4 1/2 Mo Old Teething???

My son has been drooling now for about a month and a half and pulling on his ears. The doctor checked and no ear infection.
I think he may be teething. The last several nights he has woken up and nothing calms him to go back to sleep not even nursing.

What should I look for as sign of teething?
What can I do to help him?

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

Frozen waffles are great for teething babies- not to hard and they get soggy enough to swallow. Just make a few batches and put in the freezer. You can offer it to him and see what he thinks. Also, with teething don't be alarmed if he comes down with a fever a few days before the teeth erupt- I also have found that teething tablets made by Hylands help too- you can get them at whole foods and they are homeopathic and very safe.

Take care,

Molly

oh yeah! My daughter started teething at about 4 months. She is now about 7 months, still no teeth. I take her to Network Chiropractic/ Cranial Sacral here in Oakland and it helps sooo much. She does the same ear pulling and head rubbing, waking up etc, it seems almost desperate, and getting her worked on seems to to relieve her discomfort. But sometimes there is not much to be done. I also give her some homeopathic teething drops that help. I tried them myself and they are a bit soothing in the mouth. When nothing helps I use Bach's Rescue Remedy, which helps me as well.
But the thing she loves best is frozen celery. I'll put the drops or rescue remedy on them or give 'em to her plain.
Good Luck! Peace, J.

Look for changes in his gums (swelling, small white spots, larger pale pink or reddish areas, small holes where the white dot use to be.)

To help him feel better give him hard things to chew on and if its cold that's even better. My daughter has some wood stacking toys that she loves to chew on. And Sassy makes these teethers that are shaped like fish and can be chilled (plus they're BPA free.) Frozen wash cloths are great and if you have any of those teething feeders (they look like a pacifier with a mesh sack where the nipple should be) you can fill those with frozen fruit, baby food, milk or formula.

Last thing, don't use Ambasol (sp?). It’s very easy for little children to overdose on it and that can cause bleeding problems. we've seen two pediatricians (we moved) and both advised against it (one of them even commented that she thought it should be pulled from the baby stores and the labeling changed - she had a patient that was hospitalized and nearly died.)

Hi! I can totally empathize. My son (now 2 1/2) started the drooling and chewing around 3 months (like yours). By the end of his 5th month he had 4 teeth!

Watch for a hard white ridge in the lower front. Then one day it will look the same but feel sharp when you touch it. My son was a fast teether so two days later there were teeth, but other kids I know have stayed in that sharp ridge stage a bit longer.

Give him tylenol to take the edge off and a teething ring or just a frozen washcloth works great (get it wet, fold it up, put it in the freezer).

For a very quick temporary fix try baby ambesol, but don't use it allthe time.... just like if you're at a wedding and he is suddenly in terrible pain.

HTH and good luck with everything,
T.

My daughter started drooling and doing the same thing around 4+ months (and you could even see the white on her gums) and she got her 1st tooth at 11 1/2 months. This is not to say that your son is not teething, but I think everyone thinks there kid is teething when they get those symptoms. He should have really soft fat gums or feel the gums for sharp points coming in the front.
