7 Month Old Really HATES Grains - Help!!!

I have a 7 month old son - we started on rice cereal and oatmeal - no problems. We added veggies and fruits (he loved them all). Now we are going from 1 evening meal to adding a morning one - the catch - he won't eat the cereals even with fruit mixed in. I am lucky to get a teaspoon down him in 20 minutes. I try offering cereal in the evening too with the same result. Any experienced moms know another method to try? I am breastfeeding him first thing and then offering cereal about 2 hours later.

What can I do next?

My first son (breastfed also) never liked the cereal you mixed from the box. I mixed it with breast milk and even tired water but he would never really eat it. The only way he ever ate cereal was the kind that's already mixed in with something else. The kind you buy in the baby food jars that you don't have to do anything to. It was usually rice and applesauce or some other kind of fruit. He never gave me any problems with it when it was like that! Good luck! Mine's 3 yrs. old and is still a finicky eater!

I would not stress about this. He is still getting breast milk, which is the real nutrition. The rest is just experimentation. So, feed him what he likes, and celebrate this time when he will eat his veggies happily!

Maybe not give him cereal and use more fruits an veggies? He could allergic to the grains, and is trying to tell you that he doesn't feel well on them...or...have you ever tried those cereals? They taste awful.
At 7 months, you can give him a variety of veggies and fruits, all of which have fiber and carbs such as the cereal.
Just a thought....

Have you tried giving it to him in a bottle with a large hole in the nipple? It sure worked for me...

If he is eating fruits and veggies, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Every child is different and so is everyday! You will have your share of the picky eater, he just may be starting early! My son is 1 and still loves his cereal and fruit. I just give it to him in the morning after he has 4oz of milk. Earth's Best has whole grain baby foods and my son loved those. I puree a lot at home as well using wheat pasta and brown rice mixed in with fruit and veggies. It is hit or miss. One day he likes something, the next day he doesn't. We like variety in our diets and I bet our kids do too!

I wouldn't push the grains if I were you. Often times kids (babies) won't eat things, because they are allergic to them. (They know) My son is allergic to ALL grains and is doing just fine without them. When we started feeding him a grain free diet, we had to go to a nutritionalist, to make sure he was getting proper nutrition. They came to the conclusion that he was getting better nutrition than kids on a normal, grain diet get. One thing to try if you really want to feed your son cereal is "Cream of Buckwheat" (Buckwheat is not a grain) You can buy it at Sprouts. It is in a yellow box,and is made by Pocono. Your baby does not need grains to grow into a healthy boy!!! For more help, if you are interested... I have a cookbook that has been published... It is called "The Truly Grain Free Cookbook: Beet and Cane Sugar Free too" Written By: J. Marie Powers. You can order it directly, online from the pulisher.... www.publishamerica.com

All good advice!
My 8 mo old baby girl has a nutritionist & GI Dr because of a condition she was born w/ & they both said grains are not needed as long as she is breastfed & has veges in her diet. She may come around later so dont give up, but dont worry about it either.
Enjoy your son & congrats on your new biz! I started a home based business 3 yrs ago w/ Arbonne so I can stay at home w/ my girl & I LOVE it!

My oldest daughter would never eat cereal. She clamped her mouth shut after the first few bites. She ate all the veggies, but none of the grains. At our pediatrician's OK, we gave up with cereal and just stuck with the veggies and eventually added beans, whole wheat toast and other vitamin-rich food. She is now a very healthy four-year old who loves asparagus, brocolli, peppers, etc. To this day she still won't eat cereal, even the sugary stuff. So, don't stress about the cereal too much.

I'd say don't worry about the grains..... the frutis & veggies are so important that if he eats those just keep w/ that. I didn't do grains w/ my 3rd child & she was fine... from your breastmilk & fruits & veggies, you son will do great. :)

I gave the solids first, then followed it with milk at meal times, that way the solids hit the tummy first. Then for snacks I breastfed 100%. Sounds to me like he may be too full to eat the solids. The grains are really just a filler too, so I wouldn't worry if he isn't eating them. Lastly, you can always try to make your own rice cereal and oatmeal for him, it does taste a lot better. Just cook them as you normally would, then blend them to the desired consistency adding milk, juice or water to liquify them more. You could also drop in some banana or fruit. If you make too much, just freeze the leftovers in icecube trays covered with tinfoil. Once they freeze...ziplock bag them till you need em.

Dont push it. He's only 7 months old. Wait and see if he likes cheerios when he's ready for finger foods and feeding himself. If he doesn't, it could be that his body knows it bothers him.

I think overdoing anything sometimes can cause allergies. Let him take it at his pace. Encourage him to eat a variety of foods but dont force any one of them on him, especially at his young age.

My husband & son both hate milk. I was not a big milk drinker growin up. My husband's stomach is bothered by milk (not dairy products, just liquid milk) so I never pushed it with my son, just made sure he had enough calcium & Vit D with yogurt, cheese, etc. To this day he loves yogurt and is now willing to drink choc or strawberry milk as well. I think it is because I have never pushed it on him, just allowed his body to choose the form of the nutrient he needed and hopefully he will never develop the stomach problems that my husband has when drinking milk. (But if he does, well lactose tablets help him just fine)

there really is no nutritional value in cereal - all those vitamins are sprayed on afterwards because it is so devoid of them. your son is smart and senses this.

a great book is dr. fuhrman's "disease proof your kids" (though i think he uses way too much soy which is also very processed) and the china project.

Dont Panic D.. Babies are not as complicated as they seem. He just doesn't like tasteless mushy baby cereal.
I never thought much of it either. Does he have any teeth. There are several GM cereals that are approved.
Cinammon Toast Crunch. Or Cinammon Life especially.
They taste good but they get soft in milk fast. Is he a big boy does he sit up in the high chair. All babies are different. Maybe have yummy baby cookies that are whole grain. If he is eating everything else and just doesn't like the taste of cereal. Dont worry. Just try to find it in other ways. Have fun.

I really don't see a reason for your son to eat grains at all right now. Between breastmilk, fruits and vegetables, he is not missing a thing. Grains have less nutrition and fiber per bite than the other things that he is eating.

Grain based diets only started for human beings with the advent of agriculture (and all its benefits and problems) about 10,000 years ago. Grains are not a critical part of human nutrition per se. Especially with all the variety of fruits and vegetables and proteins available to us in the developed world.
I would not worry if your child never ate grains ever again. The fiber of whole grains contains vitamin blocking substances too. catch 22. More of the trumpeted fiber in diet equals less vitamin absorbtion. Sprouted grains do not have this issue.
You can keep offering grain products...he may enjoy them later.

Hi, he may not be hungry if it has only been two hours. You could try waiting a little longer. My first would only eat the cereals mixed with juice. My second would eat anything and everything. Now my third really like the cereal mixed with formula. She is solely nursed and has never had formula in a bottle - but really likes it in her cereal. You never know. Good luck and try not to worry. They seem to get what they need somehow. P.S. - you could ask your doctor about a vitamin supplement. I gave my first (the picky one) the vitamin in his juice. He never seemed to notice. Good Luck! -M.

Try diluting the rice or oat cereal with some water first to get it thin consistency. Then add the pureed fruit/veg and or yogurt to the cereal. That really helped for my baby to eat it and enjoy it.

Maybe try waiting a little longer after breastfeeding to feed him solids. Plus he could also be teething and rejecting it.
