Would it be bad if I left early? I knew I was ill from the start of my morning, I get migraines maybe once every few months and they normally take all day to go away, this was also associated with nausea BUT I wanted to try and duke it out at work since I am new here but I am here at my desk, miserable and nauseous. Would it be wrong if I asked to head home so I can sleep this off? I just don t want to ruin anything here, the ladies are all wonderful and there is 2 other ladies out sick with a stomach virus. Moms, Your thoughts please.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Everyone, you are all amazing, I honestly love hearing your guys' input. I am truly blessed to have you all here to support me and give honest opinions.
Well, I reached out to my boss who was so understanding and awesome, she said I looked horrible and to "go home and get some rest so I can come back and be my cheerful normal self tomorrow" and I will be able to use my accrued PTO, only have to use 4 hours thankfully! I am a new person today and feel 1000 x's better!! Thank you all for your opinions!!

Out with a stomach virus....guess what? You probably will come down with it too. Might be this is just a start of it. Tell the boss and go home.

A few days ago, you posted about your child having a stomach virus. Now you find yourself in the same situation (plus a migraine) with 2 coworkers out sick with the virus.

I'd go to the boss and say, "I know know I am new here, but I have been sick all day and I am concerned I have the same thing the other women have. I've been trying to stick it out but I wonder if it is best for everyone if I confine myself to my home." See if they will let you off with pay, but you can offer to have your pay docked if you think that's the deal breaker. When I had new employees, I just paid them for the sick time, but if they quit before they had officially earned that sick time, I took it from their final paycheck, that's all.

A good boss would want you home and taking your ill self out circulation. I wouldn't mention the migraine right now because you don't know if that's it.

You need to talk to your supervisor about the symptoms. It's very likely she'll err on the side of caution and send you home, as she should. Keep her updated on the situation by e-mail or text or however you guys communicate in your particular office.

EDITED 3/15/16: Your boss sounds awesome. :-)

As a supervisor, I would want you to tell me, and I would send you home. If you don't have any sick time accumulated yet, you could ask if you can make up the time later this week when you are feeling better. Not sure if your workplace does that, but in my workplace, we do that all the time - if someone has to take an hour off for a legit reason on a Tuesday, she just works an extra hour on Thursday and we call it even - as long as no one abuses it, it can work well.

Go home and take care of yourself! You probably have the stomach bug, too! No one else wants to get that.

I agree with Diane B.'s advice. I get nausea with my migraines as well and know how miserable it is. It could be that, or it could very well be a virus. I know that when I'm at work, I don't want anyone spreading germs around me, particularly stomach bugs. The timing is unfortunate given that you're new but if you're sick, you're sick.

Is this stress related to your job??

Personally if you are sick - i don't want you around me. I would go to my boss and explain that I am not feeling well and ask to leave.

Good luck!

talk to them. they may need you there but they may also see that with a migraine you are not able to perform your job as well as if you didn't have head pain. one of my past jobs would of sent me home in a heartbeat, the other refused to let me leave till the migraine was causing blackouts in my vision

I had just started a job in 2011 when I got strep for the first time in forever. I was home for 4 days with it. Well 3, and then my boss sent me home when I tried on the 4th day. I was there for 5 years and left only for a more stable position. Take care of you, because you're no good to them if you're sick.

It's all going to depend on the job, your boss, their corporate culture, etc.
Some might let you have a few unpaid days off, others would not budge an inch and expect you to report to your desk at your usual time the day after your own funeral.
Talk to them and feel out the lay of the land.

I'm glad you spoke with your boss. You could have had the virus as well.

I hope today is better!
