3YO Holding His Pee In?

My 3YO is completely potty trained during the day. He is getting there in terms of night time training as well. About every other day he will wake up with a dry Pull Up after sleeping 8 or so hours. I'll take off his Pull Up and ask him to use the toilet. He will refuse. He can eat breakfast, start playing, and only about an hour after he wakes up will he run to the bathroom to pee. He also does this after his nap (he does not wear Pull Ups for naps anymore), and his teacher tells me he does it at school too.

As someone who has to pee constantly, and especially when I wake up, I find this really weird. He gets enough fluids and when he does pee, it's a LOT. I don't want to force him to go to the bathroom if it's not necessary to do that. But could it be hurting his little body to hold it in so long? It doesn't seem to bother him at all.

Thank you!

My son is 5 and holds it forever. He will literally be standing and doing the side to side, keep your legs together dance - and still REFUSE to pee, telling us he doesn't have to go. He then rushes at the last minute to go. I know it's not good to hold your pee, but he isn't bothered by it, he never has accidents - he just waits until the last minute to go. It's like he's too busy/preoccupied to waste his time going.

My 4 year old can go 11 hours overnight, wake up dry and still wait a while to go pee. I don't get it either. As long as he is going I don't see a big problem with waiting a bit if he doesn't feel he has to go and as long as its not causing accidents.

I can hold mine for hours after I wake up, and my children the same way. It doesn't bother me to not go for 12 -14 hours, either, and I drink a lot of water, even at night. I think it's just a difference in some people.

Do you remember when you gave birth that you were told to do the Koegle (sp?) exercises? That was to strengthen the bladder after 9 mos of pregnancy and pressure from a growing baby inside, and frequent trips to the john. Right?
So your son seems to have a toddler's version of bladder control. It probably isn't harming him to hold it. That's what a whole lot of people would love to have. If it isn't necessary, don't force him. But let him know that when he feels he needs to pee, that's when he goes to the john.

My youngest daughter was like this, and our pediatrician said as long as she is getting enough fluids, don't worry about it. She is 21 now, and still does not go to the bathroom for about an hour after she gets up in the morning. I am usually awakened because I have to go.
You can always ask his doctor at your next visit. In the meantime just make sure he keeps getting his fluids!
