my son will be 3 in august, he has recently been walking around the house with no shirt and keeps pulling on his nipples. he pulls them way out about an inch or so, and it seems it doesnt hurt him. i dont understand why he is doing this. he does this in front of anybody, and sometimes when he thinks no one is looking. he doesnt cry or laugh or say anything about it at all, if i ask why are you doing that he just gives me a blank stare. if i tell him to stop he keeps doing it, also with a blank stare. its really starting to creep me out. im embarrassed to take him to the doctor, and he doesnt have any other symptoms of anything else. hope somebody can give me some sort of idea of whats going on with him.

What can I do next?

I say it is normal. My 5 yr old still does this from time to time, although now it is only when his shirt is off. He used to do it often, regardless of who was in the room and what he was wearing. He gets sensory input from it--cause & effect: if I pull this, I will feel that... Eventually he'll stop doing it.

No worries, Mama, and no need to be embarrassed of ANYTHING when you go to the doctor. My husband is a doctor, and believe me, there ain't NOTHING that is going to shock a pediatrician :)

He's 2. He's discovering his body. Even at that age kids can notice that touching certain places make them feel funny or different.
I would just get him to understand that he needs to knock it off in front of other people. I say just be lucky he's obsessed with his nipples and not his weiner!

Be happy his fascination is limited to his own nipples. This sounds totally normal.

I'd keep a shirt on him and ignore the behavior. If he keeps taking his clothes off, get him some Osh Kosh B Gosh overalls. They have short ones (like summer shorts) and you just need to criss-cross them in the back so that he cannot remove them.

If he is "prevented" from doing it (without you telling him to stop), then he will forget about it eventually.

He's doing it because he's 2 1/2, and they're there. It's fascinating at the moment. If you think this is embarassing, wait until he moves lower down on his body to something else that just happens to be there....

Entirely normal. Try to teach him that's a private area that can only be touched by his parents, his doctor and him. Teach him he can only touch those areas in private, not when around other people.

Normal and happening in my house too. My son is 3 and will talk about nipples whenever he gets a chance. Even tries to look at mine (of course, unsuccessfully!). I tell him nipples are private and saying nipple is not a bad word, but a private word. If he happens to catch his sister (who is 6) changing, he has to tell us all how he saw her nipples. Ugh. It seems to be ebbing though...

Very normal....

If it bothers you, just keep a shirt on him.

He's two and he's discovered a new body part. He probably likes the fact that he gets a reaction out of you. Just ignore it and this phase will likely pass quickly. If you say anything, I agree with the others to just tell him matter of factly it's a p****** p***. It's very normal and nothing to be embarrassed about.

Nipples are interesting to this age group. They even think the word "nipple" is hilarious. My 3 1/2 yr old is starting to outgrow it a little and I am so relieved. But it doesn't stop her from talking about them. She just has switched from thinking they are hilarious to being rather matter of fact about them. Just today she informed me that she plans to grow her nipples bigger when she grows up. I just said, "Hmm."
