8 Days Late and 2 Pregnacy Test Have Come Out Negative

I haven't been on BC for almost 4 months now. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. In July, I had started my period on the 4th and it was regular, so I was expecting to start again on the 4th of August, but I actually started on the 28th of July but it only lasted 2 days. Obviously I've been irregular, so I was expecting to start again anywhere between the August 28th and September 4th, but still nothing. I took an off-brand HPT as well as a name brand HPT, but they both came out negative. A lot has been going on in my little family so it's been extremely stressful, and financial burden has hit us pretty hard. I also had a baby 7 months ago. What is going on with me? We aren't trying to have another baby for awhile, we already have two kids.

****EDIT****
Well, still haven't gotten my period...I'm now 2 weeks late....took another test still came out negative. I'm trying to get some money to go take a blood test.....but right now its really hard. And I'd love to go back on BC....but when your in a financial rut and you're barely able to pay the bills, that's one thing that we just can't do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

So....after waiting for over 2 weeks, I finally got my period. My husband and I are so grateful because we're barely starting to get back on our feet and adding another baby to the picture right now would be very hard on us. Thank you all for the kind words, and the advice. I guess stress really can change your body like crazy!

You should probably go to the dr for a blood pregnancy test. Two of my friends took multiple home pregnancy tests that said negative when they were actually pregnant. God Bless

If you are pregnant, you will know soon enough. With my first child, I was very irregular. I began to just take a pregnancy test once a week. Finally the test came back positive. My last period was in October. My son was born Sept. 13. If you're irregular these things don't always add up.

Stress, weight loss, and hormone irregularities from having a baby or going off of birth control can all effect your cycles.

the same thing happened to me a couple of months ago, i think when my son was about 7 months old. ever since i have stopped nursing him (when he was 3 months old), my body just can't seem to adjust. i also was going through some emotional stress at the time, so i'm sure that didn't help. i used to be very predictable with my cycle (not on bc pills either) but now it seems to vary between 30-36 days. pregnancy tests are sensitive enough to be positive even before you miss your period (from my experience), so i doubt you just need to wait longer.
hang in there! hormones do some crazy things to your body.

Your doctor can do a blood pregnancy test. It's more sensitive then the HPTs that you took. There are many reasons for a missed period, not the least of which is stress. However,if it were me, I would call my doctor. The peace of mind would be worth it to me (not to mention the money saved on continuing to purchase HPTs!)

Good luck!

Pregnancy tests do not work when you are only 8 days late. I think you have to be 3-4 weeks late for there to be enough of the pregnancy hormone in your urine. If you need to know now, go to your doctor and they will give you a blood test. Then you'll know for sure. Otherwise, wait 3 weeks and test again. You could very well be pregnant. I am sorry about your financial burden. A pregnancy now certainly won't help. Best of luck.

Hi A.,
Best of luck to you. I know the stress of being under huge financial stress and wondering if I'm pregnant on top of that. Stress can do weird things to cycles.

Once the answer is known - likely with the start of your period, I would highly recommend taking the birth control issues off the table with some form of more effective/less "user error" method. I had an IUD between kids and loved it and never had to worry.

You may have to pay a co-pay for it, but I'd bet good money that it's less expensive than another baby... =)

Good luck!!!

a friend of mine just went thru this. Ask your Dr. Turns out she was the 1 out of 5 on her type of BC that misses periods.

You certainly do not need the stress of worrying about a pregnancy. You can go to Planned Parenthood and have a pregnancy test performed for a minimal fee. Then you will know.

If you are not pregnant, I would suggest discussing birth control methods with the medical staff and find a method that works for you and that will free you from the worry of another pregnancy.

If you are pregnant, congratulations! Sometimes the best surprises are the ones we didn't know we wanted.
