5 Year Old with a Pea-sized Lump on Tongue

Hello moms, last week Thursday I noticed a pea-sized lump on the left side of my son's tongue. He told me it doesn't hurt and that he didn't even know it was there until I said something. His primary doctor didn't know what it was and referred us to an ENT. The ENT doctor recommends removing the lump. He told me that he is unsure what it is. It could be 1 of 3 things: a collection of mass on the nerves, a past injury that has resulted in a collection of blood or tissue, or a clogged salivary duct.

My concern is with the surgery. My son will have to be put under to be operated on. Also, I'm concerned with the tongue healing and the potential for a nerve to be damage during the operation. Has anyone experienced this or had a similar experience? How did you handle it and what was the outcome? Anything you'd do differently in hindsight?

What can I do next?

hmm...i had one once when i was 10 or 11, my ENT called it a pollop. He numbed my tongue and scooped it out. it ended up being a bundle of blood vessels that had grown around a small piece of popcorn kernal that had embedded in my tongue. It never hurt and I was fine, but i was never put to sleep. I don't know if its the same thing but I hope it sheds a little light on the subject.

1. Ask more questions until you feel comfortable.
2. As for being put under, when my daughter had surgery (18 months), I had the same concern. While there are risks, the surgeon told me that it was more likely she would be injured during the drive to the hospital than have complications with anesthesia. Also, they may just want to put him under because of his age, and the likelihood that he wouldn't be able to sit still. You may want to ask about that.

Good luck!

This is tough! I have had a clogged salivary duct actually and it's fairly painful, so I'm guessing that's not it! It does seem odd that he'd have to be put under to remove something like this...maybe you should ask if it's possible to just do it with a local, I know I'd be more comfortable with that if it were my child! I agree with asking more questions...find out what would happen if you just left it for a while. Good luck!

Hi, just wondering what happened in the end with your son? Did you go ahead with the surgery and did you find out what had caused it?

I found exactly the same in my 4 year old son yesterday (pea sized lump on left side of tongue) and am taking him doctors this morning. I have never heard of this before and so am curious about your case as it is the only one on the internet I have found which is the same as my sons!

Thanks

The most important thing to be is a voice for your son. Ask dont settle for not sures and we wonder.Someone has the answer. Say this was you, do the same thing with regards to your safety first. Ask, ask, ask. Get a second opinion if need be. Good luck to all.

is it harmful either way? if it isnt going to harm him then i would just ask your son how he feels about it. my daughter has a lump on one of her eye lids. but it isnt harming her. it will probably get bigger, but since it isnt hurting her any i am leaving it up to her when she wants to have it removed, that way i am not terrifying her of a surgery at a young age.
