I am starting to plan my son's 2nd birthday party and was hoping for a few suggestions.... My son loves dogs so we are going to go with a puppy theme, does anyone have any ideas for games or activities we could have? There are a few older kids (4 and 5) that will be there and we want to make sure there is plenty to do for all ages. Oh! And is birthday is in November so indoor activities will probably be needed.

Also...I am having a hard time thinking of what to get my son for a birthday gift. We were thinking a little bike, but I'd hate to get him something he won't really be able to use for a few months...any ideas?

THANK YOU!!!!

So What Happened?

My apologies for the delayed thank you...but THANK YOU ALL for the great suggestions! The party was a blast and the kids had a great time! We played "feed the puppy" bean bag toss, set up his little tikes picnic table in the living room with puppy coloring pages and had dog themed food (hot dogs, mini corn dogs, and scooby snack graham crackers). It was a lot of fun and again thank you all so much for the help!

I love the clown idea and someone to make balloons idea. I also think you should do a puppy cake, pin the tail on the puppy for ALL of kids (my son is almost 2 and would need help but he would love to be involved). A cake walk with puppy prints (have parents help them go around and stop) -- prize=they get a cup cake. Then give a party prize bag as they leave. Have a great time!

Hi K.:
You could do pin the nose, ear or tail on the puppy. The kids do a simple craft and make a puppy mask or hat to wear with different types of noses, eyes, ears etc. Oriental trading (online or get their magazine) is a good place to look or a local craft store. Cupcakes or a cake w/dog and puppy faces might be fairly easy too. You could use candies to decorate. I would look online for more ideas. You could color pictures of dogs/dog houses etc.;pinata shaped like a dog or puppy would be good too and that can be part of your "gift" to the kids for coming...you could have plain brown bags and they could glue or draw items to make it look like a puppy. Gift-Fisher Price has a puppy that sings/makes noises and you can press his paws; it is brown and has blue ears. I hope they still make it because my son and daughter LOVED it when they were little. Also, a pound puppy would be great. They make noises too and bark (with batteries of course). I think you can even buy a dog house for them. All the Best and Enjoy the party and your little boy.

I gave out recycled crayons for my daughter's second birthday. I purchased them on etsy.com but you can also make them yourself if you have bits of crayons that need to be recycled.

As far as games are concerned, we had my daughter's easel out and the kids had fun taking turns playing it. We used it to draw a donkey on (we actually let one of the kids draw a donkey) and then used a paper with a piece of tape for the kids to pin the tail.

There are so many great ideas that you can do do with kids :)

Go with what he needs, he is two and is just happy to unwrap something. If he does not yet have them hot wheels are great. A puppy cake, pin the tail on the puppy for the older kids. A cake walk with puppy prints, they get a cup cake or party prize.

My son will be two at the end of October. We are planning on just making cupcakes and taking them to the apartment park and letting the parents talk, and kids play. In November they will need coats, but probably no snow yet.

Enjoy him being little enough that almost any thing you do for the party is great and enough.

Hello,
Instead of pin the tale on the donkey. Draw a picture of a puppy without a tail, cut out some tails, put tape on them (since the kids will be so young) & you have a game of tape the tail on the puppy. Or you could always do the ears instead.

small version of twister.

If I were you, I would make the party simple, because of the attention span of two year-olds. An idea could be to hire a clown or magician or even a juggler, even the 4 and 5 year olds would love the clown. You probably could even see if you know anyone who would dress up like a clown to make balloon dogs or something. When my son turned two, we gave him his new toddler bed. If you have already given him a toddler bed, you could give accessories to go with the bed, like new blankets. You could also get a new bath towel. I found that two year olds really like to just open gifts and play with the wraping paper rather than the object. So, you could save getting the bike for Christmas or Easter or just for the summer starting next year. Good luck on your planning.

The game "who stole the bone from the puppy dog" is fun. One child is the puppy and sits in the middle with a "bone" by him. He closes his eyes and one of the other kids (I would have an adult pick who) sneaks up, takes the bone, goes back to his spot and hides the bone behing his back. Then the puppy tries to guess who it was!

When I was planning my son's 3rd birthday party, I searched for kid's games online and found several websites that listed ideas. I am sorry that I do not remember the web addresses off hand, but there were several that listed numerous field day games that required very little prep or supplies. There were also recipes for homemade face paint and patterns and other activities like sand art and such.

Good Luck
