Hi everyone,

I want to take my 4 month old to the pool for the first time and I was hoping to get some advice. Can anyone recommend a good sunscreen that's environmentally sensitive? Also, what's the best way to introduce him to the water? I want it to be a positive experience for him. Thanks for your help!

I found Aveeno baby sunscreen is good. it reads "mild as water". but, it does contain chemical so for a 4mo old I would check with your ped to make sure they agree. get a sun bonnet and take an umbrella or something to keep out of the sun. for getting in the pool, who knows how he will react! my daughter LOVES her bath and so I assumed that the first time in the pool would be great. I think she was about 6 months, she looked at me like i was NUTS. but, the second time in the pool at 7 months she had fun. I guess just go slow in the water, sit on the edge or on the step and splash the water and see how he reacts. let him set the pace.

Shaklee has a 100% natural and organic sunscreen. I use it on my 6 month all the way to my 13 year old. It's great.

Check out the website www.cosmeticsdatabase.com for info. on safe sunscreens - which includes having several brands rated for safety. California Baby Sunscreen is sometimes sold out Whole Foods. You can also get it online. I am now using Earth's Best Organic Sunscreen for me 1 year old son. Check with your doctor to make sure anything you put on your son is safe for a baby under 6 months. In general, you want to make sure the sunscreen has two ingredients: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Good luck!

There's a great site by the Environmental Working Group called Skin Deep, which does an excellent job of tracking toxins and other scary ingredients in makeup, baby products (including sunscreens) and a whole bunch of other things.

EWG's Skin Deep has recently looked at sunscreens and lists the ones that get the highest and lowest ratings at http://cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/sunscreens2008/

You can also take a look at the EWG site for other information at http://www.ewg.org

I've been using the California Baby sunscreens and bug repellents on my daughter (she's just turned 13 months) and I love them all. They have one of the highest ratings on EWG, too!

Hope this helps. Have a great summer!

I'm not sure but you might want to check with your doctor. I don't think they can wear sunscreen until they are 6 months or older. I would just double check to be sure. You can also go to www.askdrsears.com.
Have fun at the pool!
