Hello-
My son just started crawling and the problem is that we have hardwood floors all over our 1st floor. His poor little knees are already very red. Does anyone know of anything to help this? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Try cutting the feet out of a pair of socks and putting them over his knees. I had those baby knee protector for my first son and that's all they were was socks without feet.

Hi A.,

My son wore a leg warmer type product called Baby Legs and that worked on tile and wood floors. You can get them different places. Angel Babies in Olathe has them.

I'd suggest rubbing a barrier guard on his knees to protect them from skin breakage or rawness. You can use A&D ointment...that's the best.

My son crawled on our hardwood floors, and they are 100 years old and in need of replacing. I was worried about splinters, but he's only had one, and he's 2.5. Otherwise he was fine, although when he crawled, I kept him in pants or long shorts. I really wanted him to be able to explore anywhere, so I always made sure he was dressed for it. Watch out, though, he did crawl barefoot on a driveway once and scrape up the tops of his feet. He didn't seem to mind even that, but it made me feel terrible!

I actually just saw little knee pads for this exact problem in a catalog called "One Step Ahead." You might look online for them. Good luck!

We have hard wood floors too and what I found worked was to put knee pads on my daughter! I took some new soft and cushy long sweat socks and cut the toes and/or feet off of them. Then you put them on over his little legs and double them up until they cover from about his mid thigh to right below his knee. My daughter never tried to take them off and they worked like a charm. Hopefully you have air conditioning b/c the only negative I can think of this time of year would be that they could make him hot! They look like volleyball knee pads - actually pretty cute. Good luck!

At the child care center where I work, when the babies are outside this is what they do:
get some tube socks and cut the top off about 4 to 6 inches below the top. Then, you can slip this over his knees when he is crawling around. It's not that "cute" but it would help his little knees.

I cut up a pair of my husband's old socks and made knee pads for our daughter out of them when she was crawling. I know babies r us sells something similar in their babyproofing aisle. Or you could put leggings on him when he's crawling around. if your house is airconditioned he shouldnt get too hot. Good luck!

You might want to get him some Babylegs. They are adorable little leg socks that go up over their legs with onesies, just diapers, etc. that would help protect his knees. We have hardwood and when my daughter was in that stage, that's what I used when she had on something other than pants. I know Taylor's at Town Center has them, but you can also find them online at lots of places that offer free shipping or discounts.

There's a product out called Baby Legs. They are basically leg warmers, the kind kids wore in the early 80's. They make pretty cool colors/patterns for both girls & boys. I have hardwood floor too & my baby uses them. They really do work. The only problem is finding them. I know City Sprouts in The Loop of University City has them, but other than that, you might need to get them on-line. They aren't expensive either.

I would either put him in pants -I know its hot but if you have the AC on, it should not be an issue. You could also try long tube socks -these might have trouble staying up though. Another option would be to put down area rugs. My nephew crawled on his feet - and as a result was walking at 9 months. My sister lived in California at the time and they had tile floors which my little guy did not like the feel of.They tried the pants thing, but he was already used to crawling the way he knew how. Anyway, good luck to you!! E.

I recently got some BabyLegs for my daughter just to keep her legs warm in the AC--even though she's far from crawling yet. I'm pretty sure you can get them at CottonBabies in South County--www.cottonbabies.com.

We also have hardwood floors throughout our house. Some ideas...terry wrist bands for adults...they fit right around their knees like kneepads, pants...duh! :-), rubber floor mats that you buy at Sam's. A few ideas. Hope you can make it work.

One of my little girls has extremely sensitive skin. When she started crawling, her little knees would turn so red. I cut a pair of my socks and made her knee pads out of them. Sounds silly, but it did help!

My son started crawling about a month ago, and we have hardwood as well. The only thing that seems to help is have him wear pants. He doesn't care if he wears shorts or pants, but it makes me feel better. I really don't think the hardwood bothers him at all. Babies are tough.

Hello! We have hardwood floors as well and what I did was buy "Baby Leggs." They are so cute and go from thigh to foot and come in different colors and have cute designs. You can buy them at www.mom4life.com and she ships them for free and there's no tax. I even have my 3 year old daughter wear them in the fall with a skirt. They look so cute on! I hope you find some that you like!

I bought some soft little knee pads for my baby but her legs were too chubby. You could get kids tube socks and cut the feet out of them to slide on your babies knees.

YOU CAN CHECK THESE OUT IF YOUR WILLING TO SPEND THE MONEY, BUT KIDS ARE TOUGH AND BESIDES AT T HIS AGE THEY DONT HAVE KNEECAPS SO ITS NOT HURTING THEM TO CRAWL ON THEIR KNEES.

One of my kiddos wanted to crawl around on concrete at grandma's house one day. The concrete patio was scratchy but it didn't seem to bother her-just us. We happened to have terry cloth wrist bands around-they helped. Later I found the little knee pads at a garage sale-not sure where to get them though. Overall, I don't think they really care about their knees, just what is on the other side of the room that they can finally reach! lol...

Baby Legs! They are like leg warmers for their whole leg (or arm, or wherever you want to wear them). You can find them on the internet and a couple of local stores sell them (Kids Again in Florissant, Cotton Babies in S. CO, and City Sprouts on the Delmar Loop, there may be others as well that I don't know about). It is also SUPER easy to make your own. Just get a pair of adult knee socks or at least calf length socks and cut the foot out of them, voila (!) perfect tube, just put it on your baby's legs and pull the top (the end that was the top of the sock originally) up over his thigh and it will pretty much cover his whole leg, and the cuff or hem around the top of the sock will hold it up on his thigh. You can bunch it up if you want to cover less of the leg, or cut the tube shorter (you could probably even just cut the cuff part off long mens tube socks and use that if you want short ones to just go over the knee). If you want to wear them out, you can hem the end you cut off. And there are lots of tutorials on the internet (for instance, search "baby legs" on www.craftster.org) for making supercute ones from neat adult knee socks. They are great knee protectors and fashionable as well! Oh, and they make changing a diaper a breeze because you don't have to take off any pants; and they are good too if you wear your baby in a sling or back carrier as they won't bunch up like pants do!

I completely loved Baby Legs for our daughter when she went through the crawling stage. They come in so many patterns and solids that you're bound to find something. They're easy to put on, don't get in the way of diapering and wash/dry well. Have fun!!!

I do know of these pads that I saw in a magazine I have at home that are for babies who crawl. I also have hardwood floors so I tabbed the page for when my son gets to that point. Send me a reminder and I will email you the name of them and where you can get them when I get home.

Hi A.,

You might try putting some "Baby Legs" on him. They are like little bitty legwarmers for babies. They are found in boutiques, however, I just saw them at TARGET the other day too. They have started to carry them there. In the baby section. They will protect his knees when he crawls. Good luck. :-) We also have hardwood floors throughout our home and when my youngest started crawling, I just made sure she wore cotton knit pants for awhile. :-)

He'll be fine, but they do have those baby knee pads.

Babies are born with kneecaps they just cartilage right now and harden around the age of 3 and boys 4/5 years of age.
