4 Yo Suddenly Geting Sick on School Bus

I'm kinda stumped on what could be going on with my daughter. She is in pre-k and rides a bus back and forth to school. She did this also last year. Her ride is around and hour as it was last year and she is the 1st one on the bus. Last Thursday she got sick on the bus which she has never done. She felt fine before and felt and was acting fine after. She is off on Fridays and was off Monday due to the holiday. She did it again this morning. She has been on 2-3 hour long car rides for trips that we have taken, and is able to play her leapster, her brothers DS and watch a dvd. She loves school so I dont see that being the problem as she gets upset when she doesnt have school. What can I do to help her? I hate to send her to school with 2 different outfits knowing that they are going to have to change her the minute she gets to school. And driving is not possible as we only have one car and a motorcycle and the biking season is coming to a fast end.( Thats what the husband drives back and forth to work)

Going to add somethings I forgot. S
She does sit in the front of the bus. She is in a "short" bus. I have the car as long as its not raining in the mornings as of now. But once the weather hits the 50s for highs I wont have it. We are not in the city, do not have access to bus service and unfortunately for my husband to car pool back and forth he would have to ask someone to go out of their way to pick them up and bring him home.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I kept her home the following 2 days as they did call me to come get her Tuesday. She went back to school today and I havent gotten a call from the teacher so all must be well. We had the bus driver place her in the isle instead of the window so she is able to watch where they are going. My oldest gets car sick so I do have some Dramamine but trying to get a 4 year old to swallow a pill is kinda hard. We will take things slowly and go from there! Thanks again!

Maybe have a talk with the bus driver. It might be an anxiety thing. Riding the bus that far for a 4 year old is a bit far in my opinion.

Ask the driver to let your daughter sit front and center (literally... you'd think sitting by a window with fresh air is better, but no, being centered helps a LOT). If she knows she's going to do it, have her carry a plastic bag with her, just in case. Also, does she take vitamins? Get her to start taking them at night, after dinner instead.

When my middle child was 4, I swear, she threw up just LOOKING at the car. This went on for months... the pediatrician told me about sitting her front and center (well, that was when I had 2 back seats, so the middle seat it best), and no vitamins in the morning! Car sickness sucks, poor thing :(

I am a school bus driver and I know that sometimes the fumes from the bus can get bad since it is a deisel. Or maybe the driver is different. I have one student that gets sick in the afternoon so I have to put her in the front. Also it may be a bit warm for her. If it is a small bus even if the AC is on its still a bit warm in the rest of the bus. Is she sitting in the front or the back of the bus? That may make a difference. Give her a bag to carry so that if she does get sick she won't get it all over herself. I wish you the best of luck!

So short bus or long bus; it's probably motion sickness. Watching a DVD or doing anything other than looking out the window will make you sick. I only get sick on busses- school busses (I'm a coach so I still ride them). You may want to get wrist bands for motion sickness.

I'm thinking it's probably motion sickness. My granddaughter has recently been telling me that she can't read or play DS or anything in the car anymore because it's starting to make her feel sick. It didn't happen before. So, maybe your daughter is just "developing" motion sickness. I would tell her to be sure to sit up and look out the window; don't read or anything like that, and to open her window if she can. Also, if she starts to feel nausous (sp?) she should put her head between her knees - it really helps to calm the stomach!

My daughters both had issues w/car sickness. The older one grew out of it, but the younger still has it. She has gotten sick on the bus. SHe is in Kindergarten. I have a bag and some tissues in her back pack. She knows how to use them. Also, I have found what she eats for breakfast helps a lot! No eggs, and anything heavy. Cereal, toast, waffle w/light butter, all seem to do well. I also give her some tums. She has some in her pocket so if her tummy feels funny she can take one. They help her a lot, esp. when her tummy is very upset. We have also taught her deep breathing for when she starts to feel ill. It only works for so long, but it does help. I have motion sickness which has gotten worse as I have gotten older, so I know how she feels. Also, sometimes I am fine in certain cars, but others trigger it almost instantly! It may be the bus just doesn't work well for her. Hope that helps! p.s. the ped. approved the tums. We also were thinking about trying the sea bands. :)

Riding in a car and in a bus, are not the same.
Some do get bus motion sickness..... the bus is higher up and 'sways' more than a car and the bus is longer. This is unlike a car.

Tell the bus driver.
Have her sit up FRONT.
Bring a bag with her in case she vomits.
Have some windows/air on her.

Or, can you have the car??? And your Husband car pools to work and home... and/or catches the bus to work????
The reason I say this is: We have 1 vehicle. My Husband... car-pools to work and catches the bus home. So that, I can have the car since I have the kids all day and need it.
Besides, if my Husband took our car to work... it would just be sitting in a parking lot, ALL day... doing NOTHING. And, he'd also have to pay for parking. Which is a waste of our money. Because, a car sitting in a parking lot all day, doing nothing, is a waste of money. My Husband does not need our car for work. He can walk to appointments/meetings and/or uses a co-workers vehicle. And using it only for driving to and from work... is also a waste, because, he can (and does) car-pool to work and catches the bus. Which is cheaper.

my younger brother has issues with this as well. he is fine before school, gets on the bus and feels very sick for the ride and a bit after, then is fine. He states he feels stuffed and with the uneasy ride it makes him sick. try treating for motion sickness. they sell medicine OTC at any drug store. it seems to have helped him a lot.
