's not really getting much in the way of nutrition from it. With a cold, there is a lot of extra mucus in the stomach, which can be an irritant (and cause diarrhea). The food is probably just a little too much for his system to take right now. I would just stick with the formula and maybe a little rice cereal until the cold clears up.

That happened to us around Thanksgiving. I switched his baby food to only bananas or apple sauce (easiest on the tummy). I then prepared myself for vomiting at least once during the day. Because he didn't have a fever the daycare took him. I think it was just something that went around. I did add extra bottles of pedilight to help with dehydration. He would only take an ounce at a time so lots of small bottles.
