My 6 year old has been vomitting and having diarehia for the past 24 hours, not able to keep anything down. lost 3 lbs, 5% of his weight, verge of dehydration.f5
So i took him to peditrician, he said he has rotavirus. Gave anit naseua med and sent us home. with instructions that if he not able to keep down liquids to take him to ER for IV fluids.

So now 3 hours later he is drinking and eating..........but Im worried whats going to happen when anti naseau med wears off? Are we going to go through the whole cycle again? I did not think to ask pediticain, more worried about him not keeping stuff down.

What can I do next?

Our 4 year old daughter was hospitalized for 3 days with Rota Virus and the dehydration that came with it. Our Pedi gave her similar meds, told us to give her small sips of liquid and sent her home. That evening she was lifeless so I took her to the ER and they addmitted her. When she left - she had lost 12% of her body weight. Rota is an aggressive virus, take him to the ER quickly if you see him start to get worse! I hope he feels better!

Call the doctor's office this morning and ask 'What if?" In the mean time, keep re-hydrating him. Keep him comfortable, watch his temp. Start cleaning, wiping all your surfaces down with bleach water (small amount of bleach to a gallon of water) and strip the beds, wipe his mattress down with the bleach water. This is the infamous cruise ship bug. Watch for signs of the bug in other members of your family. I wish you all well.

My daughter had Rotavirus when she was one. She had severe vomiting for 24 hours. With her last vomit came her first diarrhea. The diarrhea lasted for 8 days. She lost a lot of weight and we struggled to keep her hydrated.

My friend is a pediatrician and we called her to discuss because we were worried SICK. She said that the pattern she was showing was very typical and not to worry as long as she was getting some fluids and had a couple of we diapers.

Now that your son is eating and drinking, you are probably in the clear for vomiting, but he will likely have diarrhea for several more days. However, eating regular foods will help his system get back to normal quickly.

My son had it when he was 5. We did end up going to the ER due to dehydration. I noticed someone else mentioned that they used Gatorade. Double check with your doctor if you plan on giving him any. I have asked different doctors about sports drinks and even Sprite and they have all recommended not using them because of the sugar. It will make the diarrhea worse.

Hope the little guy recovers soon, it's a nasty virus.

I had this a week ago and was in the ER. I have never had anything this bad and I was throwing up so much. The doc also gave me anti naseau meds and I didn't throw up anymore. I did have diarrhea for a couple of days after. The doc said to do BRAT, bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. Hope he feels better. I hate when my kids are sick.

This has been going around all over the place! I'm 7 months pregnant and just had a bad case of this for five days (lost 7 pounds!). My doctor had me take Imodium for a day and I was on a liquid diet (3 to 4 sips of Gatorade every 10 minutes) for 24 hours. After that day I was on the BRAT diet for a day and a half (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast). I'm still not 100%, but the vomiting and diarrhea stopped that first day.

I'd try to stick to the BRAT diet for a couple of days to give his system so time to recover.
Good Luck :)

2 of my 3 kids had rotavirus last winter , they were 5 & 7 months at the time. The first 24-36 hrs are the worst for the vomiting/diarrhea and then after that it becomes less frequent over 2 days or so. As your son has had it for 24 hrs already he should be almost over the worst of it so you may be lucky & not have to take him in. You are looking at a good 7-10 days though before he is back to himself completely , it really knocks them for six.

CDC says it can last for 3-8 days. My son had it or something like it for 9 days when he was a baby. It was awful. I've never had a ped prescribe antinausea meds. They need to get the virus out, as horrible as it is at the time. Keep a close eye on him and watch for signs of dehydration. Otherwise, not much you can do.
