My son developed diarhea on our trip to Mexico on Friday. He'd been complaining of "tummy ache" and constipated (no poop) from Saturday (4/11) to about Tues and Wens. Gave him fruit Sat to Thurs. Pooped on Thursday; solid. Friday poop was hersey squirts (sorry TMI). Still having diarhea today (got back yesterday). Is Immodium okay (he is 3; no blood; no fever, no vomiting). also giving pedialyte. Should I call off tomorrow?

What can I do next?

I would call his dr. There are all kinds of parasites and bacteria in the water in Mexico. He could have caught something while there. I would not give Immodium, but would give pedialite until you can get into see his doctor.

Been there. Done that. Take him to the pediatrician. They will give him medicine to get rid of it. It won't go away easily on its own, like regular diarhhea. ICK! Sorry!!

Hi D.!

Have you cut back on the fruit that got his poop moving? Have you called your family's doctor?

In the meantime, keep going mom! I know it can be so hard to figure out what to do and when. Good luck and keep up posted!

Hope this helps!

The water is always safer in Mexico. Take him to the Dr. it may be a parasite or something from the water/fruit. I would NOT give him immodium without your doctors approval.

Get him to the doc. He likely has a parasite. When I was in Mexico I got one and we were very, very careful.

Hello D.,

you may want to call the doctor. Also get some probiotics/acidophilus at a healthfood store. they have chewables for kids. you probably should take some too. the probiotics will help balance the flora in his intestines and help with the diahrrea. Good luck! ~Carmen~

He probably got something from the water. The fruit is washed in their water and sometimes you can get pretty sick from it. Some people call it Montzumas revenge. I had it for 2 weeks before. I thought I was being carefull but I guess not. Sometimes its actually little parasites in the water, I know that sounds gross, so I would take him to the doc for a quick check up and let them know. They might have to give him something.

Our pediatrican recommended using Gatorade instead of Pedialyte because a lot of kids will reject the Pedialyte because of its salty flavor.

Also, I'd get him checked out by the doctor because Mexican standards for clean water/food are a lot lower than they are in the US. Keep up the fluids too.

I don't know how long it takes for parasites to appear, since you were out of the country and he is so little, I would call the doctor. I think the other poster that said the BRAT diet would be a good sart, stick to it for about 5 days, and if no relief then definitely go to the doctor. The reason I say 5 days, is because if it is a stomach virus it could take that long for it to go away. I also am a believer in probiotics, especially after a bout of diarrhea.

Normally, I would just say try the BRAT diet and wait a few days. But since you were in another country, it might be a good idea to call the doctor, just to be safe.

Hello D., Please take your son to the doc's for a stool sample since you were out of the country. When my son was 2 we went to Disney World. Afterward he had this issue for weeks. When I finally took him in, the doc said he had contracted a parisite that is only found outside of out country, but he must have picked it up at the park were so many tourists visit. It was a simple, fast treatment, I don't remember exactly what they gave him. Hope he gets well soon.

I agree with what everyone else said. On a more personal note, I'm sorry for the loss of your little angel. I've never seen anyone put it quite like you did. It's a beautiful sentiment. Good luck and God bless!

My Ped always advises me to use the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast), and that, with a LOT of water, seems to do the trick for us. Some kids react differently to the bananas (making it worse), so if yours is one, you might want to omit that, and offer something else binding, like cheese instead?

I would take him to the doctor right away. You were in another country and they don't have the same standards as the US does when it comes to food and water.

*smile* I wouldn't call off tomorrow, but I would take him to the doctor. I managed to get a virus in Mexico one time and it really messed up my stomach for a while. We have high quality meds that can help with that! Good luck!

I would let it run its course its a possiblity it almost over. He could have a virus or he could just be clearing his system from all the fruit juice and fruit. I'd say if hes not better by thursday take him to the ped. Don't push him to eat. The severe stomach flu is going around he may have a touch of it. Keep him drinking though.
