3 Hour Glucose Test?

My 1 hour glucose test came back a little high so I am scheduled to take a 3 hour one on Friday. Has anyone ever failed the 1 hour and had the results from the 3 hour test come back normal. I read on a blog that during the 3 hour test you have to urinate and have blood drawn 5 times is that correct? If so I am really not looking forward to Friday.

Thanks
Tina

I had the same thing, and my 3 hr was normal. My family is very full of diabetics, both my mom and dad's side. There has not been a single person in my family who has had a pregnancy WITHOUT having GD, until me. I guess I just got lucky, and was watching my diet knowing my risk.

With my daughter I was high on the 1 hour and had to do the three hour and it came back just fine. THey check your blood every hour so four needles (one pre glucose, thne at hours 1, 2, and 3)... no urination.

The hard part for a lot of folks is drinking the liquid. Since I have an insane sweet tooth it did not bother me, but some folks have problems with the sweetness.

Good luck with the test!

I failed my 1 hour, passed my 3 hour barely. Yes you do have to have your blood drawn a lot, I don't remember having to pee though. Also, I for whatever reason carry more glucose in the tips of my appendages (ie, fingers) so if you feel you do the same, don't let them prick your finger, just do an actual draw from your arm to get a more accurate reading. Also, the morning of the test, do not eat a sugary cereal or toast loaded up with jam, it will affect the results. Eat something high in protein, like some eggs. And lastly, you will get beyone bored!! Bring an iPad with movies loaded on it or a laptop or a good book that will keep you hooked. At my docs office, I wasn't allowed to leave so they gave me my own exam room with a pillow to climb up on the table and nap if I wanted. But that little exam room gets annoying after the first hour:)

My sister just did this test on Tuesday! She had her blood drawn 4 times (once before she drank the stuff and 3 times during--1x per hour). She found out the next day. They test 4 things--3 were completely normal and one was a little high (carbs). She is not labeled as having Gestational Diabetes.

My one hour came back high as well. My three hour came back normal, but I was actually scared. I literally couldn't keep my eyes open and konked out. I didn't even wake up for the blood draws. I slept through the whole thing.
I thought surely that couldn't be a good sign, but they told me it's not uncommon to just sleep because the body is doing what it's supposed to do with that much glucose in your system.

Anyway, that's how it was for me. I'm accustomed to needles so they don't bother me and like I said, I just slept through the whole thing.
I felt better after getting home and getting something to eat.

It's really not that bad, in my opinion.

Best wishes.

I had to do the 3 hour test with my second child and it wasn't a big deal, and I'm afraid of needles!! I brought a book with me and looked at it as about 3 hours of reading time, which was sort of nice!! My test came back normal as well, which was a huge relief! I don't remember having to give a urine test but my youngest is now 13!!

Good luck!

Yes, I had to do this with both my kids. Both my 3 hour tests turned out normal though. All I recall is being bored out of my mind because you have to fast, then drink this stuff at certain intervals, then they take your blood, but you can't leave the facility or eat or drink anything else. That's what I remember. The blood taking didn't bother me, but the stuff they gave me was so sweet, on an empty stomach, it gave me an upset stomach.

Bring something to do like read or play games on your phone or tablet. It's b..o..r..i..n..g......

It's been years. If I remember correctly, it's blood 4 times. I know there's no urine test.

Make sure you have something to read or do, like a puzzle book. 3 hours is a long time to sit around the office.

The worst part is drinking the orange drink.

I did that for my 2nd pregnancy. The first was "iffy" (?) so we had to go back and do the 3 hour. It was perfectly fine, normal results, no diabetes (yay!). Also it wasn't really that bad at all. I brought a light hearted little book to keep me company, but fell asleep and the lady woke me when she came in. She just smiled and said "go on and relax--your husband has your son, and this is just time all to yourself to rest".The blood draws: it's been 3 years, so I'm not totally sure, but I seem to remember that it was just one needle stick, and 5 little tubes. So it wasn't bad at all. Make sure you follow the instructions: nothing to eat, and I think only water to drink....whatever they say, follow it exactly so you don't get a false sugar reading or whatever. Bring a book, ipod, get ready for a nap, etc.

I had the 3 hour test with both of my kids and each time I came back positive for gestational diabetes. Yes, you have to have blood drawn. I think it was five times. I don't remember urinating though. All I remember is I had a lot of needle marks on my arm that I might've looked like an addict. I sure hope you don't have GB--I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I was hungry all the time during my pregnancies, for my second one, I had to give myself insulin shots. The only silver lining was that I only gained 15 pounds during each pregnancy. I wish you all the best!

I had the two hour one done and they took blood 5 times, I didn't have to give a urine sample. Mine came back borderline diabetic like it has been all my life and was not that different from my regular blood test.

Just plan to go and spend that time in the lab. They will have you sit in the waiting room and go back in to have the blood drawn. It is long and boring so bring a good book.

I've heard of people failing the 1 hour but passing the 3 hour but unfortunately that did not happen to me =( I was so scared of the 3 hour test (especially after reading some real horror stories online) but it really wasn't that bad. The worst part was drinking the sugary drink. They took my blood four times - once when I first got there before drinking the sugary drink, then once after the first, second, and third hour(s). I don't remember having to give a urine sample although I do remember going potty a few times while there, especially after the sugary drink. Try not to worry too much because if you truly do have the gestational diabetes it's best to know about it and get on the proper diet for your baby!

Good Luck!

yes, when I was pregnant with my daughter, I ended up getting sick and throwing up the 1 hour test. They were able to get the first blood test done though and I failed it. When I did the 3 hour I passed. Good luck!

I failed all three of my 1 hours test and passed all three of my 3 hour tests!

If you ask they can put in a "butterfly needle" and tape it down so you don't have to get pricked so many times!

Happened to me with my last pregnancy. I was not told to fast before the 1 hour test so I ate lunch & immediately went for my test...FAIL. I took the three hour one and passed. Bring a book or a magazine to read and good luck!
