3 Yr Old with Swollen Tonsils for over a Month
Hello ladies,
I'm needing help with an issue for my 3 year old son. He has had some frustrating situations reoccuring and I'm not quite sure what to do. He's had swollen and red tonsils for over a month and every other week or two goes through coughing spells. He coughs almost constantly during these times. He also seems to have swollen adenoids, as he rarely ever has snot come out of his nose and breathes primarily out of his mouth. He is allergic to oats, peanuts, milk, and seems to be sensitive to MSG which makes him have a similar asthma response. He sleeps very heavily and for long periods of time during his daily nap time and often grinds his teeth.
We're between a rock and a hard place as we're waiting for my husband to move from a temp agency position to actually being hired on in the company he works for and do not have insurance coverage. I do like to cook naturally and use herbs and supplements, but am curious to find out if anyone else has dealt with a similar situation or have any other ideas on what I should do for his well-being. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hey E.,
When my daughter was three, we went thru the same thing. We took her to the Dr. several times, and they couldn't find anything wrong. Well, long story short, 2 months later, I looked in my daughter's nose with a flashlight, and found a piece of foam. It had caused a throat and nose infection.
Needless to say, we have a diffrent Dr., and my daughter is fine. You might take a look in his nostrils just in case!

E., I understand the hardship of not having insurance but this baby needs serious medical attention. Asthma, allergies and strep throat ( what you seem to be describing with the swollen red throat and cough) are nothing to mess with and can be life threatening. Untreated strep is very serious and can spread to his blood stream. Even if you have to go to the health department, get this child to the doctor fast. No amount of healthy cooking is going to work.. If he is allergic to one of the herbs etc in his food, that could be making it worse. I hope he is well soon.

Check with the county health department, or do you have state or federal coverage for underinsured people? Several of my husband's relatives have had their tonsils removed (whether as children or adults) because they consistently got huge infections. I believe they're all on state health insurance.

My son was 2 1/2 when he had to have his tonsils removed. He'd had strep once a month for 6 months. They got so bad that he actually had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance because he quit breathing. We thought he choked on something, but after a broncoscopy we discovered he had choked on his own swollen tonsils. You really don't want to mess around with this stuff. We almost lost our son because of putting off treatment. Please be careful. All the other ladies are right so far...go to DHS and get on a health plan that will help. Its quick, easy and free.
By the way....is it Rhema that your hubby is attending? My husband graduated from there several years ago. Just curious.
Good luck with everything!!!

E., have you checked with the County Health Dept. in your area for a clinic or doctor who would charge a nominal fee? I also believe in and use natural/herbal remedies, but with small children I like knowing what I'm dealing with first. It sound as though you watch his diet carefully because of his know allergies--that's a good thing. Since the tonsils usually signal when there is an infection else where, it sounds as though he's fighting somekind of virus. A pediatrician will probably advise removing his tonsils and adnoids at some point. I'm praying that the Lord will provide the care you and your son need.

I would also agree with the person who suggested seeing a doctor. Most communities have some kind of free clnic for people without insurance. You could probably call the salvation army, health departent, a church, or a hospital/doctor's office to find out where to go. It sounds like he needs his tonsils and adenoids removed soon. If he is seriously having trouble breathing while sleeping, this can put a lot of stress on his heart and cause long termm problems. Have you checked to see if you qualify for medicaid? Also, most states now have a program which gives free health insurance to all kids under 18. Good luck!

Take him off wheat and all cereal grains for 3 months. AlLso no dairy- obviously. It will be tough but you need to try to feed him as much raw fruit and vegetables as you can get down him.
Basically you need to let his immune system rest. There are many supplements out there in liquid or sublingual form. Basics would be Vitamin C, cod liver oil, B complex... If my kids start to get a sore throat I make them go out side and open their mouths. Good 'ol UV kills all kinds of bacteria especially in warm dark places.
Allergies are usually in response to foreign proteins so consider all animal products to be suspect. It would even be helpful to use a digestive enzyme with his meals so that the molecules are broken down into their smallest components. Beano is liquid bit I think only works on carbohydrates. Look for a liquid that works on all three- fats, proteins and carbohydrates.
Anyway, you can probably fix this yourself with some work. Just think in terms of cleaning up his diet, his air and his environment. No chemicals, use only pure soaps and as little as possible. You may need a chlorine filter for the bath water...anything that stresses his system- remove. You can use 20 Mule Team Borax for laundry and soap.
Good luck,
M
