4 Year Old Son with Change in Behavior

Over the past few months I've noticed some changes in my 4 year old son. He's always been sensitive to smells, but now he appears to be sensitive (sometimes) to sounds like if he's trying to have a conversation but my 2 year old is making noise in the background then he'll get very frustrated and angry and sometimes won't be able to finish his thought that he was trying to communicate. Also, at the museum or sometimes while watching TV he'll start blinking a lot over and over for a few minutes. Also, he's been potty trained for over a year, but recently hes been having accidents constantly. Not big ones, just enough to wet through his underwear. He's also been having more outbursts of frustrated crying or anger fits - almost temper tantrums again. He so far appears to be left handed, though he can choose his right at times. About 6 months ago he went through a few months of stuttering as he was trying to commnicate. But that is completely gone now and his speech is normal. His eye contact is great. He communicates well, quite verbal but not above age level that I can tell. He plays with his older and younger sisters great. He is active and funny and noisy himself. He is learning to read. He pretend plays. He pays attention to stories from beginning to end. So it doesn't seem like any disorder I know of. However, his father was diagnosed with Discalculia as a child and his uncle (father's brother) has dislexia. Grandfather on that side has learning disablilities as well. Any thoughts???

Just for your peace of mind, you could call the pediatrician, let him/her know of the changes and family history & get a recommendation from him/her as to what you should do from here. Good Luck!

I agree with Manda to rule out strep even if there is no sign of illness. My kids will test +, with no sore throat or fever. If the rapid comes back negative, make sure they run a culture. Strep is connected to all the things you mentioned.

When my son had issues arrise, I tried to dismiss it thinking it will go away as fast as they came. Also, I saw a couple things improve on their own and thought it was a sign that nothing was really wrong. Well, not the case.

Just make the appt and rule it out.

Have him evaluated for PANDAS by a doctor who treats PANDAS. It is a little understood illness. He appears to have many of the symptoms. Below is a list. Another source for you is www.pandasnetwork.org.

The below list is incorrect, in that Dr. Cathy Chong, ENT, does NOT treat PANDAS in Massachusetts. No ENT doctors medically treat PANDAS. Please refer to the PANDAS Foundation website for an updated and correct list of doctors by state: www.internationalpandasfoundation.org

The blinking thing makes me think he may need glasses, we had somethign similar to that.
The rest could be a change in routine, and besides someone making noise while you are talking is distracting:)

my first thought is a major upheaval in his routine. have you moved recently? switched schools or daycare providers? had a new baby? any of these can trigger all of the symptoms you describe - my son went through similar when we moved and he had to start at a new school. also some of the anger issues may just have to do with the age (compounded by any changes mentioned above) - my son has been going through a phase lately, i have a feeling it's a growth spurt, and his tantrums are CATASTROPHIC. i have never seen him, at 2, or at 3, throw tantrums like these. we're working through it and have found some tricks to help avoid them altogether, but i have heard tons of moms on here complaining of the same in their 4 year olds. could be a combination of a couple things. with my son, i started feeding him an additional snack, first thing in the morning, because he eats breakfast at school and it's too long to wait - hence causing the severe meltdowns in the mornings. good luck. hope you find something that works.

I am literally running out the door, but wanted to respond ASAP. Go - run!- and get a strep test done. You want a rapid and a 72 hour culture. BOTH!

Go to ACN Forums and click on the PANDAS discussion forum and ask this same question there. It sounds like PANDAS to me. Here is a site with PANDAS symptoms: www.webpediatrics.com

More later or message me- my daughter has this and started same way exactly.

It could be sensory integration issues, which become more intrusive when the sufferer is trying to focus, learn a new skill, is tired or hungry or sick, or hasn't had enough of (or has had too much of) some kind of sensory input.

There's a very comprehensive set of checklists at this site to help identify kids who are hypersensitive, hyposensitive, or a combination, plus loads of information about how parents deal with children's sensory needs: http://www.mamapedia.com/questions/913752821298495489?new...

Hi mom. Your story sounds similiar to my son Michael. Michael was diagnosed with Hyper-sensory issues when he was five. He just turned seven and is doing well. Sensory therapy worked wonders for him. It helped him with emotional regulation and desensitizing his world made a big difference. I write a lot about these things on my blog. ____@____.com

Does your school district have an early childhood evaluation coming up? Most do and he can be tested for his age level skill. Also get his pediatrician involved NOW. If they won't listen it is time for a new doctor. Momma's know when there is something up. Ask what resources, doctors, evaluators are needed to assess him to make sure you are giving him everything he needs from an early age. Many issues present themselves uniquely. Could be PANDAS, mild spectrum autism, Celiac, Diabetes, Thyroid problems. So now is the time to make sure it is not something to address...urgently.
