7 Month Old Soaking Through Diaper and Pj's Overnight- Everynight!

My 7 month old son is 20 lbs. He sleeps great through the night but for the past 7 days he has been soaking thouh his diaper and clothes. I put him to bed on his back and he immediately flips to his side and then belly. All night he is on his belly, and in the AM, he wakes and begins to mildly groan. I pick him up and he is soaked from the waist to his neck! I change him right before bed, even use the size 4 "overnights" by Luvs that have an extra absorbent middle lining....is there anything else I can be doing? He is getting a bit of a rash now on his belly- likely from laying in pee all night! Help?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses to what to do when my son soaks through his diaper and PJs at night. I tried the overnights, not much different than what we had. But I bought these Diaper Doublers from Dominicks. They look like big maxi pads that you use in the diaper. Works great!!!! Thanks Moms.

I have never used the Luvs brand, but my son wears Huggies overnight diapers, and he has never leaked through.

You've gotten a lot of great advice. My son went through phases where his diaper leaked a lot more than usual.

One thing I did find that worked better was a Bum Genius cloth diaper with both inserts in. He's almost never leaked with the Bum Genius on.

Hi -

My little man did the same thing and we found that huggie's nighttime diaper was the best. It's amazing how much that daiper can hold!!! I also bought one size larger then he needed for just a little extra.

Good luck!

Switch to Pampers Cruisers for night time. I use Luvs during the day for my son and a Pampers at night and it works like a charm!

Hey L., What time is it that you stop given him food or liquids? That might be the problem, More liquids and food given after 7:30pm, increase bowel movement's at night and heavier urine flow. So cut off time for any thing to eat or drink will be like at 7:30.

Quietly go in his room during the night and change him. If he's that good of a sleeper you should be able to do this without waking him. Don't talk to him or don't turn lights on. If he sleeps with a night lite or a light in the hall outside his room can be on with the bedroom door slightly ajar so you can see. Change him, kiss him and ut him right on his tummy if that's what he likes. If this doesn't work, line his diaper with a sanitary pad. Good luck

we had the same issue with our 13 month old who is 20 lbs also...we use a Huggies Overnight 1 size larger than her normal diaper so it has more material to absorb...

My friend tried out all the overnight diapers on her daughter and reco'd the Huggies Overnights to us. So, that was the only one we tried once our son started leaking and they have worked like a charm!

I am still expecting, so I don't have personal experience...but I have read on mamasource before that people have recommended putting an extra absorbent maxi pad in the diaper. Just be sure never to tell your son that he wore maxi pads as a baby ; )

L.- It looks like you've gotten some great suggestions. My son is 21 months old and we had the same problem for quite a while. We found that 2 things worked for us.

First, we put a pair of cotton training pants on over the Huggies Overnight diaper. I found them at Target, made by Gerber. Make sure you buy a size larger than you think you might need to accomidate for the extra space of the overnight diaper. When my son would leak through the overnight, the cotton training pants soaked it right up and (most nights) kept it from soaking his PJs.

Second, we found that we had to limit his nighttime milk by a just a little. Even reducing the amount of that last bottle at night by 1 ounce might make a difference. It's worth a try!

Good Luck!

When this happened to my boys, it was time to move to the next size of diaper. Pampers cruisers always worked for me. Even if they seem a little too big, I would fold it over on the top before I would secure it. Good Luck!

My daughter has always been a tummy sleeper...here is what I do. Pampers Baby Dry (or any brand diaper), and then a Huggies Overnite diaper (one size larger than the regular diaper) over that. Pull the overnight diaper up high in front. I also put on a good amount of Bag Balm to help with the redness from sleeping in pee all night. Works like a charm. Absolutely no wetting through the diapers. I can only find the Huggies Overnites at Toys R Us or Babies R Us. Once in awhile I see them at Target.

L.,

I've always used Pampers Cruisers and/or Pampers Baby Dry for both of my boys and haven't had any leaking problems. I haven't had to double with them... the Pampers seem to do the trick. Also, I did go up to the bigger size earlier than the weight says you should and that definitely helped.
Good Luck!

Hi,

He could be growing and teething (sound wierd)...teething and growth spirts do the wierdest things. I would try a different diaper. Do you have a boy or girl? Huggies seemed to work well for my daughters and my friends who had females. I had the same issue you did with Pampers and my friends that had boys did well with Pampers. Now, I use Target brand:).

I know how you feel! My daughter had the same problems and on very rare occasions, she'll still leak through her diaper and pj's onto her sheets. BUT, I still swear by Huggies Night Time diapers. I do check her diaper right before I go to bed and if it's full, I will change her (she doesn't wake up, luckily). I put her in the Night Times for naps too. Hope this helps! Good luck! P.S. Join the Huggies website and they'll send you tons of GOOD coupons!

I read somewhere if you take a maximum absorbancy pad and stick to the top inside of the diaper that is supposed to help. Just a thought.

You have already received so many wonderful suggesions, but I would also try going up a size in the diapers. Even though he is within the weight limits for size 4 diapers, the size 5 diapers will be able to absorb more since they are larger. When my daughter weighed 19 1/2 pounds, I had to start using size 5 diapers at night b/c she was soaking through each night with the size 4. I haven't had any problems since I started using a larger diaper at night. (she still wears size 4 during the day). Good luck!

Another reco for Huggies Overnight. My friend also suggested putting a women's sanitary napkin in the diaper for extra absorbency.

I had the same issue. Double diapering did the trick. (I also tried going a size bigger and sampled all the overnight diapers.) The only thing that worked was using a larger size over the diaper. Good luck!

I use the Huggie's Overnights and my girl does pee through them sometimes too. The pee on her p.j.'s wakes her up in the middle of the night so I check her before I go to bed and change her if need be. I quick and quiet and that seems to have resolved the issue.

I would say start changing him in the middle of the night or right before you go to bed (since most moms stay up much later) Keep the lights off or as dim as possible (maybe change by night light) so he doesn't wake up or if he does it's only slightly and he will go right back to sleep. Then you and baby will be much happier in the AM. Have all stuff ready for a quick change (you will get better with time). Make sure to use a warm wipe or rag again to not wake him up. And if you used diaper cream for regular bed time change you don't have to reapply now, some should still be on even after you wipe down.

I agree with Nicole or you can also fold a cloth diaper and use it like as a liner for extra absorbency. It is cheaper than having to use 2 disposable diapers. I actually made my own liner by taking some cloth diapers, cutting them in 1/2 folding the diaper then stitching around the edges, so it fit nicely in my sons diaper. the only thing is you have to make a few of them unless you wash a white load every day. Worked great for me.

I have always had good luck with Pampers. Either Baby Dry or Cruisers. Whenever I did Huggies, they leaked through. I have tried Luvs and they didn't leak, but I don't think they are absorbent as Pampers are.

I've found that the Huggies Overnights are the best. My 15mo old was having the same problem. So I bought the Huggies Overnights in a size bigger than he normally wears - tuck the pee pee down and fasten a bit tighter. It seems to be working well for us. Boys always seem to have peeing issues. Good Luck!!

I had the same problem when my son was 7 months (he's now 9 months). We started double diapering him- I used a Pampers size 4 and then put a Pamper size 5 over that. It worked great!

Good luck!
