7 Month Old Not Sitting up or Crawling. Should He Be?

I just wanted to tell you that my son didn't sit up until he was 8 months old and he didn't start crawling until 2 days past his 1st birthday. I wouldn't worry about it at this point. Now mine is running around like crazy and very active.

I wish any of mine had been that slow!!

Seriously, I would take advantage of free evaluation. What do you have to lose? You either find out that he is a lazy boy or that there are problems you need to address sooner, rather than later.

I wouldn't be too worried about it! I have 4 boys, and all of them reached their "milestones" at completely different times/ages. For example, my 9 mo old began sitting up about a month ago (going from tummy to sitting up on his own accord) and he just started crawling last week. On the otherhand, my now 4 year old was walking and even running around by 10 months! So, no worries!

My daughter wouldn't sit up alone until 7.5 months. I got a Bumbo from a friend and after sitting in that for a week or so, so was sitting fine. Try a Bumbo seat, maybe he just needs to know what it feels like to sit unassisted. That's all it took for mine to figure it out. Shortly after that she figured out how to crawl, although at 8.5 months she's still not a smooth crawler, for some reason she tries to put her feet under her. I've never seen a baby crawl like she does, but I'm not worried. Don't worry about your baby, babies take their own time, fast or slow, so don't worry.

No, I think he's fine. My oldest and youngest daughters were more like 8 months before they were sitting, and more like 10-11 months for crawling. My middle daughter was a bit more precoscious (something like 6 and 9 months for those milestones, and walking at 11 months)!

Your son is well within the averages for these milestones.

Wood floors are slippery so put something more stable under him, maybe a slip proof rug or something....that very well may be part of it.

i would totally not be concerned at this point. if you get to 8.5 months and still not sitting, then i'd look into having him evaluated. there are a LOT of kids that NEVER crawl, that is not a developmental milestone, so i wouldn't worry about the crawling. give him a few more weeks, good luck!

You have been good advice so far; every child develops differently that is very true; at the same time it would be helpful to get some help to help him along and isolate whether there are any issues. While I wouldn't necessarily be concerned about the crawling I would be about the sitting up issue. IPT in Dallas is phenomenal at doing evaluations (and they have a great team that does OT/PT ###-###-####

I am a former early intervention specialist. The is some variance on when each child will do certain things, but your son may be a little delayed. It would be a good idea to have him evaluated by the early childhood intervention program in your area. Services are free for children under 3 years old.
