My son's doctor told me that hives are common in young children and not necessarily anything to worry about. They can appear whenever they get exposed to a small irritant or allergen. They may even go away and come back a couple of times over the next few days.

Was she playing outside or sitting on a riding toy like the previous poster suggested? That is quite possibly the cause.

I wouldn't worry too much at this point. Hopefully they won't come back!

This happened to my son when he was about 7 mos. old. He was getting hives on his face every morning. The first time it happened on a weekend and they said it could be viral and to use Benadryl if it got worse. It kept happening every day then would go away within the hour. Finally, I took him back to the pediatrician and they did allergy testing. The tests showed that he was severely allergic to dairy, eggs and nuts. I was breastfeeding at the time and those proteins all go through breast milk. I also noticed that after I ate some peanuts then played with him, he broke out into hives. You may want to ask for allergy testing. My son also has eczema on his skin. Hope this is helpful. Btw, my son is now 1 year old and has been on Zyrtec and Benadryl.

I broke out in hives and I found out it was due to anxiety.

My daughter, who is now 10, still gets them. When she was 4 or 5-ish I took her to the doctor. Her back was solid red welps. She looked like she had been beaten with a leather strap. Doctor said he had never seen a case like hers and even took a picture of it. But in just a matter of time it clears up. I use sensitive soap, detergent, Aveeno, etc. Benadryl is the only solution as far as I know. And no worrying. It isn't something she ate or got into- it's just their precious little skin. Now at age 10 he sees that it is also linked to anxiety that she has. Just say your prayers and baby will be fine:)

Could she have been exposed to something outside that might bother her? Grass, weeds, etc? What about new laundry detergent? Also, what about animals? You said she hasn't eaten anything new, but it usually takes a few ingestions before they show a reaction. Did she eat any foods that are common for allergies? Not sure what it could be, these are just some ideas for you to go off of. Good luck! Hope the hives clear up and stay away!

With the location of the hives, could she have ridden a toy outside that could have had something on the body of it? Just a thought.

Hi C.,
I have a Two and half year old. When he was one he got Hives for the first time and we too had not give him any new foods or changed any routine of soaps est...
His doc told us the "it's just something kids can get/do from time to time and it will go away do not worry about it, give him Benadryl"
Well over that following winter it got worse and he was having them all the time! Especially after Christmas. So I took him back in and his doc was not there that day so we saw another doc. This doc was WAY more helpful and talked to us about every time he had them what he ate. He was convinced it was a food allergy. The one thing in common was Chocolate, Coco to be exact.(he had lots of chocolate in his stocking) Well I told the Doc that there where times when my son had coco but did not break out. And this is what he told me that made ALL the sense in the world and now from motoring my son I know is true: "Not all food allergies are a true allergy but can be an intolerance, for food intolerance show up in different ways and for our son his body can handle the intolerance when he is healthy BUT when his immune system is down; he has been sick with something or when he gets an extra amount of the food; during those times he body struggles with processing the coco and as a result his body fights it with hives.

I wish you the best in finding why she has them and pray for comfort for you both.
Blessings,
J. Miller
