6 Weeks and Wondering Why They Couldn't Locate Baby in 2Nd Vaginal U/s

I am having some mild spotting problems which started up at the end of week 4. It did stop after a few days, but yesterday night started up again. So doctor had me come in today for a transvaginal u/s. Last week, when I was just entering week 5 the nurse located the baby (well the sac) no problem and it looked like it should. A week later with the same nurse, she couldn't see the baby this time. I'm not having heavy bleeding at all. With my last pregnancy I had much more than the light spotting I'm having currently.

I was sent to have a blood draw today and to go again on Friday with the hope that the levels double. I still have bad morning sickness, and other pregnancy symptoms.

I guess I just want to know that others have gone through this problem. I mean, I accept that there is very little that can be done if I have miscarried. I've always had a fairly regular cycle and was starting to do a more detailed job of tracking after having 3 post b/c cycles. Since I had only two cycles written down I wasn't ready to start figuring out when I would ovulate, so it is possible I'm less along than originally thought with my LMP 12/10/07.

I do have another draw on Friday and another ultrasound scheduled for next week. My doctor was hopeful since I still am having strong pregnancy symptoms with very terrible morning sickness. I'm even having my hips rapidly spread which is happening at an accelerated rate compared to my first.

Has anyone else has anything like this happen with them? I went in hoping that maybe we could see a heartbeat to worrying that I may have miscarried. Help? I want to know good or bad, so I can be realistic in what my chances are of having a successful and healthy pregnancy.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My levels were HcG: 633 and Progesterone 6.7 on 01/23/08. I got the results from 01/25/08 and my HcG level went up to 1367. Since my progesterone levels are still low the doctor put me on a Progesterone replacement to help boost the levels. I have another ultrasound on 01/31/08 so we should be able to see something then.

I had a miscarriage where I lost the baby, but my body still thought I was pregnant for 6 weeks after that. My doctor told me it is a common type of miscarriage, and I know others who have had the same thing. The ultrasound confirmed that there was no baby and that I had lost the baby up to 6 weeks prior. I had terrible morning sickness the whole time and I had to switch to maternity clothes. It is very strange to me, but my doctor said it is a type of miscarriage where my body still thought I was pregnant so the uterus was still growing, etc. So, I am not trying to upset you, as I know this is extremely painful time and a miscarriage is awful. But, you may still be ok, I am not a doctor. *Hugs*

Hi A.,

It could be that your U/S tech was just having a bad day locating the fetus. When she couldn't locate the sac again she should have called the doctor in to do it for her. That is usually what we did in my office. There should be usually a heart beat by 6 1/2 weeks. They should have you come in next time with a full bladder and do another trans vaginal ultrasound sooner. I myself have never made a patient wait a week after finding out they couldn't locate an image. That will only drive you mad.

I imagine they ran a Progesterone level to determining the thickness of your lining and a Beta HCG level which determines if your levels are raising or dropping. Which will determine a miscarriage or not. Though you are looking for some comfort from people that have gone through it. No two woman's pregnancies are alike. I have seen many amazing cases and women who have beaten the odds. So the only thing that will be the most accurate is those blood tests and your ultrasound. Just hold tight and be persistent with those doctors.

Keep us posted as to what happens. I am crossing my fingers for you.

I recently had a misscarriage so when I got pregnant again I was monitered and poked A LOT. At 8 weeks with this pregnancy, they did an ultrasound and you couldn't SEE the baby, just the sac, but we could hear the heartbeat. The Ultrasound tech said that the heart had just started beating. Maybe your baby doesn't have a heart beat yet.

Six weeks is very early to see anything. I wouldn't lose hope until you have another appointment. It's likely that it was just too early to see the heartbeat. It starts in the sixth week so if your dates are even a little off then that would explain it.

I would say to keep your chin up until about the 7th week, when they know they should see a heartbeat. Its always probable that your not as far along as you think and that could be the case. They may tell you to wait longer if you don't have any cramps or heavy bleeding just because of that chance that your not that far yet.

A.,
I can totally relate to what you are saying. The only difference is, with my last pregnancy, It started at about 5 weeks with the bleeding and just a little at first. I just went in had my levels checked and they were rising. Then a week later, I was gushing blood, so we prepared for that I might be losing him. well, he is almost 5 now. They sent me to have my levels a couple more times and they just kept going up and up. It was my third and lsat baby too. And, I was so scared. I did have minor bleeding for about 4 mths usually during my period time after that gushes of alot of blood and then it stopped. Good luck and keep us informed ok?

I have miscarried eight times, so am very experienced in situations like these.

Yes, this did happen to me with one pregnancy. I had all the pregnancy symptoms and even my hcg levels were high as if I were pregnant, but there was no baby in the sac. It usually happened to me around week 6.

My doctor took blood every week, and after about two months my hcg levels were down and the symptoms were gone, so we could try to get pregnant again, and we did successfully.

Doc said this happens when the egg doesn't fully attach to the uterine wall.

I wish I had better news for you, but know you're not alone, your experience is normal, and I hope you feel better soon.
