22 Weeks Pregnant and Getting a Cold, Help!

I know I can't take too much since I am 22 + weeks pregnant. Just wondering what anyone else took. A home remedy that is safe maybe? I have a scratchy throat and my sinuses are getting stuffy. I was sick before with my last child. But I had horrible colds on and off through my entire pregnancy. The doctor ended up at the end giving me a z pack to knock it out of me finally. Just was trying to catch this one before it gets to bad.

What can I do next?

Hi L..

I;m 6 months pregnant and have had a few colds this winter. Hot tea has helped me. I have gotten the traditional medicianals from whole foods. Good luck and feel better soon!

Only read a few posts so I don't know if it was mentioned but in addition to the humidifer and saline drops, drink lots of water. It really does help thin things out so it moves out of your system. Of course extra oj helps too. And someone once told me to blow your nose as often as you can. While your body will always produce, getting rid of it helps move things along faster.

Not sure if there is any truth to that or not, but can't hurt.

Congrats on the pregnancy!

My doctor told me that I could take Tylenol Cold if needed. But check with your doctor first. You know how one may say one thing but another may have a good reason against it. It's all a matter of opinion, I guess. Congrats on #2! I'm 22 weeks along, too! How come I don't get to have this kid out until May 5th? Lucky!

Hi L.! Congratulations on baby #2 ... I'm actually due with baby #2 April 12th, 2009!! Luckily I managed to stay healthy with my first pregnancy but unfortunately came down with a nasty cold a few weeks ago. My doctor gave me a list of meds that were safe to take during pregnancy. I'd definately call your OB and see what s/he recommends as each doctor is different.

I didn't take anything with my 1st 2 pregnancies, but with this one I had a horrible cold where I couldn't breathe at all. I asked my Dr. and they said regular suddafed was perfectly safe to take. I did take it twice in a weekend, but found it only helped a little so I stopped taking it.
The other thing that helped a little was using nasal spray that was saline solution. I don't have any other advice...sorry and feel better soon!

Check with your OB but I think ZICAM is holistic... it's a mega-dose of zinc that helps you kick a cold in just a few days! I LOVE IT. I used it while breastfeeding and still use it instead of over the counter meds. You still have at least one horrible-feeling day but it goes away quickly!

I was sick 3 times during my only pregnancy. The doc said I could take sudafed and suggested nasal strips for the breathing. Truthfully, the nasal strips were 10x more helpful than the Sudafed.

i saw my chiropractor after getting a z-pack from my GP. The chiropractor said that my symptoms were more virus related and not bacterial and said that anitbiotics don't realyy help with a viral illness. I went and looked up what he said at the Mayo clinic website and they said to not take anti-biotics for colds because they are not effective and rid the good bacteria out of your body. Anyway the dChiro did an endo-nasal release which drained my ears immediately (they felt stuffy), then a sinus release and cranial release massage technique that got rid of my head cold. He also did some acupressure and acupuncture and advised me to drink more water and perhaps take goldenseal to prevent future colds. I felt better sooner and didn't have to worry about hurting my baby

If it's bacterial a z-pack will work wonders. Otherwise, I lived and died by my neti pot when I was pregnant last winter. Use it twice a day and it helps tremendously. You can get them at Walgreens these days.

Sudafed, breathe right strips, humidifier in your room, saline rinse for your sinuses (also called neti pot or nasal irrigation....this is the best...it only lasts 3-4 hours but helps sooooo much and is completely safe)...oh and tylenol for any aches or pains.

Google "nasal irrigation." I don't like the head tilting with a regular neti pot (bothers my ears), but they sell a water injector thing that's similar at Walgreens that worked pretty well when I was pregnant. Hope you feel better soon.
