My 8 mo old grandson keeps getting his legs caught in his crib to the point he awakens angry and upset. My daughter does have bummpers but his legs go through the bottom. Any suggestions to help keep him "inside" his crib?

What can I do next?

What I did when my kids were that young, is I sort of tucked the bumper down between the matress and the crib rails. That way it stayed in place and there was no room under the bumper where the kids could wiggle their legs or arms into and get caught and wake up. Good luck!

I'd do the breathable bumper as suggested- worked great for my son and already have them in the crib for use with our twins on the way. I got mine at Babies-R-Us. They're great!

Try putting the bumper pads down lower and if it keeps happening ona certain side, you might be able to hang a larger blanket and then also make sure it is tucked it good so that the baby doesn't get hurt. I hope this helps,

Is this a hand-me-down crib? Newer ones have narrower slats that prevent a kid from getting stuck.

My daughter started doing that, as well, a few months back. My husband and I came up with an easy cheap solution. We bought 3 yards of a netting material at Wal-Mart (which was around 70 cents a yard). Then we placed it over the top of the crib railing, so that it hung over both sides, and the ends were at the bottom of the railing. Then, we pulled everything tight, and my husband zip-tied (although, if you don't have those, I'm sure you could find some string or something that would work) along the bottom of the railing and the sides of the top. It works out great! No more getting up in the middle of the night 5 times to put her back in her crib. It's probably the cheapest, safe solution you'll find. The netting allows them to breathe, even if they get right up next to it, but there's nothing in the crib that won't let them move, and, therefore, makes a mobile baby frustrated. I hope that helps!

I dont know how to help you for sure, but would caution you that next time it could be his head getting stuck! That happened to my daughter twice in the middle of the night - supser scary!. For my daughter, it was enough to tuck the bumper pad down 1/2 way into the mattress (so only about 3-4 inches peeks out of the mattress. It's enough to keep her from jurting herself when she rolls into the crib rails. If you have a super squirmy little guy, that is more dangerous. Or you could try putting the bumper on the outside of the crib rails. The last thing you want is him getting stuck, struggling and getting more stuck. I think you should consider losing the bumper all together..

When my daughter began rolling over from her back to her tummy, she'd start crying several times during the night because she couldn't roll back over to her back. So, I bought two of those wedges (available at Target), which were made to put under the crib sheets to raise her head, and placed them in the crib the long way (under the sheet). The higher edges were touched the sides of the crib, and the lower edges met in the middle perfectly. We laid her down to sleep in the "valley" and because the edges sloped upward, she couldn't roll up the slope. So, she wasn't able to roll over to her tummy. We all had great nights of sleep after this! This might help your grandson from being able to roll all over the crib and get his legs stuck! Hope this helps!

I had to tuck my bumper between the crip and the mattress that way he couldn't get under it.

I read somewhere, possibly babycenter.com or babyzone.com that after 6 mo of age that they are not supposed to have the bumper on the any longer. It's a death trap if they should get caught and couldn't breathe. I took each of my kids off once they reached 6 mo of age.

Our son kept on doing this - we got a breathable bumper (available at Babies R Us) and you just need to be sure that it is tucked in between the mattress/crib slats a couple inches. Ours will start creeping up, so I have had to adjust it weekly, but it seems to work!

I can relate to your frustration. My third daughter always got stuck in the craziest places. Regular bumpers never worked because she would just squeeze under or even use them to stand on. The best thing I found was from One Step Ahead and they may have it at BabiesR Us is the breathable bumper. It basically goes all around the crib and tucks below the mattress. She NEVER got her leg caught in the bars again and the bumper was so snug to the railing she couldn't use the bumper as a stepping stool either.

It sounds like you have gotten some good advice. I haven't seen those mesh things from Toys R Us, but they sound like they would work. For my daughter we got a crib tent that covers the whole crib (top and sides). It was more than we needed when she was young but now it is nice because it prevents her from climbing out. We got ours from Walmart's website. They ship it to any Walmart store for no additional charge. Good luck!

My daughter had the same problem! We got mesh crib 'bumpers' that go farther down below the level of the mattress and those successfully kept her arms & legs from getting stuck. We got them at Babies R Us, and they're also available online. (To clarify, they're not really bumpers at all, they're mesh panels that velcro around the crib rails.)
