My 5 year old has a dry, nagging cough. Nothing terrible, more of a constant tickle in her throat. Any suggestions for hot drinks such tea with honey type drinks that you have used with your children?

Thanks

My grandpa used to make a remedy similar to Yvettes - cut up an onion, and a whole lemon. Add a few teaspoons of sugar. Stir, let sit in the fridge for a while. It makes a delicious syrup that soothes the throat.

I have tried all the home remedies. The work for a short time. If you need longer relief try Delysum. It is an over the couter cough med that last 12 hours. Non habit forming and non narcotic. It really works great.

I've heard that Buckwheat Honey is the best for coughs, but any honey will help. I also mix it half and half with lemon juice.

It's kind of along the same route, but I found this homeopathic cough syrup at Whole Foods called Chestal by Boiron. It works REALLY well for my son. It has honey in it and it has really helped us this past week with his cough. They have it in a triple pack right now for about 1/2 off the regular price (with a couple of other kids' homeopathic things for colds and flu. I highly recommend it.

just a small spoonful of honey straight-up helps. it coats the throat. there was actually a pretty good clinical study about it a year or two ago.

My daughter (also 5) has had a nagging cough as well, especially at night. Chamomile tea or Green tea with honey always soothes her cough. The steam and warmth from the tea seems to loosen up her congestion, which will then give her a more "productive" cough versus the dry nagging cough she's had.

Hope your little one feels better :)

Happy Holidays,
Barbara

Honey on a spoon with ginger (the spice) on top. It tastes terrible, but it works. My brother used to get bronchitits a lot and this help coat the throat and something in the ginger helps it to heal.

Good luck

I simmered the heck out of a red onion w/sugar. I had about two teaspoons and felt the relief IMMEDIATELY. It was almost miraculous!

I gave it to my asthmatic son and he's been A-OK for the past two months. I was amazed. It seemed like we were just not getting better. I used Claritin/Zyrtec with no relief. This was a God send for me and my 6 year old.

Take an onion or two, cut it up and add a few spoons of sugar on top. Let it sit until the juice comes out. Let her drink the juice a tablespoon at a time a few times a day. It helps.

I also give my kids garlic with honey. Cut it up, put some honey on a spoon, add a few pieces of garlic to the honey and let them eat it.

Our doctor suggested a teaspoon of honey for kids that age. They also said a humidifier in their room might help.

How long has she had the cough? A friend of mine's son had a cough like you are describing for about a month. She just happened to take him in for his 2 year old well check and the pediatrician said he had a mild form of bronchitis. They gave him an antibiotic and cleared it right up. My friend was mortified! According to her, it was just a mild, dry cough with no other symptoms, and it turned out to be bronchitis. Maybe a trip to the doctor is in order? Good luck!

Hyland's Homepathic cough medicine works very well, it is made with honey and no added or artificial sweeteners or other junk.

Or 1T of water, 1T of lemon and 1tsp of warm honey may also work. Taste like sweet lemonade!
