6 Year Old Snapping His Own Jeans

My 6 year old doesn't yet have the finger strength to snap his jeans all the time (he can occasionally, but most of the time, he just wanders around with his pants unbuttoned). Is this normal at this age?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Haha, he's 6...thanks for catching that Silver Spring...I need more sleep.

Patty K., he is coming come from school with his pants unbuttoned every day (he's in kindergarten). I wish he could wear more than sweatpants, but I guess that's what it will have to be.

Is he 8 or 6?

I often get my DD jeans with the adjustable waist and she can pull them off without unsnapping if necessary.

Some are easier to snap than others. My son had a much easier time with Children's Place brand than with one of the Target brands.

My almost 7 yr old grandson also has problems with this..... finger strength just isn't there for some of those snaps......

When we notice, we snap them for him...... he rarely asks for help with it, just goes around with his pants unbuttoned....

It was normal at our house.
Some of those snaps are really tough!

Arizona brand had a slip in metal hook instead of the click snaps. It was easy for him to slide the metal in the metal so those were the kind of pants he would wear. Now he doesn't wear any jeans and its all athletic pants or shorts. My daughter is so darn thin that she is able to just pull all her pants up and down without unbuttoning her jeans. If he does like wearing jeans I would look for the hook type of button.

Some snaps are hard. Instead of letting him walk around like that, snap them for him

I think it's pretty typical. What about a belt and he can fasten the belt without snapping the pants?

Yes, that's why designers make all those jeans and pants with elastic waists for this age group.

Thanks for posting this question. Just had to buy fleece sweats for my 4 year old because he was complaining that jeans are too difficult. I guess it might be some time till he can better manage.

Yep - it's pretty normal.
I kept our son in pull on jeans with an elastic waist for a long time.
