5 Year Old Daughter Pees and Then Has to Pee Again Right Away

My 5 year old daughter had a UTI about two weeks ago. Was given antibiotics; follow-up showed infection is gone, however she is still peeing more than she used to.

Has anyone ever experienced anything similar to this before? She is not in pain, just says she feels a little tickle and must go to the washroom. I just don't know what to make of this behaviour. We went to the medical clinic again and was told everything was alright (and I also left yet another urine sample which will be send to the lab).

Any advice would be appreciated.

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of your wonderful advice.

My daughter is now taking another round of antibiotics as the infection never did clear up.

I am so concerned - I hope this time it clears up as I do not know how much longer she can take the antibiotics.

Has anyone else experienced a UTI that did not go away and their child has to take additional antbiotics?

I bet she still has the UTI or a new one. Poor thing. I hate those. See if she will drink cranberry juice. I take a cranberry pill as soon as I get that feeling and start drinking cranberry juice but I think she is too young for the pills. Water is also good just have her keep drinking.

My son went through this. SOOO annoying but there was no infection and a sono showed nothing. The urologist said that he may have gotten soap in his urethra which can cause an irritation. He said to make sure he empties his bladder each time by telling him to wait a few seconds after he thinks he has finished just to make sure there isn't any more. No rushing. And he said no more bubble baths or sitting in soapy bath water after bathing. We started giving him showers and the problem cleared up. Then when he did take a bath, we let him play for a while and then pulled him out right after we bathed him. I am pretty sure the urologist said this is more common in girls.

All of what Erica said. Some people might suggest cranberry juice: only UNsweetened cranberry juice should be used. Lay off any carbonation or foods with high sugar content (think beets) and try a probiotic too. Yogurt is great, but often very sweetened, so if your daughter will tolerate some plain yogurt in a blueberry smoothie, so much the better. (Blueberry is also a good food for toning the urinary tract). We did powdered probiotics in a small amount of applesauce.

Hello, I would call her doctor. They might want to do another urine test. She may need another round of antibiotics.
Good luck with your precious little girl.

My daughter had a UTI when little and that did not happen, however, my son, at 6 years old, kept needing to go. Like you said, right after he had just gone. We even had to turn the car around a few times. The teacher talked to me, because he was asking so much in class. We checked him for diabetes (since my mother, the grandmother, was concerned). We checked everything (I actually brought it up at a sick visit for something else, not that I ran specifically for that). There was nothing wrong. He just went if he felt a little something, and I think, even if he did not feel it (or he had not let everything out before he left the bathroom). He is now 7 (today) and he does not do that anymore. If she is not upset about it, let it go and see if it fades. Maybe also check with the dr. by phone to see if that could have anything to do with the UTI.

She may need another round of antibiotics...the infection could still be there. Make sure she's emptying her bladder completely...make her sit for a few more seconds after she initially thinks she's done. Give her yogurt. Avoid sugars and juices.

It could be psychological from when she had a bladder infection, and constantly feeling the need to go. She also might still have some irritation. If it continues for any given length of time, she should be checked again..

I suggest her urethra is still a bit irritated from the infection and this will go away in a week or so.

Urine runs right through me. Every drop, every time I eat or drink. It all seems to come right back out. I go all the time, still need to go, and go again. It's annoying. It's been going on all my life. I've had tests, medicine, and nothing changes it. It's actually rather common.
