My son is 6 months old and loves eating and tring new foods. He used to eat rice cereal mix with breast milk and could digest it easily. We then mixed it with formula and he wont touch it, or if he did he would get really fussy 3-6 hours later and not sleep at night. It seemed to hurt his stomach. So now we have tried baby food, squash and peas. When he ate these the same thing would happen at night time. So during this time I thought it was the foods I ate (I breastfeed) so I changed my way of eating and still nothing, he was still restless at night. So I tried some formula, that didnt go well, he would not take it at all, so hopefuuly my milk doest dry up. I then took him off everything but breast milk and that night slept all night and has the last week. So I asked the WIC lady and she said to try some fruits, so bannans here we come. Same thing up all night. So my question is why are foods hurting him. My step mom thinks its acid reflex, I go see a doctor the 14th, but just wondering what you thought. Sorry so long but felt I need to explain the situation. Thank you in advance for any help.

What can I do next?

I used Gripe water for my children. They had a lot of issues with gas pain and it helped a lot. While nursing I can't have soda, chocolate or anything dairy. If I did, they'd cry for hours. Mine had problems earlier than six months though...I would see a doc and ask them. Breast milk is way better for your baby than formula as far as gas goes. That's been my experience at least. Maybe you could go back to trying the breast milk/cereal and then slowly start other foods. It's always a good idea to let them have the same food for several days in a row to make sure they're not allergic. I hope this helps and I so feel your pain!

Hi, don't worry, not all babies mature at the same rate. My son spit up after every feeding for the 1st year of his life. Breast milk is always best, but, food is fun. Try soy milk as it is easier on a babies tummy. Maybe just try food in the morning and not at night and only small amounts. It is all trial and error. Above all be patient.

I am a breastfeeder and I tried to give my son solids at 6 months. He cried. He hated solids. I did not force him to eat. Every two weeks I would try again and one day a little before 8 months, he ate an entire jar of sweet potatoes. Now, he is 22 months old and an excellent eater. Don't force him. He may just be too young with his digestive system too immature for solids. At this age, solids are just for practice they do not need solids for nutrition. Breastmilk or formula is fine for the first year.

Well, when we started foods with my daughter we began with Gerber. She would get fussy, even with the cereal, have gas issues, and be an over all miserable little girl. Then we switched to Hipp and Alete baby foods and cereals. No problem ever since. The formula she hates, regardless of what brand. My son had to go through a number of brands and types of formula before we found the right one, which turned out to be Milk-based formula that contained no lactoses, Soy made him sick. If you think it is just a gassy issue or reflux you should, before trying any kind of meds, go natural with some Bauchwohltee, which you can give a baby as young as 1 week old. You can mix it into the cereal, with breast milk, or give it to the baby alone. It worked wonders with my daughter, even worked when I ate brocoli.

We started my daughter and son on baby food and cereal at 4 months old. Also, the German baby foods have less sodium and taste much better, even to adults than the Gerber and other American brands. Lastly, the veggies are mixed in Alete and Hipp foods, sometimes even with meats starting at the 4 month stage. My daughter won't touch veggies by themselves, but loves them when mixed. She is 6 months and in perfect health as of her apt today.

So, to sum it up, you live in Germany... give the Germans a chance and if it still doesn't work, all kids are different. Some don't start eating baby foods until later than others, or bring it up with your Dr. Oh, and Gute Nacht or Schlaf Gut meals seem to be easier on the tummy for my daughter than other meals and they really do help her sleep better.

Good luck!

My Info: My son is 4 yrs old, daughter 6 months old. Both happy and healthy as can be. I am still nursing my daughter. And we have lived in German 3.5 years so far with the Army.

My daughter also had difficulty sleeping when I introduced her to rice cereal mixed with breastmilk at 5 months of age. What helped was giving her rice cereal once in the morning, waiting a few days, then giving it to her in the morning and at noon. I fed her breastmilk only in the evenings until she could tolerate her "breakfast" and "lunch" without any apparent discomfort, which took about a month. Also make sure offer your baby plenty of water in a trainer cup during feeding time as well as throughout the day, as water consumption helps them with digestion. When you introduce other foods be sure to only feed your baby that food for a few days, being careful to note any unusual reactions. Also, If your baby cannot tolerate formula, could you substitute it with water instead?

I had this happen to my baby girl. I spoke with the LLL leader and she told me that I should give her nothing but breast milk for two weeks and then slowly introduce solids back into her diet, one at a time and wait a full TWO weeks in between each new food. Any doctor will tell you that solids at this age are nutritionally unimportant. Your baby gets everything he needs from your breast milk. My baby couldn't tolerate solids until about 9 months. I hope this helps. You can email me if you'd like with any questions.
