OK moms, My doc says I am 2 cm dil and 60% effaced. However, I am only 36 weeks. How much longer? What have been your experiences?

What can I do next?

I was 2-3 cm dilated and 80% from 35 weeks on with my 2nd daughter. I ended up going past my due date and having to be induced. Dilation and effacement really don't mean very much and certainly can't predict when labor will start. Could be today... could be 5 weeks from now.

Good luck and congrats!

Hi Sylvia!
At 37 weeks I went to my doctor and was 50% effaced and 1 cm dilated. He told me he'll see me in a few days or few weeks. Well he saw me the next day! I think it's so different for everyone. I had a co-worker who walked around here 3 cm dilated for over a month! Good luck!

I was dialated to a 1 for two days and dialated to a 3 for a week and dialated to a 4 for a week until my doctor induced me after I begged and pleaded with her. Since they try not to take you until you are actively dialating or your water breaks or you are a week past your due date. I had my membranes striped at three centimeters and did not speed along anything. Just depends on your body and how ready it is. I had really bad back labor and it was super painful so I was nausiated the whole time and could barely eat. I was rocking back and forth through the whole night to just make it to the next day. If you can tolorate pain well then it will defantely make it easier. If this is your first baby then it usually takes the longest due to your body never doing this before. They say latent labor is from 1 to 4 and things start moving super fast after 4. Just pack your bags and prepaire to go the hospital for the final day. I went 7 or 8 times during the time I was dialating from 1 to 4. Count your contractions and once they get to be consistant and 5 minutes apart start heading to the hospital. You still have a little bit ahead of you so hang in there. Good Luck on your new arrival....

Good Morning Sylvia.. Welcome to Mama's in Waiting Mod.
Sweetie it could be a few or several more days or right up until your Due date. Our DIL was 3cm dil 70% for a month and a half before Corbin came along, then she was induced. SLEPT through her labor....lol 2 Pushes 10 count and he was here.

You really never know Sylvia for sure. Baby gets here when it decides they've had enough time in the oven. :)

Best of everything to you Sylvia, praying for a quick delivery, with a Beautiful, Healthy Bundle of sweet kissable cheeks & toes and velvety fingers to hold for a lifetime.
God Bless you

I had my daughter last week and I was 42 weeks at only 1cm and 90% effaced. I ended up being induced and it still took 32 hours of labor for her to come. Every woman's body is different, so it's really hard to say.

Keep your bag packed.
Enjoy the weather, at least for the next day or two.
Relax, read a good book, your life will soon change forever!
Everyone handles labor/childbirth differently. Just remember that.... it could be today, chances are you'll become a mom in a few more weeks. Keep us posted!

I was dialated to a 4 and effaced at 90% for 6 weeks. My daughter was dialated to a 2 and effaced at 90% for a couple weeks that we know if. You'll have a better idea when you start to lose your mucus plug, are having a lot of braxton hicks, and if you start to feel nauseated for no real reason (without fever and or a stomach bug) then just be ready :) Your body may even get diahrea as a way of getting ready. So you could feel like you have a stomach bug but be going into labor. As you get closer you will be much more emotional and the nesting instinct should kick in a lot more too, if it hasn't happened already.

Every person is different and every pregnancy is different! I didn't dilate at all with 2 of my kids. My other one I was dilated to a 3 for almost 6 weeks (starting at 32 weeks) until they induced me at 38 weeks. I am currently dilated to a 3 and have been for a week (I'm currently 38 weeks) and there is no sign of progress. Others I know dilate and go into labor right away. So, it totally depends on you and your pregnancy. Every one is different! Good luck!!!

