20 Month Old Can Unlatch Her Car Seat

My daughter is almost 21 months old and can unlatch her car seat! We have 4 different car seats, and she can unlatch all of them! The good thing is, she doesn't get out of the seat, she just unlatches it - and I can catch her pretty quick, pull over and re-latch it. But it's really getting to be a pain having to stop 2 and 3 times to do this. I'm looking for any suggestions at this point - I hate to go out and buy another car seat, since we have 4, but if that's what it takes, I'll do it!

What can I do next?

My son did the same thing at that age. He only did it once, though. I pulled over immediately, spanked him (I felt it was justified considering how dangerous it was), and told him quite forcefully that what he just did was very dangerous and that he was never to do it again. When he saw how upset I was, he decided not to try it again.

Another thing you can do, is allow her to unlatch it herself when you are ready to get out of the car. Just make sure that she knows she has to get the signal from you first or she will have to face some negative consequence (decide what that is and be consistent). This might fulfill her need to perform her new skill in a way that is safe and mom-approved.

Hi D.
Have you tried telling her "NO"? Bestrick but not mean and see where that gets you. When she doesn't listen and does it anyway explain to her why it is important to stay buckled. Even a light slap to the hands might help. She probably thinks this is a game and as long as mommy is playing there is nothing wrong.
Good Luck

Hi D., I had this problem with two of my three kids, I also had the problem with my children unbuckling the seat belt that attaches the carseat to the seat. I would never know when they would reach around to unbuckle it and if we had ever gotten in an accident then my child would go threw the window while still strapted in the carseat.. So I invented a secure strap so they have no way of unbuckleing the seat belt. It has worked great I just never spent the time to sell them, I really wasnt sure if anyone else had this same problem with their children but I am going to make some and sell them on creigslist. I think it would save childrens lives. so let me know if you are intrested in seeing a picture. Good Luck R A
( sorry not a great speller)

We have the COSCO Alpha Omega Carseat and my four year old can only unlatch the top part that goes over his chest. He has tried to push the button on the other part, but it is at the wrong angle for him to do it himself. We have two different styles of this carseat and the newer of the two is the one we use for him. It has a push button directly on the front.

My son is very technical and I am surprised that he can not undo it and very thankful! He can unlock anything, even doors in the house from the opposite side ie. using something sharp or pointy through the hole. I don't know if this helped, but so far so good with this carseat!
