Hey ladies... I was wondering if you all could help me out with some birthday party themes for a 4 year old. Her birthday is dec. 7th so I need ideas soon, so I can start planning and get invitations out. I want more of a unisex theme tho... I don;t think her lil boy cousins and friends will be too thrilled at a princess party or tea party... know what I mean?? Thanks in advance for your ideas!!

What can I do next?

Goodafternoon T.,
I usually look to websites for good ideas, my favorite being www.familyfun.com. You could also google childrens birthday theme sites and it'll pop up with tons of sites to choose from. You could also go to sites like www.iparty.com or even walmart.com to get some ideas. What I usually do first though is ask my kids what type of party they would like. We like to look at the sites together to help get some ideas and then decide together, to make them feel like they are more of a part of it. Now my kids come to me with thier ideas, and after a few they'll get pretty creative on thier own too. Hope this helps you a little. Good luck and let me know what you guys come up with.

Have them go on a safari! Give out stuffed animals instead of goody bags (less sugar, less tears) like lions and tigers and stuff, and give them safari hats! It'll be so cute, and then you can ask everyone what they do in the jungle....grrrrr.

My daughter had her 4th birthday party in April, and we had a pajama party. It was REALLY fun. Everyone came in PJ's, and I gave out slippers to everyone that I found on sale at the Children's Place. They decorated pillow cases with permanent markers, had races hopping around in pillow cases, played freeze-dance where they had to flop down on a pillow instead of just freezing, played "pin the teddy bear on the sleeping girl," stuff like that. The party went from 4-6pm. After the games, we had dinner and cake, and then we ended with a bedtime story in a "tent"--I hung a "neat sheet" from the ceiling to be like a tent, and read the story in there with a flashlight. They loved it. At the end, I took the pillow cases that the kids had decorated and stuck a little toothbrush and travel-sized kids' toothpaste in there along with a few glow-in-the-dark stars and a ring pop or something, and that was the goody bag. It was really fun. Good luck!

I had a home craft party for my son's 4th. I found an age appropriate craft and put all the supplies for the craft in individual containers. Keep it very simple, like a party hat made with a paper plate, or a bug on a wood clothespin, or a puppet out of a paper lunch bag.... Practice the craft. If you can do it in 10 minutes, the kids will probably need at least 20 minutes. Moms and dads usually stay for the party, so you have helpers for the kids, and it keeps them from getting bored. Good luck!

I have always had good luck going back to the old fashioned party themes. Recently we celebrated my son's 13th birthday with kids from ages 3 to 13. I did the donut on a string thing outside of course, and the kids and the adults had a blast with it. If all 4 year olds are coming start out with them arriving in costume, have them bob for apples, make their own goodie bags, do a "candy toss", paint their faces and have some good old fashioned fun. It's also easy on the pocketbook.

I had my daughter dress up as Minnie Mouse and asked if any of the other kids would like to come dressed in disney characters. Some kids are so good with remembering parts of their favorite disney character (movies)you could have them play out the parts. Pinatas are fun also...
good luck

Try to do either an animal, or an alien party. get paper plates, glue, glitter, feathers, etc, and let them make masks to wear. kids love crafts, and it will be really fun for htem. you can get all types of things for them to use, and let their imagination go wild!don't forget to get that stretchy elastic, though, so that they can wear the masks. then they can put on a parade, or whatever.

I can tell you that you can go online & check out the birthdayexpress.com or orientaltrading.com. I have found both of them to be around the same prices & they have many birthday ideas. I have used them for the last two years for both of my boys in planning their birthday parites. I find that they give plenty of ideas & lots of stuff to choose from. You do get more from the websites then in the catalogs that they send to you. But it's a start. Good luck & have fun planning.

Hi T.,

I don't know if you're interested in having a party outside the home, but I own a party place in Smithtown called Celebrating. We do tea parties for little girls and they have a lot of fun. After the tea party in the tea room they move on to the next room where we do their nails and make-up and they play dress-up. They then go back to the tearoom for cupcakes and then we do some dancing with them at the end. It's a 2-hour party and it is reasonably priced. Give a call if you're interested - ###-###-#### - B.

How about a butterfly theme...you could cut out butterfly shapes from white construction paper and provide markers, glitter and other shiny things...go to a paint store ask for paint stirrers or if you can get chop sticks or something after they decorate glue them on to the sticks...FamilyFun has cake ideas, Pillsury.com also...for a goody bag idea maybe a pair of wings if you are only having a few girls..but Oriental trading has a lot of butterfly things...my daughter loved it..and that was 9 years ago...I always have her parties at home...
Regarding the ice cream sundaes idea...you can buy the little dixie cups in a package of 12 and sprinkles etc. for half the price of going out...put a plastic/vinyl table cloth on and they will be fine...good luck..just remember they are only 4, do what would make your daughter happy...not to impress everyone...

Hi there. When my son was four he wanted to have a party with his friends too. We don't have a very big house (having my in laws for dinner is pushing the limits on space) so I called McDonald's and went that route. They require only a 1 or 2 week notice and it is only $5.00 p/child and they will provide a cake for you too if you want. They get a happy meal and stickers and stuff. If they have a play area it is nice and they let you have it for 1 or 2 hours. This way parents HAVE to be on time to pick their child(ren) up and you don't have the hassle of cleaning cake and ice cream off your carpet or other things!! My son's b-day is in January so it made it nice to be able to have his friends somewhere warm. I think for the whole thing I spent maybe $50.00. I hope this helps, it is something fun and inexpensive too.

First of all it doesn't take much to make a 4 year old happy. I believe as parents we worry too much. My 4 year old daughter went to a birthday this weekend and the theme was the color Blue. What made this special was it was the birthday boys request. It's just an idea but my friend really rolled with it..blue bags..blue blow up guitars, blue feathers! Yeahh she's pretty out of the box..she's actually an inventor..but the party was brilliant!..blue fabric everywhere and the children turned the fabric into super hero capes and had the greatest time...it's so easy to please those lil people...have fun with it!;)

What else does your daughter like? Any cartoons that are more unisex? Or how about Dora and Diego? Or even a circus theme or zoo theme? Hope this helps.

I had a princess party for my daughters (both sept. bdays 2 years and six years) and the boys didnt seem to mind so much. they could have cared less that the goody bags were princess themed as long as there were cool prizes inside.

hey T....believe it or not kids love tea party's. the boys just won't admit it. so rethink the tea party if your little one wants one. that is such a nice idea. i asked my 5 year old boy if he would want to go to one and he said yes. and trust me he is a boy all the way. he got evaluated for preschool once they thought he had a.d.d and the psychologists said he is "all boy". i wasn't surprised but never even gave that a thought. but soo if she wants a tea party i would have one. have blue balloons and such. but sometimes it doesn't really matter to kids. they just love birthday parties period...well good luck and i hope all is fine with the plans. don't worry soo much kids have fun anyways...bye for now.J.

Try a simple theme like a color or shapes, the outdoors... etc.

Then use more of a theme on the games and food. I did an undersea one once for a mixed sex crowd. Do all blues and greens. Fo sandwhiches shaped like fish (look for a cookie cutter)... have goldfish snack mix, make an underwater cake with crushed pean sandies for sand.... encourage kids ot wear beach wear under clothing and have an indoor beach party with music and the like.

Something along that line.

Check Oriental Trading Company for accessories!!!