It's different for everyone, it just depends on your body and baby, but I went from 38wk to 41.5wks at 2cm, then had to be induced before a holiday (dr. choice/recommendation). I'll hope for a speedy time for you, but just don't panic if it doesn't progress, it can happen. Good luck!!

as usual, the mom's are right...there is NO telling! sorry hon! it'll happen don't you worry...just try to relax and enjoy these last few days...!

for the record, a few days after my due date, i had an appointment, on a friday, and wasn't dilated at all, so they scheduled me to be induced on monday, but my water broke on sunday morning, and everything was hunky dory. good luck...and congrats on your little blessing!!

ps, since i've had my son i've learned a bit more, and in my opinion i would try not to induce unless medically necessary...everyone i know who has been (and all the posts i've seen on here), when they were induced it took FOREVER. i really feel that's because these little guys just aren't ready. it seems to make it a lot harder on the baby and the mom both. just my opinion...just try to be patient! ya know it'll happen eventually! :)

At 37 weeks with my first son, I was 3 cm dilated, 80% effaced and -1 station. My doctor told me if he were a betting man, he'd put money on me having the baby that week. Well, I went two days over my due date!!! I waited more than three weeks longer. There's no telling how much longer you'll be waiting for your little one! Good luck with everything!!!

It is a good sign that your body is preparing for the delivery, but it's impossible to pin point a time. I was 37 weeks when my doctor told me I was 3 cm dilated and 80% effaced with my first child. When asked what that meant, my Doc said I can go into labor tonight, tomorrow, or 3 weeks from now. 5 days later, I went into labor.

Chill out and go on about your business. It could be (and at 36 weeks SHOULD be) several more weeks out.

Hi S. Every pregnancy and person is diferent with my first I was 2cm at 80% from the time I was 37 weeks until I had my son at 39w 5d
with my second son he came early I wasn't dilated at all and he came early at 34w because my water broke
I am currently 36w and have been dilated 2cm at 80% since I was 32 weeks and I have been in and out the hospital because they have been trying to stop my labor each time but I still haven't dilated anymore I could be like this all the way to 40w but with the way I feel she will be here within the next week or so I have been having a lot of contractions and pressure and soft stool and sickness so you can be that way anywhere from hrs to weeks or months just be patient and know that your baby is easier to take care of in than out and she/he will come when they are ready! but if you want to speed up the process you can do squats and walk walk walk and than walk some more or nipple stimulation works too or simply have a lot of sex do all of them and see what happens but be safe

It is hard to say since each person is different and each pregnancy/delivery is different. I can tell you that at 30 weeks,I was not dilated, but 100% effaced and with meds did not deliver until 37 weeks with one child and with meds made it only three more days with the twins (who were born at 34 1/2 weeks and after back labor and an emergency c-section). I went to my doctor (the day before I was at 3cm dilation and by morning I was at a 10cm! Hence the emergency c-section---my doctor was floored that we even made it from his office to the hospital! To calm your fears, the emergency c-section was due to a preexisting complication with one of the twins---a vaginal death would have very likely caused the twin death. Fortunately, all went well and I even had another son four years later. Yes four healthy boys!!!
Take a deep breath, be patient. It could be tomorrow (or if this is your first), it could be several more weeks. Hang in there. Best wishes on your upcoming new addition. Whenever, he/she arrives, you will be in for the best ride of your life!

Hate to tell you, but there's really no rhyme or reason to how long it will take once you start dilating. With my first, I was 2 cm. and 80% effaced from 36 weeks to 40 weeks (my doc kept saying 'any day now.') I was induced at 40 weeks b/c I was sick and tired of waiting - and it was determined to be ok medically to induce. It STILL took 18 hours!!! I was still a 2 when I went in. With my second baby, I was 0 cm all the way till 39 weeks and when I went in for my 39 week appt, I was 6 cm!!!!!!! I went into labor that night and after only an hour, the contractions were 4 min. apart. I went in and was already 8 cm (after only an hour and a half of labor!) Anxious to see how the third one goes (Due Feb. 7) So, just sit back and enjoy these last few weeks of pregnancy (but be packed and prepared to go any time in the next 4 weeks! Good luck!!!

I won't bore you with details on my 8 deliveries but will say that my first was early, 32.5 weeks and I was dilated to 2 cm. for two weeks, flat in bed and still he was born then. If it is going to happen it will and if not you can go around like that for quite some time but pack a small bag and be ready and then just go on as usual. You want to get to full term so relax and deliveries can be long even if effaced and definitely you can take time to dilate more.
