Hey ladies, I need some advice on how to help my little boy with this terrible cough he has. I've talked to the pediatrician's office, and they told me all the "use a humidifier, elevate the head of the bed, hot steam from the shower". I was wondering if any of you had anything else to recommend. It is a shame all of the over the counter cold medicines are for over 2yrs. My child is miserable and can't sleep. Any advice would be helpful.

What can I do next?

Hello Shelia,

Essential oils can help. on a tissue put
4 drops peppermint oil
1 drop rosemare oil
1 drop basil oil

put that tissue in the room (where he canNOT get to it)
it will help with the cough.

NOTE: --DO NOT put the oil directly on your baby's skin--

I don't know if anyone has mention this yet:
at bed time put vicks vapor rub on his feet (put socks on afterwards)
Good luck! ~C.~

I am unsure of the type of cough but if you are trying to get him, and you, some rest from the coughing try honey. 1 Tbsp. of honey and it will help suppress the cough-sounds weird but has worked in our house. HTH

I am interested in as to what kind of cough it is? If it is a dry cough, a wet cough, or does it sound like a whooping cough. A whooping cough sort of sounds like a whining dog .
He may have allergies, which always entails a cough or runny nose. My daughter is 18mths old and takes 3/4 tsp of Zyrtec grape syrup per day. Of course, you would want to get the advice of the doctor, before trying this.

I'm not sure if you took your son to the doctor or just called them, but my 15 month old had a pretty bad cough recently and I finally decided to take him in and he ended up diagnosed with a sinus and ear infection. So, maybe you should just make him an appointment, if you haven't seen the doctor yet.

Shelia,
It's been 15 years, but the treatment for croup or wet cough was the same as what your doc told you. I had to stay up all night with my son, I ran the shower till the hot water ran out and I held him near to it, with all the bathroom doors closed so the room got really steamy. Use the smallest bathroom you have. That worked really well for me. Afterwards, I put him in his bouncy chair so I could sleep for a few minutes before we had to go back to the steam in the bathroom. Good luck!

If your son's cough is getting worse or is not improving or he is running any fever or has a green snot nose... then immediately take him to the doctor. Do not allow them to diagnose and treat over the phone unless it is something you have dealt with before.

This is the season for RSV, yes, even older babies can get sick with it. Croup, respiratory infections... not to mention the coughing can irritate the airways and cause inflammation which can then restrict the airways.

Hope he is feeling better very soon... and if not take him to the doctor. If they don't like that, then find a new doctor.

We use Vicks on the feet with socks on for our kids when they are stuffy or have a cough. It has worked wonders for us. We buy Baby Vicks, a small amount rubbed on the sole of their feet, then some socks.

Good luck!

I don't know of anything else other than what the Dr. told you but if it makes you feel better my son is 2.5 and has a horrible cough too right now. Something must be going around or it's the weather change.
