My daughter is 7 weeks old and I am almost positiove she is getting a tooth on the bottom. For the past week I have seen a little white nub and now it looks as if the skin broke. I gave her tylenol which helped, but has anyone ever heard of a tooth so young, and is it going to be bad for her? Another question is we are doing really well with the breastfeeding and I am scared now that she may bite me. What is the best way for us to continue feeding with as little pain involved for me?
Thanks in advance
C.

My daughter cut her first tooth at three days old and her second at five days old. At the ripe old age of eight months she had all of her teeth including her molars. The toothbrush is her best friend without toothpaste for now. Make sure you brush your baby's teeth after each feeding. Just remember that the earlier their teeth come in the earlier they fall out. Funny, my daughter was born Jan. 12, 2006.

My son (my first child) got his first tooth the day he turned two months. He got his second tooth the next day and had four by the time he turned four months old. He proceeded to get at least a tooth each month until he was ten months and between 10 and 12 months he got 6 more. He had 16 teeth on his first birthday. I only nursed him till he was 3 months (he was starving all the time and I couldn't keep up) but he never bit down on me. My next three nursed longer - but got their teeth a bit later too - and none of them ever really bit me either. Once or twice they would start to bite down and I would just push their head into my breast. When their nose forms a seal with your breast they instinctively release. But really that only happened a few times. Just a random side note...because he got his teeth so early my son started loosing his baby teeth before he turned 5. He has lost 9 teeth now and he is only 8 years old. Most of his friends are way behind him in the number they have lost. He has had his permanent teeth in the front top center for close to two years and most of his friends are waiting for theirs to come in. Kind of funny!

Hey! I have read that babies can be born with a tooth. It's unusal but it does happen.

What side of town do you live on? I take my son to the Silverado -Gilespi park. I wouldn't mind some adult convo either :)

With a tooth coming in so early could be a problem as she gets older in the months.. as she gets older it might start breaking down.. My cousins son is 2 yrs old.. his tooth came in when he was bout 2 months old and now and the tooth is brown and very worn down.. I am not sure when my 7 week old will start teething hopefully she will start when my first daughter did.. 5 months old...

I work for a dentist and it is completely normal for teeth to start erupting from newborn-12mos. Anytime in that range is within normal limits. You just have an "earlybird"!
Hylands makes those herbal teething pills that disolve under their tongue, you might try those.
As for the biting, good luck! Usually their tongue covers their teeth while they nurse so hopefully it wont be a problem.

Hi C.,

It's possible that your baby girl is getting a tooth that early, but I'd say it's unlikely. If it's a white area, could she have thrush mouth (makes white spots and is uncomfortable for baby) - if perchance she does, you can also get it on your nipples (not fun)... it's just a yeast overgrowth and easily cured in most cases. If it's not this, and ends up not being a tooth...I'm stumped. My thought would be to check with your pediatrician and express your concerns about what's going on. They can probably confirm whether or not it's an actual tooth and can better advise you as to what to do, whether it is or isn't.

Good luck - and kudos to you for breastfeeding! Great mothering! I'd also encourage you to keep it up as long as possible - kids continue to derive great benefits from human mama's milk as long as they take it in, even once they are eating regular food, and will happily nurse into toddlerhood in most cases if not hindered from it. My daughter is 28 months and still nurses in the morning, at naptime and bedtime and occasionally if she needs comfort or wants a quick drink/snack. She is bright, curious, a good eater of healthy foods, and I'm so happy our nursing relationship is continuing (we did make it through teething, and you can too, whether it's now or several months down the road).

Again, best of luck to you!

It's possible. My kids both got their teeth at 4 months and I know that sooner is not unheard of. It's not bad, but dentist prefer it if your child gets their teeth later in life - prolongs the life of the tooth. But, hey, you can't shove it back in.

As for breastfeeding, I've heard of two major deterrants:
* pop them off as soon as they start to bite
* press their face into your breast, not to suffocate, but to show them that biting produces an unpleasant reaction

I've found that both my boys bit (or lightly pressed with teeth) when they weren't too hungry and were just kind of fooling around. If they seriously wanted milk, they didn't let a thing like teeth get in the way. So, I just popped them off when they decided to use me as their chew toy.

Good luck!

My sister had teeth at 2 weeks old, so yes it is possible that this could be a tooth. You can still continue to breastfeed if your baby has teeth just be carful when your baby is latching on and when you remove her. I used to put my finger in my sons mouth just to make sure that he didn't clamp on to me. It should not be painful at all for you to continue to feed your baby. Her toungue should cover the tooth while she feeds anyway so it won't hurt you. Don't give up nursing over a tooth. That's just a minor challege. Good Luck!

Hi C.. Dont be too alarmed about seeing your kids having teeth so soon in their mouth.I knew a mother who had her son being born with a tooth already sticking out of his gum. And she had the hardest time in breasting feeding her son.But she got around it.The kid is now in his 20's and he has perfect teeth. So you have a good time with your kid. DOnt bother about it too much. Both my kids were premature babies. And the oldest one did not talk or have teeth for a very long time. So every baby is different. SO dont be bother too much.

It is not unheard of for children to teeth young. I have afriend with Native American children who all teethed around 6 weeks. It is rare with breastfed babies butnot unheard of. As for biting. Yes she may bite you, but my son only did this when he was getting a tooth because he needed something to chew on. When babies are latched on their tongue covers those bottom teeth, so if she bites you she's not eating and you can remove her from the breast. When the top teeth come in it can be uncomfortable but to tell you the truth I never eally noticed unless my son was trying to bite. When she is actualy nursing it won't hurt. My son had most of his teeth before I weaned him and I had no problem. Teeth are no reason to deny the breast because kids aren't biteing when they eat. Good luck. ~V

Yep, it happens! My son had his first two teeth within the first 8 weeks of his life. Some kids just get them early. She may bite at first, but just tell her, "No, don't bite, that hurts mommy," and put her down for a minute. After awhile she'll get the message. Good luck! - L.

I have heard of a newborn cutting teeth before. My mother swears that my brother had teeth when he was born. The bit of advice I have to offer is to first, not worry about the bite until it happens. Chances are the baby will not bite while actively nursing because of the way that a child curls their tongue arount the nipple. When my children started to try biting it was after their firsts birthdays, and even then it was while using my nipple as a pacifier not while drinking.

You might want to avoid any bite, and prepare for it by pumping and getting the baby used to a bottle and an artificial nipple.

I wish you the best.

My daughter was born January 2nd,2007. She already has 2 teeth coming in. You can see the nubs and the skin looks like it could break any day now. It's normal. I didn't breast feed after my kids got their teeth in but I do have a friend that did. She said that it doesn't hurt all the time. Just once in a while she gets bit. For her teething you can also use a cold wash rag but it in her mouth and rub her gums with it it will soothe them. She is really young so I wouldn't give her a teether because you'll probably have to hold it in her mouth.her binky might also soothe her. where she can suckle on it she may be able to bite on it too. Just a few suggestions. Good luck!

Some babies are born with teeth! It's rare, but it can happen. My son started the teething process at 3 months (although it took a while for it to actually poke through). I love the "Hyland's" brand homeopathic teething tablets (sold in grocery stores, drug stores, etc). They work like a charm! As far as breast feeding, my daughter did bite me a little, but I would push on her cheek until she stopped. It didn't hurt her, but I'm sure it wasn't comfortable. It only took a few times before she quit doing it. Good luck!
PS- You didn't say what area you live in...I'm in northern San Diego county and am also looking for other moms to spend adult time with.
