I got a call at work tonight saying that my 5 year old daughter suddenly woke up from being asleep for a couple of hours, complaining with her hands and legs "feeling funny". Her dad felt of her hands and face and checked her temp, it was 99. He gave her Tylenol and called me at work, by this time it was up to 101. I told him to put a cool wash cloth on her forehead and watch her closly, and I headed home to see her. By the time I got home, her temp was down to 100, and she was back asleep. I didn't want to wake her since she feels bad. No other symptoms so far... no runny nose, no cough, nothing so far. The "funny tingly feeling" she said she was feeling in her hands and legs kind of worried me tho... so I started searching for what it could be. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! ** haven't taken her to the dr yet, only bc it is almost 1AM here, closest ER is almost 45 min away, and I am keeping a very close eye on her and her temp. I was trying to find some sort of help/answer/knowledge tonight... and will have her at the dr office first thing in the morning, in the meantime, I was hoping I could possibly figure out what might be going on with her. Thank yall**

So What Happened?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to yall.... & thank all of you so much for your advice. Around 5 AM this morning she woke up and was crying and nauseated, she threw up just once & only a tiny bit of what looked like water, finally fell back asleep around 630 AM. I kept a close eye on her until she woke up around 10 this morning, while we were getting ready to go see doc, her fever spiked to 103 pretty quickly, she said she felt sick to her stomach and she was very shaky. Gave her motrin, and got on our way to the dr. Her temp was down to 100 by the time we got back to our exam room, he immediately checked for flu, strep, and looked in her ears, throat, ect. All negative. So he said he is thinking something viral & said to keep with the Tylenol and motrin, & keep her hydrated. If she isn't any better by tmrw afternoon, he wants to see her again and do a few more tests. Since we've left the dr, thankfully no more vomiting, but still a little nausea. And every 2-3 hours her temp slowly starts climbing back up. Earlier it stayed at 101 for about 2 hours until it finally broke and she was soaking wet with sweat after that. That was around 9:30-10PM, gave motrin, it is 1AM here now, she is sleeping, I just checked and it is back at 100.3 now. So I'm just trying to keep a close watch on her, and hopefully she will perk up a little by tmrw afternoon. Thank yall again! Let'cha know if anything changes. I really appreciate the support!

I would say her hands and feet were asleep. Maybe she slept in an awkward position. See how she's feeling next time she wakes up.

There are times when, as parents, we want to make everything better for our kids, and we just can't. This is one of those examples.

You did all you could - cool her down, let her sleep. With the 99 fever, no Tylenol was required, but I assume he gave it to her because she was complaining of pain. By the time it got to 101, then yes, that's when you medicate it. Remember that a fever is the sign of the body's immune system kicking in, and that's a good thing.

Tingles and achy joints are very common with flu and virus onset. Same with chills even if there is a fever. I'm sure that's what it is. "Dr. Google" just gives you all the weird alarming signs of horrible, rare diseases, and it's a good way to throw yourself into a panic over nothing. 101 isn't that horrible a fever, all things considered, and not all flu or virus problems include cough or nose issues. I agree with your decision not to take her to the ER. Her symptoms weren't that serious, and the last place you want a tired and sick kid is a busy place full of sick people and busy doctors who can't do anything with such general symptoms.

So you either call your pediatrician's 24 hour number (rather than spend time on the internet), or you wait until the morning and see how she is. Sometimes kids are better after a good night's sleep, and sometimes they are in the full throes of something with more symptoms you can document over a timeline. That's much more helpful info for the pediatrician.

Hope she rallies quickly.

the best thing you can do for her, having made her comfortable and let her fall back to sleep, is to go to bed yourself and get some rest.
internet searches for vague symptoms are pretty much never helpful.

Steer clear of Dr Google, nothing good ever comes from searching symptoms.... Only fear.

You did a good job keeping her comfy, just call the pedi today and check it out.

In the future make sure your husband has the pediatrician's 24 hour nurse line so he can call for advice, rather than calling you and making you both freak out. They have access to your daughter's records and can walk him through the symptoms and make an appointment for the next day if needed.

More than likely it is a virus. Still always take them to the doctor.

Take her to the doctor instead of searching for what it could be. It's really best that you don't try to figure this out on the internet.

have you called your pediatrician yet?

Even if she feeling better today, they can still check her out and see if there is a problem. They can run blood tests too.

Welcome to mamapedia!!

It's scary when our kids say their appendages feel funny and have a fever.

Call her pediatrician and let them know what was going on. Then schedule an appointment. I would say she has a virus. I would venture that the "funny feeling" was a spiked fever - as our bodies move all the blood to our core.
