6.5 Month Old and Feeding

I started my daughter on solids first week of June. She enjoyed eating and would eat at 6pm about an oz of food. I tried carrots, sweet potatoes and avocado. She liked sweet potatoes and avocado but not carrots to much. Fine no problem by me. She loved her avocados though and would eat 2oz of those. She went on for about two weeks eating every night. Then suddenly she has stopped. She now sticks out her tongue and gags, the food isn't even towards the back of her mouth I was thinking maybe a sensitive gag reflex. The food is at tip of tongue when she does this. She now refuses to eat anything. I am kind of at a lost. I know kids can be back and forth on things but I just wonder if anyone else's kid(s) have done this. Oh and she is 20lbs at 6month old and is breastfed. The doctor says shes perfectly healthy at last check up.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have kind of out smarted her in a way. Since we have a bunch of fresh fruit around I put some banana in a net thing. She loves it but if I mash it and try and give it she says no way! Thanks for everyone's input on this. I don't understand what people mean by don't feed her so much, so many things and even the doctor said start with a oz. The only thing she ever ate a full oz on was the avocado.

Stop feeding her so much food. Her taste buds seemed to have just changed a bit maybe. She will start eating again soon but she is still young enough that breastmilk is all she really needs.

Hi R.,

I think you may be hard-pressed to find someone whose kids DIDN'T do this. It's perfectly normal. Just stop solids all together for a couple days and then try again.

Remember that for the 1st year their primary nutrition should be breast or bottle. Even if she's eating other foods, the breast or bottle should be given FIRST.

The baby food is just practice - they don't get much actual nutrition from it anyway. And - she will learn pretty quick that this is a great way to stress out mommy and get her all concerned, so be as blase about it as you can.

This sounds fairly normal. Just keep introducing new foods and offering them to her. It could be the texture, the taste, maybe she had one bad bite so now she doesn't want to try. But she will eventually.

Here is a guide on what to offer and how much:

I breast fed my four children and they all did the same thing when they were growing. They eat a lot for a few weeks then all the sudden food isnt that important for awhile. Unless your baby isnt having the usual numbers of diapers, isn't growing, and isn't having the normal number of diapers a day he is probably just going thru a growth spurt.

My 7 month old absolutely REFUSES to eat mushy food - she just sits with it on her tongue! haha So, I started giving her food with texture, stuff she has to chew: puffed wheat and rice, pieces of apples, bananas, cooked sweet potatoe and carrots, avacado. And she LOVES it! She's master the pincher grip and can feed herself. She still gets 95% of her nutrition from breastmilk, but is actually *enjoying* eating now, instead of gagging and spitting it out. It's worth a try, just keep a VERY close eye on her!!

GO SLOWLY on the solids. We introduced solids VERY carefully, as in 1 solid meal twice a week, and then nothing. And then every 2 days, and so on. Also, introduced only one type of food at a time. Wait at least 3 days before trying a new one.

Also make the food almost liquid at first. That's why rice cereal is ideal. You can give it the feel of milk so baby can't tell it's solid at first. Mix the rice cereal with breast milk or sterilized water. Then very slowly add more cereal as she gets the hang of it.

Try reintroducing solids that way. She won't be able to tell the difference from milk that way.

Do not feed her that much in one meal. And don't worry about going back and forth between eating solids. It happens.
