Ok so here's my question. I am 38 weeks prengnat and I've dialated to 2cm and my doctor called me and told me I have a urinary track infection and gave me a medicine to help get rid of it! So What if I go into labor? Will it cause more pains? Will it cause problems to my baby? Will it make me go into labor? How am I suppose to tell if my pains are contractions or pains from the urinary tract infection? Someone please help me! Im freaken out a little bit here!

What can I do next?

Unfortunately 2 cm could mean that you have your baby tomorrow or four weeks from now. There's no way to predict! The urinary tract infection will not put you into labor, just be sure to drink plenty of water and take your antibiotics as prescribed. It will also not make your labor worse-- contraction pain is very distinct from the discomfort of a UTI (usually achiness above your groin area, burning with urination, and possibly some itching). Good luck!

Cranberry supplements and plenty of fluids ALWAYS make my symptoms go away within several hours....The infection may still be there and you should still continue with medication and/or supplements but at least you won't have to worry about confusing the symptoms. Again, I have never taken antibiotics for a UTI either, cranberry supplements are all I ever needed to take care of the situation, but you may or may not be comfortable skipping the antibiotics.

LOL!!! You won't go into labor. Take the medicine. UTI pains are different from Labor pains. Labor pains are abdominal and you will know if you are in labor. UTI pains you usually feel when you pee. Its like Peeing razors, at least the one I had did. Calm down, you'll be fine. Even if you went into labor, 38 weeks isn't anything to worry about.

First of all, calm down. I personally have never had a UTI, but I have been in labor. You will definitely know labor pains - consistent, strong (and get stronger), don't go away despite anything you do. Yes, a UTI could put you into labor, but at 38wks the baby would be fine. As for being dilated, doesn't mean much. I was 2cm with my son for 2-3wks before I went into labor. I am now 37wks with #2 and as of Wed was 1cm, but after having a child, I don't put my faith in how much and for how long I've been dilated (or lost the mucous plug) cause it could still be a few weeks - DS #1 was born at 41wks. Good luck and hope you get to feeling better from the UTI!

I had a uti at about 36 1/2 weeks with my last, I delivered at 38 weeks, a few days after I finished my medicine. You will be able to tell the difference between contractions and pains from the uti, the pain will be more intense and will get stronger the longer you are in labor. I don't know what problems it will cause my doctor didn't tell me to not worry me. I am not sure what medicine the dr gave you, but mine gave me the cream that I had to put in me because it works faster then the pill. After my first dose, I felt so much better but it was really uncomfortable to put in, it was like putting in a tampon. After a few days of putting it in and hurting like no other, I got the idea to rub some of the cream on the outside of the applicator and that helped get the full dose in. I wish my doctor would have told me to do that. I hope you feel better soon.

Its funny how some of the people answering are saying that a uti won't put you in labor. It will if untreated because it happened to me. Its really painful and can put you in preterm labor.

Your belly will harden with each contraction when you are in labor.

Contractions are very different from UTI pain. The medicine will not make you go into labor or cause problems to the baby. If the medicine is an antibiotic (usually), it is just as if you had strep and your doctor gave you an antibiotic to treat it. I have struggled with UTI's off-and-on for years and have had a few even when pregnant. Believe me, you will know the difference once your contractions begin. No need to freak out, just treat the UTI and then you will be healthier and ready to deliver! :)
